Windows Into Gaza
Two years ago, I lived and worked in the West Bank. My time there was certainly a window to understanding the occupation, but one that I could open and shut at my own convenience. Because of that, I never really understood. I could go to the beach in Israel while my Palestinian friends had never seen the sea. I promised myself that I would not go, but one hot summer day got the better of me. The idea of swimming in the turquoise Mediterranean waters was so appealing that I disappeared one Friday to join my Israeli friends in Tel Aviv. I returned to work the next day three shades darker to which my colleague promptly replied without a hint of jealously in his voice, "Go again next weekend, but this time do it for me."
And then there is Gaza. I had been to Gaza once as a student in Egypt seven years prior to moving to the West Bank at a time when settlement expansion was their primary fear. It was just months before the second Intifada, and I remember Yasser Arafat's brother Fadi telling me that things were about to get much worse. He spoke from the terrace room of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in Gaza City that he was running at the time. In between sips of whiskey he would point at the crowded camps beneath us where children were chasing each other in and out of narrow streets and partially shelled buildings and talk about their future. "Children shouldn't have to grow up like this," he sighed, "but Insha'Allah (God willing) it will get better for them after it gets worse."
When I returned to Gaza this March, I visited PRCS again to interview the director, Dr. Bashir Awdad who was describing in detail attacks on his ambulance drivers and the Al Awda Hospital during the war. We walked through the children's ward that had been totally destroyed and I ironically tripped over a box of charred burn salve. At one point, I snuck away to climb the ten flights of stairs to the terrace room where I had that conversation so long ago. Fadi Arafat is dead now, but his words blind-sided me when I finally emerged from the staircase. The space was totally gone, brightly painted walls and ceilings replaced by open sky. I walked across the top of the building in the rubble to the place that we had looked down at the children of Gaza. All of those buildings -- almost an entire block -- were gone.
Minutes later, I was in the back of a PRCS ambulance with a few of their volunteers on the way to spend time with the Samouni family in Zaytoun. Their story is one of the most egregious in this recent military assault, where at least 29 members of their family were killed. Nothing could have prepared me for hearing it first-hand.
We joined them where their house stood six weeks before, and their stories began to fill the space. I could tell they had done this before. I could also tell that their words were raw but they wanted to talk about what had happened to them, especially to international visitors. It was appalling. Sometimes it is so real that I experience it with them in my dreams and at other times I am numb. In any case, this is not about my nightmares. It is about their reality.
The sun started to set and PRCS rushed us out of the area because Zaytoun is near the constantly moving buffer zone, which increases the risk of air strikes despite the ceasefire. (The shape of the buffer zone keeps changing as Israeli authorities unilaterally determine the zone's boundaries.) One of the older women in the family grabbed my hand on the way out and softly asked me to return the next day. I gave her my word.
The next day I returned to Zaytoun, determined to suck it up and do some good reporting. We walked carefully from shelled house to shelled house, from where more of their stories unfolded. There was the boy who was trapped for days without food and water with his dead mother and siblings, the old man who "couldn't walk because there was a missile in his head", and the son who was buried alive up to his neck. Somewhere in the middle of the story, someone would usually pull out a gruesome photograph to prove that it was real and then pull out another one of that same person smiling and full of life. Children would run in and out, lifting up their shirts to show off their cuts and burns and bullet holes.
This little girl kept gently pulling on my blonde hair and dissolving into laughter. She would take my camera, run out of the room, and return with bunches of ridiculously blurry pictures and more little girls. I decided to take a break and spend some time with the children. I was looking for that line of balance between remembering the dead and celebrating life through the laughter of children.
All of the stories in Gaza obviously were not as heavy as those of the Samounis but they all shared in common a certain weight that comes with living in a fresh war zone.
A few nights later, I wound up in the home of a young Palestinian hip-hop group. Khaled and his crew had ‘the look' of rappers anywhere. They performed their latest song, all the time a proud mother cheerleading in the background. Their music was so enjoyable that it took me a moment to notice the pain under the surface. Lyrics about bombs and blasts, life under siege, and wanting freedom carried over into our conversations that lasted well into the night. "My parents always tell me to get off MySpace and Facebook," he said, "but what can I do? I am trapped here in Gaza and this computer is the only window for me to know what the normal world is like." (Khaled and I have been chatting on Facebook ever since.)
I think of these stories and so many others as I try to understand life in war and occupation and work to keep the window open while watching from the outside.

