The Censored Health-Care Option
President Obama said on Wednesday night:
"Now, the truth is that, unless you have a -- what's called a single-payer system, in which everybody is automatically covered, then you're probably not going to reach every single individual because there's always going to be somebody out there who thinks they're indestructible and doesn't want to get health care, doesn't bother getting health care, and then, unfortunately, when they get hit by a bus, end up in the emergency room and the rest of us have to pay for it."
Another name for "what's called a single-payer system" would be: healthcare as a human right, not a commodity to be purchased. Many humans have this right. They just aren't Americans.
Obama's mention of single-payer, in passing, as something that would be better than anything else, but something that mysteriously lies out of reach, is typical of the very few mentions of single-payer healthcare in the U.S. corporate media.
I just did some searches in the Lexis-Nexis databases of major U.S. and world publications, news wire services, and TV and radio broadcast transcripts. Searching for "healthcare" in July 2009 found over 1,000 documents, the maximum number that Lexis-Nexis will display.
In fact, searching just the past two days found over 1,000 documents. Another search confirmed that this is "Michael Jackson" level coverage.
And another search confirmed that virtually none of these documents mentioned single-payer at all, much less told anyone what it was. A search for documents later than July 1 containing single-payer OR "single payer" turned up only 197 documents.
Americans have consistently told pollsters for decades that they want single-payer. But America's government refuses to provide it, and therefore America's state media refuses to discuss it.
Of the 197 records of the media mentioning single-payer in July, almost half were congressional records or press releases or otherwise not media reports at all. Others were articles in medical trade publications.
Even so, those articles tended to mention single-payer very briefly and dismiss it -- in the unfortunate phrase used by Kaiser Health News -- as "dead on arrival." Several others were transcripts of unidentified local shows that mentioned the word in passing. Others were blurbs in local newspapers announcing events. And several were reports and columns in British and Canadian newspapers.
The Canadians, by the way, seem to be under the impression that President Obama is seeking to create single-payer healthcare. Several more documents -- by far the best and most extensive U.S. coverage of single-payer -- consisted of letters to the editor.
A Boston Globe editorial mentions single-payer in a list but says nothing about it. A four-sentence Associated Press report on an event mentions the word. A Washington Post column by Dana Milbank attempts to mock all humanity and somehow mentions single-payer in the process.
Several articles report on town hall forums at which people have asked President Obama why he doesn't support single-payer. The Washington Times complained that such questions were permitted.
The Washington Post praised Obama for appearing ready for such a question and answering it "calmly." No word on whether his answer made any sense or not.
There's a report of an event at which the Secretary of Health and Human Services opposed single-payer. There are several reports of a press conference held by the White House Press Secretary at which someone apparently shouted out "single payer" for a laugh and got it.
There are a number of reports and transcripts that attack single-payer without explaining what it is.
Most of them attack the so-called "public option" as leading to single-payer. That is to say, the media is afraid that people will overwhelmingly prefer precisely what the media opposes, and the media opposes it precisely because people would prefer it. The public option could only lead to single-payer if everyone decided they preferred it to the high costs and poor health provided by the for-profit insurers.
The reports taking this approach include a CNBC interview in which the host makes this claim; a Washington Times column by Sen. Judd Gregg, R-New Hampshire; an Associated Press story quoting Sen. Gregg; a transcript of the Ed Schultz Show on which another Republican senator made the same claim; another MSNBC transcript with Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa; a Copley News column by Phyllis Schlafly; a Fox News interview by Sean Hannity of Louisiana's Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal; a Fox News transcript with Rep. John Fleming, R-Louisiana; and a transcript of Chris Matthews interviewing Sen. Orin Hatch, R-Utah.
Other transcripts attack single-payer more directly, if no more substantively. Two of these are from Fox News. One is from CNN. Two are from Bloomberg TV.
There's a short New York Times interview of Howard Dean opposing single-payer. (Dean favors a strong public option, while arguing that single-payer would infringe on the American desire for "choice").
