ACORN Moves Forward
San Francisco resident Vicente Obico, age 67, volunteers weekly at his local church food bank, helping deliver groceries to seniors in his neighborhood. For years, Obico and his wife paid their mortgage every month, but because they were a victim of a predatory loan, they began to fall behind and his bank would not communicate with them to modify the loan.
ACORN members helped, and were successful in renegotiating the loan and keeping Obico and his wife in their home. If it weren't for ACORN's ability to help draw public attention to their situation, they would have lost their home, and his local church, which relies heavily on volunteers to continue their community services to seniors, would have lost one of their most dedicated church members.
Akiko Rodriques, a single mom with four children, ages 3 to 14, had her first experience with ACORN's free tax preparation service this year. When she left, she was delighted by the amount of her tax refund. She used the money to pay off her bills and had a little extra left. She took her kids on a family summer vacation to Disneyland - their first trip to Southern California - and used some of the money for a graduation gift for her oldest daughter. Akiko is hoping to have her taxes filed by ACORN again next tax season.
Obico and Rodriques are two of many examples of the work ACORN has done in communities throughout the Bay Area for more than 20 years, helping tens of thousands of residents in much the same manner to have affordable housing, get out of poverty and build stronger community.
Two weeks ago, videos surfaced of several ACORN employees providing outrageous advice to two people who had walked into their offices (self-described "conservative activists" acting undercover who had done similar biased and agenda-driven videos of other organizations) seeking help. The ACORN employees have either been fired or suspended, and we are investigating why they behaved this way.
Our top priority is to complete an audit of our programs and services. An independent team of experts is reviewing the administration of these services. They will return with a top-to-bottom analysis of what we're doing well, and what needs improvement and all of our many offices will adopt policies, procedures and reforms that come out of this process.
Our goal is to make sure our services are effective to save homes and guarantee vital services.
The advocacy of ACORN, and of ACORN members like Obico, has helped families get through these tough economic times. Our work has also resulted in numerous policy changes, such as state legislation banning some of the most egregious predatory lending practices, greater accountability of liquor stores violating the law and increasing the minimum wage.
As we look inward to clean up what's not working within our organization, we also put out a call to selfless volunteers eager to help their neighbors. Without ACORN, this work would be left undone, and hardworking families would be left to fend for themselves.

Show AllI think how that video was made should be investigated before any action is taken...clever editing, voice over, etc could have been used to make it look worse than it is.

ACORN retrenching may well be a blessing in disguise.
This ACORN story means absolutely nothing to anyone. It is not important in the grand scheme of things. It is simply entertainment to fuel bigoted minds and fill up Faux News airtime with hateful drivel.
so the Democrats that voted to defund ACORN are "bigoted and hateful" or did the GOP make them do it?
Some of them of course...
My point was this is another media generated controversy and both parties took the bait.
ACORN does good work in many places. Unfortunately, their individual and organizational enthusiasm and the racial- and union-inspired "us-against-the-man" attitude overwhelms their common sense too often. The allegations of voter-registration fraud spring from this as do the "pimp videos" and the recent trespassing into foreclosed properties.
One liberal commentator who worked with ACORN on political campaigns, said last night, "ACORN couldn't organize a two-car funeral." Overall, I think this is probably true.
The call here is for greater organizational competence and oversight. ACORN should welcome this boot in the butt, cut out the more political efforts and concentrate on helping and supporting the communities.

Are you sure about that...can acorn's help for the poor communities outstrip Washington's ability to empoverish them? If such groups vacate the political arena aren't you leaving the decisions in the hands of the rich lobbyists (Halliburton and friends don't forsake politics when they get caught screwing up, they send MORE lobbyists to the capitol). Maybe the best way to help the poor is to concentrate more on politics, while maintaining their community efforts. Can acorn walk and chew gum at the same time?
"Can acorn walk and chew gum at the same time?"
Obviously, they have trouble in that regard. As for ACORN's funding, don't forget the Golden Rule -- He who provides the gold, makes the rules. If ACORN continues to suck at the government teat, then ACORN is little more than an arm of that same corrupt government, driven by the wealthiest lobbyists; as you pointed out so well.
My brother worked for ACORN which was assisting with union organizing drives. He had nothing good to say about them. It was a harsh, heirarchial, top down organization headed by Wade Rathke - a typical corrupt poverty-pimp. Anyone who has worked or even just lived in a poor neighborhood knows what a "poverty pimnp" is - an agency that existed largely to use the poor to collect foundation, government and individual donor grants for the purpose of funneling them to the high salaries at the top.
Last year, Rathke was finally forced to resign after being connected to his brother's embezzlement of nearly $1 million in ACORN funds.
In the voter registration drives, the poor workers at most ACORN offices were put under constant pressure to meet voter registration quotas or get fired. This is a formula for exactly the kind of faked registration card problems that occurred.
For young volunteers, ACORN is the graveyard of their idealism and enthusiasm.
His opinion is that ACORN should simply be allowed to die. There are many, real, un-corrupt, community activism groups that can take it's place.

If what you say is true around the country, then ACORN is worse than those who do nothing. To take advantage of the poor is despicable. Simply allowing them to die is like letting a rattlesnake in the nursery die of old age. It should be shot immediately.
Do others have experiences like this to share?
When I heard about this, the first thought was Bad Management. You have certainly fleshed out some details. If an organization can't monitor activities of local operatives, it is too big.
This sounds like a great and compassionate organization that understands what it means and how necessary it is to help others. My advice to ACORN is to expose those who are discrediting them for being a force for good.
Well, yeah. But not a single Wall Street bankster has ever offered tax advice to a prostitute. They may have taken a trillion dollars from the rest of us, but, ya know, we have our limits! Number of poor-people counciling and helping organizations 'found out' by Glen Beck and company? ONE! Number of Wall Street banksters or Bernie Madoff shysters revealled as they bankrupt not just the American economy but the global economy, 'found out' by Glen Beck and company? ZERO! Clearly: Beck and company also have their priorities. Leap over the Republicans engaged in the business of bankrupting the American people and HAMMER the poverty-alleviating organization with a few bad Apples.
Now THAT'S the American Way...
Wade Rathke is a union busting fraud.
The IWW organized some ACORN workers and Rathke busted the union. It seems that ACORN will help organize any workers other than their own. Read all about the six week long strike against Acorn at:

Too bad that an organization that purports to help grass roots organizing is not more upright.. And this guy is founder of a chapter of SEIU. Poverty pimp, indeed!
APorn is a good organization that channels a lot of needed money to the inner cities. A handful of slave traffickers doesn't mean the whole organization is bad.