-------- The Horrors come so fast and frequent they bury each other ---------
Only by slowing the carnage can the Horror of what we do reach our conscienousness and heart.
Hats off and respect to Salena Tramel, Code Pink, Middle East Children's Alliance, George Galloway, Norah Barrows Friedman, Tristan Anderson and all the people who have the courage to stand up to racist imperialism to help the victims of one of the worst US-funded and sponsored atrocities so far in the 21st century.
The hate-filled racist propaganda machine that is the US MSM have reduced Palestinians to sub-human status, this alone is a crime against humanity.
Why don't the US MSM ever show television images of this suffering? It's the only way that it would make an impact on the American public.
On another note, why do the "progressives" of MSNBC. Olberman, Maddow, absolutely ignore the I/P topic?
chet380, Maddow in particular is a staunch Jewish Zionist that speaks quickly of the deadly rockets , the missiles the Palestinian Terrorists fire at Isreal.
The US MSM is of course not outright owned by Tel-Aviv. But, enough Jews, Israeli- Americans, work in, own parts of, produce for, and influence the MSM, that the subject of Israel is Sacred Only status or it is The Axe. For Anyone. Anywhere. Anytime.
Exactly like any US politician. They have to rise through the ranks, and early on their absolute fealty to Israel is demonstrated, and for always, or they too get The Axe.
Thus, it does not matter if one is progressive or not, if they desire to be a politician or work in media in the US, they will never, ever, vote against the interests of or say a word against Israel.
Because if they do, they know the campaign, the attack against them will begin the next day and they will be Finished. Fired. F*****.
Fear.
Unfortunately it seems that this Gaza massacre will be followed by ever greater atrocities both in Gaza and the West Bank. The increasing horror of the Israeli occupation is ever more apparent in all the world (even in USA) and so there is increasing rejection of Israeli fascism. This trend is designated as "anti-Semetism" by the Neocon Israelis and their allies, and they blame it on the Palestinians for their existence as an occupied people: if they didn't exist they wouldn't have to be destroyed. In this logic the Palestinian existence and suffering is somehow used by the "anti-semetic" "Nazi-communists" around the world (especially in the UNO!) to discredit Israel's right to exist. So the collective punishment of the Palestinians and the colonization of their remaining lands will be increased in the vain hope of the messianic Zionists that the Palestinians can be ceased to exist. It's a lunatic policy but there it is -- like the cycle that lead to the Masada.
There is no Occupation in Gaza.
Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.
What you have now in Gaza is a partial siege. (One that can be ended any day – if so chose the Hamas)
Ah, the Israeli Likudnik returneth. Another far-right hate-monger. These lies sound just like they are cut and pasted from Nethanyahu.
Since we seemed not to agree on what Occupation is, we could check the dictionary.
(Cut / paste from dictionaries not owned by Nethanyahu)
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Occupation
"the seizure and control of an area by military forces, esp. foreign territory."
(random house dictionary, 2009)
"Invasion, conquest, and control of a nation or territory by foreign armed forces."
(The American Heritage® Dictionary, 2009)
There are no Israeli troops seizure of Gaza or any other form of Israeli persence inside Gaza.
Partial siege is not seizure.
(And the reason I said partial siege and not siege is because Egypt control some of Gaza's borders, and in addition, Israel allows humanitarian aid to enter Gaza)
May I ask you Letto, if there is no occupation of Gaza, why are its inhabitants not allowed to move freely and exit the territory? Why is Israel forbidding entry of reconstruction materials, foodstuffs and medicine? Does this happen to any other places under "partial siege" as you call it?
And may I remind you that Hamas was democratically elected and has openly tried to talk with the Israeli government multiple times - only to be hit with further restrictions and air strikes. But of course, those who do not want to believe this can simply shut their eyes to the truth and keep on living in their pampered dream world existence while others suffer needlessly.
Shame on you.
Warning: Letto is not an American (he seems proud of that fact) and has not denied being an Israeli Likud party member. He obviously holds extreme right-wing, imperialist, racist views and does not believe that the indigenous Palestinian population deserves human rights and implicitly agrees with the killing women and children. He believes one group of people are inherently superior to another. Although I find these beliefs evil, I pity people like him as their hatred and violence will be their ultimate undoing.