There's an NPR Morning Edition transcript of Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, saying he'd like single-payer but that it's "off the table."
There's an NPR "Talk of the Nation" transcript that briefly mentions single-payer. There's an NPR "Fresh Air" transcript in which Terry Gross asks a guest whether he would really prefer single-payer and the guest says "Yes, but . ..."
There's a four-sentence editorial by the Boston Globe explaining that "Harry and Louise" advertisements are false because single-payer is not under consideration. There's a Washington Times article suggesting that Obama might move away from single-payer. Never mind that Obama has not supported it for years.
There's a Toronto Star report on Wal-Mart's proposal to solve the U.S. healthcare crisis. There's a Copley News column complaining that the "Bill Moyers' Journal" on PBS has covered single-payer.
There's a Washington Post column by Harold Meyerson complaining, in passing, that citizens will not create a movement for single-payer, even though it was that movement that put single-payer on Bill Moyers's program.
There are five transcripts from the Ed Schultz Show, some of them treating single-payer honestly, including an interview of Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio. There are interviews of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, by Fox News as well as Ed Schultz.
And there are reports in print. One article from McClatchy reports on a poll finding that Canadians prefer their system. A lengthy St. Petersburg Times article compares the U.S. and Canadian systems, making Canada appear the winner.
One Boston Globe column by Jonathan Cohn supports single-payer. And a short op-ed, accompanied by two opposing op-eds, in the Los Angeles Times, was written by a Brit who wants to know what in the world is wrong with single-payer. He won't find an answer in the U.S. media, which is barely even willing to explain what single-payer is.
But an excerpt from a recent Washington Post article that did not mention single-payer may help make clear where our government and our government media are coming from:
"Private insurers have effectively engaged in rationing, so they're doing the dirty work for everybody else," said Jeff D. Emerson, a former health plan chief executive. "It's a thankless job . . . but somebody has to do it or health care will be even more expensive than it is now."
Private insurers might be better situated than the government to do the unpopular work of saying no, said Paul B. Ginsburg, president of the Center for Studying Health System Change, because they are less susceptible to political pressure.
There you have it. For-profit companies best serve the public interest precisely because they are not subject to public control.
Why? Because the public wants what is worst for the public. And how does the Washington Post know this? It has dinner with all the right people, and charges them for the privilege.
By the way, a similar search in Lexis-Nexis' blogs database turned up another 139 reports, with much more substance and honesty. And most blogs are not included in the search engine.

Show AllThis is at least the 4th or 5th time that CD has posted an article almost immediately after I referenced it in a post.
It can't be coincidence can it?
I linked to this article by David Swanson in the comments section of the piece by Norman Solomon a little over an hour before you posted it.
Not a big deal, I just find it amusing.
If you enjoy my "picks" I'd suggest you post Mike Whitney's columns from Counterpunch and ICH. His columns on the economy contain more quality information than Krugman and Baker combined.
"...there's always going to be somebody out there who thinks they're indestructible and doesn't want to get health care, doesn't bother getting health care..."
What a moron! Do you know anybody who needs their broken leg mended and "doesn't want to get health care"? I don't.
Have you known someone with cancer who "doesn't bother getting health care"? I don't.
...but I'm glad Obama will ocntinue to give you the "choice" to mortgage your home and go bankrupt when you get sick. Way to go obamanation!
I think single payer is the best way to go, but as this article shows there is no chance of a SP health care system happening in this country anytime soon-at least not till all the sell out congressman are voted out of office and lobbyists are banned from capitol hill.
But for President Obama to even mention it in a positive light at a press conference is significant. He probably thinks it's best option too, but knows he has no chance of getting it done.
There is good stuff in Obama's plan, though, especially banning insurance companies from using "pre-existing conditions" to deny coverage to insured. This policy has literally killed hundreds of thousands of people in America. Also, included are not denying coverage because of severe illness and/or cost, allowing Americans to buy prescription drugs overseas, not allowing pharmaceutical companies to payoff generic companies to not produce generic drugs, and allowing for a public health insurance plan, which will drastically drive down costs, and improving health care delivery.
