Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize: OK, He’s A Nice Guy, But …
Is it really appropriate for the Nobel Peace Prize to be given to a man who would rather look forward than backwards when it comes to decisions, taken at the highest levels of the previous administration, to turn America from a country that upheld the universal torture ban into a country that sought to redefine torture so that it could torture “high-value detainees” in a network of secret prisons around the world?
Is it really appropriate for the Nobel Peace Prize to be given to a man who, although he ordered the closure of Guantánamo and recognizes that it “set back the moral authority” that, in his opinion, “is America’s strongest currency in the world,” and also that it “became a symbol that helped al-Qaeda recruit terrorists to its cause,” endorses indefinite detention without charge or trial for some of the 221 prisoners still held in the prison?
Is it really appropriate for the Nobel Peace Prize to be given to a man who, through the Justice Department, is appealing a ruling extending the habeas corpus rights granted by the Supreme Court to the prisoners at Guantánamo to foreign prisoners seized in other countries and “rendered” to the US prison at Bagram airbase — where some of these men have been held for six years — even though the judge ruled that “the detainees themselves as well as the rationale for detention are essentially the same”?
Is it really appropriate to give the Nobel Peace Prize to a man who, although he revoked some of the Bush administration’s vilest executive orders and swore to uphold the universal torture ban, appears to be actively involved in the rendition of prisoners to the US prison at Bagram airbase?
Is it really appropriate for the Nobel Peace Prize to be given to a man who, although professing his admiration for the Geneva Conventions, has chosen to introduce Guantánamo-style reviews for the 600 or so Afghan prisoners held at Bagram, rather than the competent tribunals stipulated in Article 5 of the Geneva Conventions, and who, as a result, appears to be endorsing the Bush administration’s unilateral rewriting of the Conventions?
In conclusion, although I realize that less deserving men have been given the Nobel Peace Prize in previous years — Henry Kissinger, anyone? — and although I reiterate that Barack Obama seems to be a nice guy, and that his election victory last November lifted a cloud of tyranny from the United States, I also have to note another ironic subtext to the award: that it will, sadly, serve only to inflame the rabid wing of the Republican party, which is predisposed to believe a Democratic President is soft on national security issues, and who would only have respect for the Nobel Committee if it introduced a Nobel War Prize and handed it to Dick Cheney.

Show Allright on! this is not for the last six months. this is a prize to prod him to do good deeds. he is the most powerful man on earth. this is about helping him not to forget that the next 8 years could truly change the world.
from day one, rahm, summers, and hillary have been force-feeding obama that supporting thugs, thieves, usurers, and usurpers --both domestic and foreign-- is the only way, as well as reminding him relentlessly that the "contributions" of such people mean death or life for any presidency.
the rest of the world --us-- we have only our fading voices. the nobel committee has seen that and decided to add its little, highly symbolic prodding. let's raise our voices to denounce and harass obama's team of venal sell-outs and satraps and let's prod obama and the few decent democrats with power to side more and more with the non-predatory common people of the usa and of the world.

Thank you Common Dreams and Andy Worthington:
It seems the majority of factual articles hail from the UK.
Except for:
"that Barack Obama seems to be a nice guy, and that his election victory last November lifted a cloud of tyranny from the United States."
SORRY, ANDY, OBAMA HAS PROVEN TO BE NOT A NICE GUY. HIS "VICTORY" HAS NOT "LIFTED A CLOUD OF TYRANNY" EITHER.
But, as you point out, Obama has continued and heightened U.S. torture at Guantanamo and elsewhere.
This is a sad day for the world.
Awarding the Nobel "Peace" Prize to Obama is an opportunistic ploy by the Nobel Committee and is a strategic move to "calm the masses".
This news brought tears to my eyes.
Tears for the people in Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries where we continue to cause suffering and death.
I don't know whether to hide in the closet or scream from the rooftops that "I am mad as hell".
Well put, sue1403. Here is something positive you can do. Join the international movement for free public transit. http://freepublictransit.org

Barack Obama's election last November "lifted a cloud of tyranny from the United States" ?
I have to disagree.
Don't you mean to say that we were all lifted above the cloud of tyranny to this new, Heavenly state of enlightenment, wherein we are all angels made of silken moonbeams and never-ending tenderness, with nothing other than compassion in our hearts and the light of Justice for All, regardless of geographic location, in our eyes, and with the inescapable, unrelenting, voice of truth and understanding flowing from our mouths as sunlight upon the deepest oceans?
Otherwise, a good article.
Oh, I don't know... In a country where racism still runs rampant, he managed to bring enough voters together to elect him as Amerikkka's first African American president...I'd say it's appropriate. Not even one year into his first term, to rag on him for not yet fixing every single problem caused by Bush's previous eight years in office? No...that's not appropriate.
Wake up, Elizabeth! How about we rag on him for rescuing wall st., taking single-payer out of the options, providing more dough for the TWO illegal invasions (With a possible third in the wings), bringing on many of Bush's war-mongers to his staff, and on and on and....
Gee...why don't we address this after his first year is over? And remember, he's not a king. He has to deal with a congressional body, a pentagon, a right leaning supreme court, a history of corporate hegemony... Try to look further than the end of your nose.