He, like typical right-wing hate mongers, tries to justify ethnic cleansing, Apartheid and war crimes with the usual diversions and smoke screens. (reminds me of Dick Cheney). But hey, he is worth a laugh (although the topic is not funny, obviously)
Warning: Socialist is a person with highly developed imagination. He always see things that aren’t there.
socialist: "Warning: Letto is not an American, (he seems proud of that fact)"
I'm Canadian. I never said I’m proud not to be an American.
(Although in some cases, such as the lack of Universal Healthcare, I'm happy not to live in the states)
---
socialist: "has not denied being an Israeli Likud party member"
I'm not an Israeli Likud party member. Are you happy now?
---
Socialist: “He obviously holds extreme right-wing, imperialist, racist views and does not believe that the indigenous Palestinian population deserves human rights and implicitly agrees with the killing women and children.”
That’s absurd. Again, your highly developed imagination is working extra hours. I’m liberal who believed all humans are equal. (In case you were wondering, that’s including the Palestinians)
Can you show the readers where I implicitly agreed with killing of woman and children? I’ll bet you’ll simply ignore my question and shamelessly fade into the darkness without any proof for your absurd imaginary claims.
"Can you show the readers where I implicitly agreed with killing of woman and children?"
Hilarious - an overactive Zionist, and he wants us to believe he's anything but what Zionism has been exposed as.
No different than if a KKK apologist came on the board and demanded that we prove that he is NOT a racist!! You don't need to be a weather man to know which way the wind's blowing.
In short, you, Wanderer, don't have any proof.
Instead, out of desperation, you start swearing with false, unsupported accusations.
People are not racist just because you say so. You need to provide proof.
Perhapse you are socialist.
Socialist:
==========
Socialist, I'm still waiting for an answer. Don't let Wanderer divert us.
Can you show the readers where exactly I implicitly agreed with killing of woman and children?
Show your proof, or say you're sorry for your false accusations.
Swearing, huh?
Boy, you really zinged me with the, "Perhapse you are a socialist."
There's no "perhapse" as to what you Zionists are - genocidal invaders.
Socialist, don’t use Wanderer as an excuse to evade answer. (Assuming of course that you're not him)
I'm waiting for an answer for more than a day now.
Can you show the readers where exactly I implicitly agreed with killing of woman and children?
The arrogance you exhibit is astounding, but par for a Zionists.
Bigotry knows no shame.
It is no different than a KKK supporter coming on and then asking us to prove he's a racist. He is a racist, and it's so obvious that it is shameful he would even pretend otherwise.
How dare you? Isn't it enough that by cloaking your evil with the language of morality, you handicap those who are actually moral?
The definition of racism according to the dictionary:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/racist
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
Wanderer - Most Jews always wanted wars (Just because they are Jews). All Jews must be exposed for what they are (Evils)
Letto – All humans are equal. All nations are equal (Yes, even Jews).
All the evidences suggest that you, Wanderer, is racist, and not I. You, Wanderer , are more like KKK than I (Though KKK also hate black people and not just Jews as you are.)
Socialist, don’t use Wanderer as an excuse to evade answer. (Assuming of course that you're not him)
I'm waiting for an answer for more than 2 days now.
Can you show the readers where exactly I implicitly agreed with killing of woman and children?
You've had your answer, but like a good Zionist, you pretend otherwise.
Searching4Peace: “May I ask you Letto, if there is no occupation of Gaza, why are its inhabitants not allowed to move freely and exit the territory?”
Please re-read my comment from May 22nd, 2009 3:26 pm.
Gaza’s inhabitants not allowed moving freely and exiting the territory because they are under siege / blocade, and not because they are under occupation.
---
Searching4Peace: “Hamas was democratically elected and has openly tried to talk with the Israeli government multiple times - only to be hit with further restrictions and air strikes.”
Hamas was democratically elected. However, they were hit because they fired rockets against Israeli civilian targets, and not because they wanted to talk (As you falsely claim).