These would be great improvements to our health care system, and the biggest part of future budget deficits (aside from the military) comes from health care. Health insurance companies have been ripping Americans off for too long. Obama's plan is a big step in the right direction.
So its time for the left to stop calling Obama an "Obamanation" (admittedly his military policies have been an obamanation thus far)and at least get with him on this. It is better than nothing. You can be sure Bush Jr, who virtually destroyed our system of government single handedly, would never have put such proposals on the table.
frankhammer July 23rd, 2009 1:59 pm..Who gives a crap what that treasonous bastard, Bush, would have done? He's gone, but not forgotten and will one day be prosecuted.
What is important, is what the people of this country want and need. IF they were given the facts about single payer through the criminally complicit MSM, they would no doubt opt for single payer. But, the truth and facts are kept from them and also confused with the "public option".
I guarantee this new healthcare bill will be the biggest regret since they pushed TARP up our you know what.
Back DK's amendment and DO NOT SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS.
Incidentally, what has Obama done to correct anything that Bush destroyed....mostly with the Patriot Act and the MCA....basically, the Bill of Rights and habeas corpus?
Has the torture stopped? Has the bombing of innocents stopped? Has the eavesdropping stopped? Will there be a new and REAL investigation of the false flag of 9/11??
Has ANYONE been held to account for eight years of atrocities??
Obama is just a softer sell and he's selling We the People down the tubes.
Easydoesit? You don't sound like it.
That Kuchinich Bill will never pass. It is better to take what you can get, and hope for single payer down the road. The whole system is bought out, from the corporate media to the Congress. I would be surprised if Obama even gets his bill passed, because the insurance companies and hospitals stand to lose hundreds of billions. A single payer system would virtually put them out of business.
As I said, I totally agree with you that Bush almost single handedly destroyed our system of government, or what was left of it. Our system of government has been steadily being dismantled since the Civil War.
But still, if there was no tarp or bailout, and all major investment firms and banks were let to fail like Lehman Brothers, the whole global system would have collapsed. China, for example, had/has hundreds of billions invested in AIG and Frannie and Freddie Mac. And there were dozens of countries in similar situations. The whole system would have collapsed; so there wasn't much else to do but bail them out. They're all crooks, but that doesn't justify destroying the system and descend into chaos. That's just throwing the baby out with the bath water. As Norman Thomas said, to paraphrase, things need to be done gradually, and capitalism and socialism can be a hybrid system and work.
frankhammer July 23rd, 2009 4:52 pm....."because the insurance companies and hospitals stand to lose hundreds of billions. A single payer system would virtually put them out of business" I doubt this very much...let them cut their expenses and outrageous executive salaries and compensation. We the people have had to tighten our belts..let them do the same. If they cannot make a decent living without gouging the average American, let them retool or file for bankruptcy.....an option pretty much taken off the table for the average "Joe and Jane" these days. Let THEM sleep in their cars.
"As I said, I totally agree with you that Bush almost single handedly destroyed our system of government, or what was left of it. Our system of government has been steadily being dismantled since the Civil War"......He did destroy it. What's left is only a fascade...and will be crumbling soon.
"But still, if there was no tarp or bailout, and all major investment firms and banks were let to fail like Lehman Brothers, the whole global system would have collapsed. China, for example, had/has hundreds of billions invested in AIG and Frannie and Freddie Mac"......Who cares? So far, they have admitted to not being able to account for half a trillion dollars in TARP funds that were already handed out. And that's what they have admitted to ...can you imagine the true figure?
" but that doesn't justify destroying the system and descend into chaos. That's just throwing the baby out with the bath water"..........We are in chaos and the system thrives on chaos as they steal trillions more. The MSM keeps it hidden as they always have and more so now, as fewer and fewer corporations own it all.
"As Norman Thomas said, to paraphrase, things need to be done gradually, and capitalism and socialism can be a hybrid system and work."....At least you did not say "democracy".