You apologists all live in the same dream world! In case you missed it, the so called "congressional body" you point to is controlled by the Democrats. What exactly don't you understand about that?
It's not about gop vs. dems. What exactly don't YOU understand about that? I have better things to do than to argue about this ad nauseum. Later.
Dont let the door bang your brain on the way out.
edit
"And remember, he's not a king."

Don't tell US-- tell HIM! He's been "Unitary Executive" all the way ever since he saw that throne in the Oval Office!
By the way, I don't begrudge you your opinions, but don't flatter yourself that you obviously possess greater insight and understanding of the machinations of politics.
Perhaps you'll someday be shocked to learn that most of what you thought you saw "past your nose" turned out to be inside your head.
I'm pleased that you have better things to do than argue with fools and idiots-- me, too! But I thought I'd leave this response just in case.
· Yr Obd't Servant
Yep.
But Lizzie dear, the vast majority of his moves, both in cabinet appointments and policy are not in the right DIRECTION. In other words he's cementing the status quo in place in some respects and escalating it in others. For a president who promised change, he is not living up to it in the least. Obama is all about smoke and mirrors, and this will become evident to even the most ardent of his supporters in short order.
You know what they say: "If it walks like a duck..."
Yep!
I'm fed up with Democrat apologists. We give a guy a mandate for change, the first thing he says is he wants to pursue continuity, and almost a year later many folks still think he's "trying." What could Obama possibly do in the next three months to make his first year a success? And what do you people need to have happen to see that the American republic has been replaced by the American empire, an empire that is rapidly drawing to an ugly conclusion? Elections are nothing more than our chance to ratify the military-industrial complex's selections for Emperor-for-Four/Eight-Years.
If we learned anything in the last eight years, it is that the President is a pretty powerful guy and can get what he wants done when he wants to do it. But I guess that only applies to regressive presidents and regressive policies. When we elect a president to change directions (i.e., move leftward, when even a "centrist" would have to do in a country that has gone so far to the right), and he does nothing of the sort, why do we give him a pass? As others have noted, HIS party is in charge in the Congress, so the excuse that he "has to deal with a congressional body" is a fail. He also doesn't have to "deal" with the Pentagon. He is the COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF of the armed forces, for Christ's sake. Unless the Pentagon really runs the show (ding ding ding! you win the prize!), this is another fail. We have a right-leaning supreme court thanks in large part to the same Democrats who are now doing nothing to move the country leftward, and to blame corporate hegemony, while our President is obviously a corporate shill, fails yet again.
So who is it really who needs to look further than the end of her nose?
Right. Let's wait before we address it, Elizabeth.
Because it's perfectly acceptable that Obama has heightened offshore torture, bombed Afhanistan, gifted and rewarded banks for stealing, unleashed latest torture crowd-control methods on G20 protesters, the list goes on.
It makes perfect sense that we should award him with the Nobel Peace Prize AND our complicity in the killing of innocent people.
Are you aware, Elizabeth, that the role of the President is as public servant doing the work of the people?
Well, Elizabeth, I'm mad as hell, as every decent, thinking person should be.
The award goes to the voters who elected him then, not to the one who betrayed the voters, but exploited their votes.
And enough with the poor Obama has to fix Bush disaster talking points. This article itemizes just a short list of examples where Obama is continuing, if not accelerating and certainly not FIXING any of Bush policies yet you completely ignored that and reverted to your excuses. Hopeless.
"Hopeless."
Indeed. You know it is a dark day for your country when bankruptcy appears to be the only thing that can stop us from destroying ourselves and the rest of the planet.
Considering that they blackmailed or at the very least Bush Hog-tied him into his present positions, I think it only fair as an act of conservative compassion, that Obomba share this DYNOMITE award with W and Tricky Dick, Two!
In an insane world, what can you expect? I'm ready for Germ X to come and take us all out and let the Earth start all over again. I just can NOT get my mind wrapped around this farce!!!
Obama is taking us into Vietnam part II in Afghanistan and gets the prize for Peace. What fantasy world do these people live in? Futhermore, how many non combatants have been slaughtered thanks to drone strikes.
Fantasy has become the new reality.
sue1403 - I'm starting to look for your comments as I do RichM's. Both cutting through the BS in concise, articulate fashion.
How can anyone call Obama a nice guy when his actions make him & his regime just as evil as the previous one.
I, of course, will once again vote 3rd party as I did in 2008. If only all so called liberal/progressives would forget going for the lesser of two evils & vote against the one party system posing as two.
Thanks, barry.
Who is running 3rd party? Nader concerns me, where is he? The thing I like about Dennis Kucinich is that he's been consistent in his votes, he lives his life modestly. He has a feistiness that makes him a force to be reckoned with. His contributions are mainly from individuals. He does have a strong following. If he and Nader, Cindy, etc. could get together somehow... I've definitely had it with the "democrat" party. The "party", not Dennis.
The award is to incentivize him into actually doing something for the cause of peace.
that's what I also thought partially.
"HERE's YOUR peace nobel award...now go and ACT accordingly"
lol.