this is serious.

do you understand now ? i know you understand gobbldygook'.
whether you want to admit it or not.
i would translate it for you, but i'm tired of being accused of being anti-semitic by a racist (palestinian hate monger) who refuses to acknowledge other people's suffering.
little does letto know that by villifing palestinians (equating all palestinians as inhuman terrorists - even little kids) he is exhibiting RACIST tendencies. possibly punishable by law in the futre in europe according to his own EU draft on hate speech he conjured up the other day (a draft that was rejected by the EU, b/c of european muslim reaction) anyway.
could you explain that ? why are you demonizing these children w/ shrapnel wounds, bullet wounds, burnt faces, missing limbs, psychological scars - described by the author ?
they had it coming, right ?
it's understandable why israel would inflict this carnage upon innocent children ? right?
as the self appointed israeli spokesperson at CD, i expect you to start crying about rockets and a handful of people who were so desperate they would blow themselves up to make a point. but you never examine their desperation, you ignore the civilian casualties. therefore as far as i'm concerned - your words are worth less than gobbldygook.

i know, i know...i understand letto....
it's their fault (those, those iranian isalmic extremists).

Who? Stephen Harper?
I think you're losing your temper, iowablackbird.
Maybe you should drink something.
i don't need a drink, i'm not angry or mystified by your speech. very common, very sad.

I was touched by Salena Tramel's story. The Palestinian suffering is horrific. I never disputed that fact. I would never dream to villainies all the Palestinians. They are victims (at least 99% of them). And I don’t want to see anyone suffer, Israeli and Palestinian alike.
Nevertheless, their suffering is partly a direct result of the choices made by their leaders.
I’ll join your call for peace, a peace which will make life better to both Palestinians and Israelis.
"Nevertheless, their suffering is partly a direct result of the choices made by their leaders."
Yeah, sure, and Rachel Corrie threw herself under the Caterpillar. You're not interested in peace, never have been. Disgusting.
WARNING: Wanderer is a hard core anti-Semite.
In the past He/She claimed that the majority of Jews, always, throughout History, always wanted war.

Keep your racist BS comments to your Canadian self. You my friend are the worst racist hypocrite. Anti-Semite? your arguments are so freakin weak that is all you got???!! How pathetic! Your hatred and racism are there for all to see thanks.
Letto: typical racist imperialist, bugger off and go steal someone's land and kill their children, bulldoze their crops and then blame them for it.
Are you saying, socialist, that the following sentence is not anti-Semite?
"There's no majority of Jews in general that want peace. Never have been"
Hilarious. You know a Zionist has lost the argument when s/he pulls the "anti-Semite" out of his bu...
I responded above. I responded on every thread this Zionist has posted this, and he never seems to give links to the responses. And he never will, because his whiney attempt to manufacture some sort of prejudice no longer works. He's beating an empty drum. If anyone is too tired to look at my previous responses, I'll be happy to repost them.
As per your request, here is the link that prove you're an anti-Semite.

Nice. You've clearly lost the argument and have to resort to this.
It only further points out how shameful you Zionists are, and how desperately you need to manufacture the anti-Jewish bludgeon.