Someone....many "someones" must be held accountable for the theft, treason and outrageous lies of the past and now the current administration. WITHOUT THIS, anything built is built on a foundation of sand and the bodies of thousands if not millions of innocent beings.
easy does it, now!

FRANK: Your analysis doesn't explain why no regulations were put back into place to make sure the same machinations don't recur or continue! As in fact, they are! This makes Obama an enabler, particularly since all his financial advisors essentially come from the Goldman Sachs school of "enterprise," and have arrogated such power to themselves as to potentially think themselves deserving of access to the public's money which they have wasted on a slew of pseudo-products, and worst of all, managed to get the public to INSURE these entities devoid of worth! It's like pumping water into a well when it has a leak! No one bothered to fix the leak!
"But for President Obama to even mention it in a positive light at a press conference is significant. He probably thinks it's best option too, but knows he has no chance of getting it done. "
Is that why Americans voted for him, so he could "mention it in a positive light"?
even though "he has no chance of getting it done"?
Is that why Obama ran for office? To mention the best ways to go and then not get it done?
What was missing from Obama's speech was any reason why modeling the shape-shifting "public option" on the existing failed private insurance plans would improve the lot of Americans. Why base reform on the 35th best medical system in the industrialized world? when there are tried and true single payer systems that you could pick and choose from (France, UK, Canada etc).
Isn't Obama sumply using more slight of hand? "mentioning" the closing of Guantanamo prison while simultaneously exanding the torture centre in Bagram?
"mentioning" transparency and accountability, while expanding Bush's unitary executive powers to abduct, evesdrop, torture, and kill on his whim alone?
frankhammer, did you read the exchange Glenn Greenwald had with the tv reporter? The reporter said (as Colbert spoofed) that holding Obama and Bush accountable was only for a "perfect world". Your espousal of extreme incrimentalism makes it sound like you agree with him.
"It is better than nothing" You say. You base that on what, exactly?
I'd love to see Bush and Cheney get prosecuted, but it is simply not going to happen. Their actions to get the U.S. into Iraq and what they did after they got there were not only unconstitutional but also criminal. It was the worse case of war profiteering in all of history.
I'd wish a bunch of third party candidates, preferably socialist, were in Congress, too. But in my state the Green Party couldn't get on the 2008 presidential ballot without 79,000 votes. And there are 40 Green Party members in the state, and about 10 socialists. So I voted for Kuncinch for president in the primary, and he didn't even get 1% of the national vote. I even supported Hillary over Obama, and was attacked over that, especially on sites like this one. I knew Obama was a complete sellout when announced Biden as running mate.
The point is would you rather continue letting insurance companies continue to get the right to declare "pre-existing condition", when it kills thousands of people of year, or to continue to allow drug companies to block availability of overseas drugs that are cheaper, or for government to have no power to negotiate prices with drug companies on Medicare Part D, or not at least have an affordable public option to drive down private insurers' prices. These are still important issues here, that can bring down healthcare costs. It is better than what is going on now.
Obama wont even get this limited bill passed; and there is no way in hell that the powers that be will let a single payer health care system pass. Right now, unfortunately, the far left can do nothing about it.
You know, this is the attitude we really have to work on on the left. Single-payer is wildly popular - despite practically no worthwhile media coverage, in February 60% of Americans said they preferred it. Over the past few years, we've seen 64% of physicians, 65% in purple-state Pennsylvania, 73% in blue-state Massachusetts... It's garnered somewhere around the 60% mark in national polls for years. And that's people who explicitly want single-payer - not even to talk about the 81% that want reform in the first place who could be swayed.
This should be like taking candy from a baby. And there's 60 democrats in the senate, and a democratic president who came to power promising universal health care, and man... I just don't get where people get off thinking this is so impossible. They *want* us to think it's impossible. It's really not. Single-payer is more popular than Obama, people.
jove4015 July 23rd, 2009 8:17 pm...........Very well said....Write, email, call...march ..whatever the hell it takes. Once this half-assed healthcareless bill passes (big IF), we will be stuck with it for a long, long time. Please do not let the MSM and all the naysayers discourage this effort. We will regret it. Guaranteed!
