The Poor, The Pre-Schoolers, and The Pope
With the Cross of Jesus, Marching on Before. -Onward Christian Soldiers, A Hymn
They figured out how to do it compassionately and that comes as a great relief to the poor being served by Catholic Charities of Washington D.C.
In December 2009, the D.C. Council voted 11-2 in favor of a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. The District of Columbia requires that married same-sex couples receive the same employment benefits as are given heterosexual couples by their employers. Catholic Charities said that would force it to recognize same-sex marriage, a violation of church dogma. It said with the passage of the ordinance it would have to reconsider its role in the District. That threatened to severely impact the underprivileged since, according to Catholic on Line, Catholic Charities "serves 68,000 people . . . through a range of services, including shelter, nutrition, counseling, employment and job training services, legal and health care assistance, immigration assistance and more." Catholic Charities has now responded and its response was not as draconian as it had suggested it might be. Although it gave up its foster care program because of the possibility children would end up in the homes of gay couples who were legally married, it has not abandoned all the other good things it does nor taken out its disapproval of the new ordinance on the poor and the destitute. Instead it has taken it out on new employees.
On March 1 all Catholic Charities employees received a message telling them that health care benefits that had theretofore been give all employees and their spouses would not be given for new hires after March 1. Although partners of new employees will not receive benefits, there's a bright side to the picture. While gay and heterosexual couples employed by the Church are struggling to pay for health insurance for their partners, the Church will continue to help the poor.
Meanwhile, half a continent away, the Church was demonstrating that the East coast did not have a monopoly on sacrificing good works on dogma's altar. Its messenger was Charley Chaput. Charley is the Archbishop of Denver and can be recognized by the pointy hat he wears and the crazy things he says. During the 2004 election year he said that anyone who voted for John Kerry had committed a sin that had to be confessed before the voter/supplicant would be permitted to receive communion. Charley has now come up with a new proscription that falls within the category of visiting the sins of the fathers/mothers on their children. It deals with families where there are two fathers or two mothers.
The Preschool run by the Sacred Heart of Jesus church in Boulder, Colorado, has notified staff that one of the students currently enrolled at the school will not be returning in the fall since the child's parents are a same-sex lesbian couple. As Charley's spokesperson explains: "Homosexual couples living together as a couple are expected to follow the Catholic Church's beliefs." The statement goes on to say: "No person shall be admitted as a student in any Catholic school unless that person and his/her parent(s) subscribe to the school's philosophy and agree to abide by the educational policies and regulations of the school and Archdiocese."
It seems obvious that at this point the school is going to have to send out a questionnaire to all parents since same-sex marriages are probably not the only proscriptions of the faith indulged in by parents of preschoolers. Votes for president in 2004 should be checked into. It makes little sense to say that a parent who voted for John Kerry cannot take communion but can send a child to Sacred Heart of Jesus preschool.
The questionnaire should inquire into the sexual practices of heterosexual parents. Some parents may view sex as having purposes beyond procreation and may even find those purposes amusing in a way that would greatly offend Charley. In furtherance of such practices it is possible they may take advantage of the marketplace's offerings to insure that no children are conceived as a result of those activities. It is not enough for Charley to decree such conduct to be reprehensible in its own right and to promise its practitioners untoward consequences in the hereafter. There must also be immediate consequences. Burning at the stake is not an option but expulsion from preschool of the children of the sexually frivolous is. And, of course, the questionnaire should be sent not only to parents of preschoolers but to parents of all students. The results will probably enhance the quality of education afforded by Sacred Heart of Jesus school since it will almost certainly result in smaller class sizes, a clear benefit for the students permitted to remain enrolled following tabulation of the results of the questionnaire.Comments

Show AllArchbishop Charley Chaput probably has a pointy head to fit under the hat. Organized religion, even of the Christian variety, does not have to be intolerant -- look to the Quakers or Unitarians -- but too often it is.
Good works should be practiced WITHOUT inquiring into sexual orientation. The biological probably is that gays were among the crowd for the Sermon on the Mound, and Jesus did not kick them out, instead He saved them.
Too bad the Church worships the half-crazed St. Paul over the great teacher Yeshua Yosef (AKA Christ). It would be a far better institution.

The latest scandal is that the pope's brother abused choir boys in germany and finally.....the pope himself is being investigated. Yes indeed.
Coverups in Germany when he was archbishop there and his letter of 2001 to all bishops to keep quiet about child abuse. He was cardinal ratzinger then. The pope's right hand man.
The vatican lawyers are out in force now.
Some in the know are expecting a tsunami of class action suits to spread through europe, now that many who were abused in Germany and Holland have come forward.
It only took two thousand years. But, in the universal scheme of things. That is a flash in time.