You can distort all you've want, just further indications that you will stoop to any level no matter how low to try to distract from the fact that you've lost the argument. Slimey, but par for a Zionist.
Letto says, "There is no Occupation in Gaza. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005."
Translation from AIPAC speak? "Who are you going to believe - us or your lying eyes?"
Check my comment from May 22nd, 2009 4:16 pm,
Are you now claiming that dictionaries published by “random house” and “American heritage” are also members of AIPAC?
I think you’re getting desperate Wanderer. Deal with the facts. If you think there is “Occupation” in Gaza, bring proofs instead of calling me names.
My lord, you want proof? Astounding - Zionists will stand in the middle of the day and tell you it's night time. No distortion, no lie, no denial of the truth however obvious, is ever too low for them.
In short, you don't have any proof.
You lost the debate.
IN short, you are a fucking racist idiot!
Horrified: "you are a fucking racist idiot!"
Sorry, calling me "a fucking racist idiot!" is not a proof that there is an "Occupation" in Gaza.
It's not even a proof that I'm a "fucking racist idiot!"
It only tells us that you know how to swear.
The arrogance you exhibit is astounding, but par for a Zionists.

thank you salena for your essay and thanks to CD for continuing to publish powerful first hand narratives of what is happening on the ground in gaza. how the people cope w/ the violence and tend to their daily lives, while living under the shadow of israeli military occupation.
salena's essay shows us human faces. people who are frequently globbed together, categorized and marginalized by the MSM. these personal narratives should be appearing daily in the NYT's.

I too am returning to Gaza this June embedded with the second contingent from CODE PINK:
CAIRO, Egypt -- May 21, 2009 – As more than 160 Americans and other citizens from around the world begin arriving in Cairo with the intent to cross into Gaza, the operators of Egyptian bus services say they been prohibited by the Egyptian tourist police from transporting them to the border. The groups, made up of four delegations on the Egyptian side and one on the Israeli side, are part of a CODEPINK campaign to bring humanitarian supplies and build playgrounds for the children of Gaza.
“We had chartered a private bus company to take us from Cairo to Al-Arish, the closest town to the Rafah crossing into Gaza,” explained Sandra Ruch, who is leading a delegation of Canadians on the humanitarian mission. “However, the operators told us that the government had prohibited them from taking us anywhere near the border. They obviously believe this tactic will keep us away, but we are determined. The Gazans are completely isolated and struggling to survive. We cannot abandon them.”
The 10-member Canadian delegation is scheduled to be followed by a 14-member group from New York and a contingent of 40 students. The largest of the CODEPINK delegations, numbering about 80, is scheduled to set off for the border on May 29 – just days ahead of President Barack Obama's landmark speech to the Arab world, planned for Cairo on June 4.
The CODEPINK delegations are invited to the Gaza Strip by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
The delegations plan to enter Gaza to focus attention on the need to lift the 21-month blockade and to deliver medical supplies, toys and sports equipment to the children there, who make up more than half of Gaza’s population. The groups are also bringing supplies for playgrounds, since many of the schools and playgrounds were bombed during Israel's invasion earlier this year, which killed more than 1,400, displaced more than 50,000 people and destroyed approximately 4,000 homes.
“The majority of Gazans are under 18, and many of the youth are traumatized and depressed," said delegation coordinator Pam Rasmussen. "Thousands are now living in rubble or cramped tents, while mourning the deaths of loved ones and struggling to support their families despite an unemployment rate in excess of 50 percent. It’s important for us to go there to show that the international community cares about their plight.”
The CODEPINK delegations are not alone. Three British medics began a hunger strike at the Egyptian border crossing on May 21 to protest being refused entry into Gaza to establish a cardiac surgery unit at al-Shifa Hospital, which currently has no such facility, and to help train medical students and junior doctors there. The British medics have been denied access to the Palestinian territory at the Rafah crossing since the beginning of May.
CODEPINK delegations say they are determined to get to the border and cross into Gaza. “We call on the Egyptian government to facilitate our travel to Gaza, not create obstacles,” said Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK: Women for Peace. “President Obama is coming to Egypt on June 4 to speak to the Arab world. He claims he wants to stand for peace and justice. We need to start by lifting the blockade of Gaza.”
I am in solidarity-but NOT wearing pink!