Last night President Obama admitted that "single payer" is the only system that covers all Americans. Was that a slip of the tongue or was it being truthful for a change?
David Swanson
You need to do a better research.
I am a Canadian who has been blogging about Single-Payer on my own small blog, a 40 member Facebook group and numerous times on Huffington Post. In addition, I have been writing to President Obama several times a week since November about the benefits of Single-Payer.
Have you read HR 676? John Conyers, of Michigan, first proposed this bill in 2005. HR 676 covers 100% of Americans. This is the proposal that Dennis Kucinich was successful in adding as an amendment to HR 3200.
Have YOU done YOUR homework?
HR 676 has 85 co-sponsors in addition to numerous Labor Unions & Civic groups.
Read the list here:
http://www.johnconyers.com/hr676endorse
Read the complete text of HR 676 here:
http://thomas.loc.gov/home/gpoxmlc109/h676_ih.xml
Why am I doing this?
I am doing this because I HAVE SINGLE-PAYER Health Care. I KNOW how good it is. Canadians don't go bankrupt due to medical bills. We have FULL CHOICE of doctor and treatment options. We can switch doctors if we are not satisfied. We have the right to examine our complete medical records on request, including all doctor's notations.
Canadians are asked exactly 2 questions when we seek ANY health care.
1. Do you have your Health Card?
2. How may I help you today?
HR 676 is EVEN BETTER than my Canadian Single-Payer because it includes Dental, Drug, Vision & Apparatus. HR 676 is a bargain. The proposal from Congress is an administrative nightmare with entirely too much paperwork and red tape, by comparison to HR 676.
Do YOU trust Congress to determine what is "Affordable" for YOU? I sure wouldn't. They have no idea how the rest of the country lives.
Americans should settle for NOTHING LESS than Single-Payer. The 'public option' does not even begin to resemble Single-Payer. The public option will be run by those same insurance companies that overcharge you for and/or refuse you coverage. They don't deserve another chance.
Lily,
How can one join your Facebook group or keep up with your blog?
I'm very interested. Thanks!

You are entirely correct.
If SP is ever made an "idea whose time has come" in the minds of more of the Washington Whores, then it will be vigorously attacked as, "raising taxes" to pay for it. And we know by the major media that to raise taxes to pay for anything except the major bailouts for the gangsters on Wall St. and their own Whores, is completely nuts.
The time for SP is now.
It is more apparent why Dennis Kucinich was kept out of the last presidential elections......How's that for "CHOICE"?
The time to wrest the corporate strangulation of our country is now.
"If not now, when?"
Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power.
Benito Mussolini
The Right-Wing Noise Machine has been largely successful in rebranding this in the public mind to mean simply "thuggishness".
To too many Merkins, "Fascists" are the brownshirt proles that beat up ordinary people, such as in "Cabaret", while the leaders of I.G.Farben would simply be respectable businessmen.
The corporations own Congress. The best option for the majority of people and the majority of businesses in the U.S. would be single-payer health care. The Health Insurance racketeers along with the larger corporations have teamed up to deny US citizens effective health care.
If this isn't treason what is?
Bumper stickers, leaflets, community radio stations, email, person to person are some of the means that can be used to get the idea of real health care reform - i.e. Single Payer - and its benefits more widely known and understood. If we really want SP, we have to spread the word and inundate Congress with calls, faxes, emails and letters. Also keep the pressure on Senators and Representatives when they cynically do whirlwind tours of their states and districts.
Parallax July 23rd, 2009 5:56 pm ............Darn right...and if those methods fail, start marching. There MUST be a point at which Americans.....as selfish as many of us are.....start marching, if for nothing else ( 2 stolen elections, torture, false flags, genocide, infanticide, loss of habeas corpus, the illegal Patriot Act, eavesdropping, an orchestrated economic collapse, felonious bailout et al) at least for our OWN HEALTH.