I agree -- the scandals are going to roll out, one after another!
Years ago, I remember seeing a documentary about Martin Luther, who had serious issues with the Catholic Church and the Pope -- one being, the sale of Indulgences. When the Pope invited him to Rome, Martin Luther thought they would have serious discussions on the issues. However, when he arrived in Rome, the Pope didn't have time to see him. One evening, there was a celebration, and an enormous cake was rolled out for the Pope and naked boys jumped out of the cake. Needless to say, Martin Luther did NOT approve. That was just before Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses at Wittenberg on October 31, 1517. (I grew up attending the Lutheran Church, which I haven't attended for years and years!)
You are so correct -- this has been going on for centuries, mostly unchecked!
I still remember watching that documentary, and being shocked, but not really shocked. Already, here in the U.S. stories from those who had been sexually abused by priests were coming to light.
Well.......everytime i think i can't be even more nauseated. They invented sado masochism as far as i am concerened. Or at least institutionalized it.
Yes, it will self destruct from its own inner rot and sickness and destructiveness.
And i am so pleased to have the chance to witness this empire of the soul collapse.
(well, that sounded quite.....)
The Catholic Church will stand by the teachings of the Gospels as she has done since her founding by Jesus Christ. We will not bend to to current secular views of sexuality and modernism. Bishop Chaput is leading his flock as he is directed by his ordination to the magisterium. Our Pope, the direct inheritor of authority from St. Peter through Christ, continues to speak out boldly for morality and rightiousness. Our martyrs die quietly, not in explosive violence or at the cost of innocent life, but rather in Christ's lasting and promised gift of....

oh, dear. ...
Indeed, Cee,
I guess it's what I deserve for forsaking the prayer that begs the hypothetical Creator of the Universe to "lead us not into temptation", because I'm always powerfully tempted to tee off on such supercilious and sanctimonious piety.
I've had comments removed for apparently being unacceptably disrespectful to this kind of sententious comment, even when I've tried to confine my hostility to snark and sarcasm.
Here, less is more.
So I'll leave it at: Amen! ;)
Yes, the teachings of the Gospels that teach Catholics to rape children.
Your beloved pope, continues to cover up Catholics raping children. In America. In Ireland. In the Netherlands. In GERMANY. In your beloved Pope's very own former diocese. The innocent children raped by Catholics are the one who have suffered a lifetime of explosive violence.
Child rapist.
Don't forget, the Pope is a former "Hitler Youth." Raping children goes with the territory.
Couldn't have posted it better myself. Brauschli is the consummate Catholic hater who thinks his Harvard teaching position makes him intelligent. Why CD keeps including his rants on their website escapes me.
What did anyone expect of a male-supremacist church?
Beyond organized patriarchal religion's war on women, it is obvious that women stand in the way of sexual abuse of children!
Women are the natural protectors of children -- oppress and depower them and let the perversion begin.
It is no coincidence that with the rise of the right, we have a rise in violence of every kind -- and increasing numbers of women and children forced into sexual slavery all over the world.
Patriarchy and violence are mirror images of one another.
The lies, deceit, violence, distortions of spirituality -- and it's perversion of normal human sexuality -- makes clear
that this is a Vatican of, by and for males and that has
been so for thousands of years.
These sexual perversions are nothing new within the Church.
Remember that they were also inflicted upon the Native American by Papal Bulls - and upon the African enslaved
on this continent. Catholic government schools while
intended to destroy Native American culture, dignity and
pride -- did so with torture, beatings, rapes, sexual
perversions of every kind - hangings, kidnappings.
The hardest thing to understand is the ignorance of those
who support these male-supremacist religions.
WHY should we consider it any benefit that the Catholic Church is still
involved in any way with even providing "charity" for the public?
Anything to do with families will bring them into contact with children.
And, they pervert health care for females!
PLUS, we are paying $500 million and more/???? to organized patriarchal
religion for their "faith-based" organizations!!
"According to all myth, the female - not the male -- gives life"
The Church hates women? Is that why we revere Blessed Virgin Mary? Is that why nuns join the convents, because they know the Church hates women?
Keep on with your erroneous smears, Concience, and stay where you are spiritually. We stand with the true Church and her teachings which are far better than what the free love society is bringing forth these days.