Doesn't one normally get an incentive by performing the desired action instead of thwarting it?
Isn't this more like "Good boy; you go sic them brown people. Don't forget us in a couple decades when you're doling out those, um, last hydrocarbons"?
Would we could put 0 in a cell next to Kissinger.
I reel with contempt -- for what-all that's worth.
Think of the "Nobel Peace Prize" being given to Obama as a "Scooby Snack". Remember Scooby Doo? The team would ask him if he'd do his job for a scooby snack. He says "uh huh", eats his scooby snacks, and Scooby goes wild. But let's get back to the real world. Obama will simply fake peace and he's not politically dumb but a political crook with his "Nobel Peace Prize". It sucks but just like economic matters, foreign policy matters are treated like cartoons !
And I think that Obama will be seen as the Affirmative Action presidency--proving that he achieves based on something other than performance or competence and that will only fuel resent and reinforce views that Obama didn't really earn anything and that he is underqualified and not up to the task but awarded nonetheless.
Yeah, TARP is another great example of the type of Affirmative Action to which Obama pays homage: no CEO left behind.
are you saying the voters decided to elect him prez to fill a quota?
Man, is there an echo in here?
No, but I think when the presently lobotomized Michelle Obama observed that she had good reason to be proud, she referred to the US electorate's willingness to elect a person of color.
The point I was making, and I know it is a sensitive one, is that could appear to some that Obama doesn't have to have the credentials or the record in order to win the recognition.
" Barack Obama seems to be a nice guy and his election victory last November lifted a cloud of tyranny from the United States ". Andy you are being conned! All good con men seem like nice guys; otherwise, they would be poor con men! PLease explain to me what you mean: Obama lifted a cloud of tyranny from the U.S???
Republican = tyrant (rightly so)
Democrat = not tyrant (erroneously)
Explained!
Excellent point, paul revere.
Obama is a con man and a very good one. It amazes me that people still think he is a nice guy. I'll bet Oprah and Bruce still think so. They let Obama woo them and he's probably saying "now hold on, give me time".
And yes, Andy, how has he lifted a cloud of tyranny? Obama actions have proven he's a tyrant and a bully. How is he any different than Bush?
"How is he any different than Bush." Sue1403, from my perspective, they are both part of same the crime family, only one is the family idiot and the other is the family con man and that is about it!
Imagine a school science fair where the principal hands a student first prize prior to the competition and says, "I'm sure your project will be spectacular because you are so popular in school."
Then the student unveils his electricity-producing potato.
I will never see the Nobel Peace Prize in the same light again!
What a farce!
Two words:
Henry Kissinger.
I think the words "Nobel Peace Prize" mystify the award a bit. It is an award given out by 5 committee members selected by the Norwegian Parliament. That is all it is. When the U.S. government chooses to honor someone, or dishonor them, we rightly ignore it.
I do think that it is ultimately appropriate that Obama has won an award given to Theodore Roosevelt, who never saw a war he didn't like.
True but Teddy was better on the environment and he broke up those monopolies..so far Obama claims battles already won as bold symbols of change-cigarette advertising targeting children (as approved by big tobacco) and rights for the disabled complete with a honorary statue of Helen Keller (of course representing her as a child ala Patty Duke--not the socialist activist she became).
" serve only to inflame the rabid wing of the Republican party, which is predisposed to believe a Democratic President is soft on national security issues, and who would only have respect for the Nobel Committee if it introduced a Nobel War Prize and handed it to Dick Cheney."
I doubt if anyone will ever have respect for the Nobel committee again.
Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize despite letting Afghanistan get turned into a war zone since 1979. Nobel is about as screwed up as has been. I'll bet the Republicans will use this as an excuse to reward Sarah Palin next year or possibly Arnold Schwarzenegger ! I feel very strange about this "scooby snack" giveaway to Obama that I almost feel like joining the next tea bagger party if there's one in VA or in MD/DC except my wife won't let me for fear that I might get out of control.
Don't join the T-Baggers yet! This may alert people top how shallow this stuff is and how little Obama has done right. He can certainly spend money....maybe he shopuld have gotten the Spendthrift award?
Don't worry. I won't bother joining the t-baggers. I just got so carried away feeling more pissed off. My wife would put me through a living hell if I even tried.
As it is, I'm already getting more pissed off at those stupid advertisements being shoved in my mailbox and front door knob about Bob Mcdonnell being against women. I'm not a misogynist but I wish the Democrats would get past that tell us what they have in mind to fix things for all Virginians. But thanks to Obama getting spoiled, I'm afraid this party will be pulling more Sein-Feldian do-nothings.
Obama spend money? What money? Money we're borrowing from China? I need me a third bottle of beer today. Oh wait, I don't wanna get caught driving drunk tonight ! Gaaaa !
Come to think of it, I suppose Shaggy and Scooby Doo might as well be occupying the White House by now.
"Come to think of it, I suppose Shaggy and Scooby Doo might as well be occupying the White House by now."
Now you are talking upgrades!
OMG ! You two are so funny mentioning the idea of Shaggy and Scooby in the White House I can barely control my laughter. Thanks for the laughs. :)
