Hiding Behind The Skirts Of Women
For eight years, many Americans have justified the war in Afghanistan as a moral battle to "protect" Afghan women. But Afghan women tell another story: more U.S. war will bear them more suffering.
Three decades of foreign occupation -- with little sign of ending -- have led to the complete collapse of more than a century of progress in Afghanistan for women's rights, which reached their peak in the 1970s. Occupation destroyed Afghan public services and created incredible poverty, a perfect void of power ready to be filled by the Taliban (encouraged by the U.S. to counter Soviet influence). Many Afghan women say the collapse poses a greater threat to women's lives: 87 percent are illiterate, 1,600 out of every 100,000 mothers die while giving birth or of related complications, and 1 and 3 women experience psychological, emotional or physical abuse.
Since the 2001 invasion, despite rhetoric of "saving" Afghan women, U.S. policies put in place did not do so. Meanwhile, this week, Congress is debating a $84.2 billion war funding bill that designates only 10 percent of the funds for development assistance -- the rest goes to military efforts. If the United States really cared about the women and children of Afghanistan, it would fund real needs-health care, education, food security- and minimize spending on weapons systems and combat troops. Gen. Petraeus himself outlined a counter-insurgency doctrine of 80 percent non-military and 20 percent military, and told the Associated Press earlier this year that "you don't kill or capture your way out of an industrial-strength insurgency."
But in the "save the women" argument, many say more troops will protect Afghan women from the Taliban. Not so -- increased troop presence will raise the risk as it further incites the Taliban and al-Qaeda and inspires more of their propaganda; as they strengthen, they further destabilize the country, spark many more to live in constant fear or to join the insurgency. Troops cannot defeat an ideology: a RAND Corporation study last year found that only seven percent of terrorist organizations gave up their violent activities as a result of military defeat.
In addition, more troops has led to more civilian deaths through raids, drone attacks and general violence. A 2009 United Nations report found more than 2,100 civilians were killed in Afghanistan last year, a 40 percent rise from 2007; about 700 were killed by international forces. Hundreds of Afghans, in student, women's and human rights' groups, have protested these conditions and called for their end (these protests were largely unreported, however). Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently warned that "we cannot succeed ... in Afghanistan by killing Afghan civilians."
The United States must quit hiding behind the skirts of Afghan women and come forward in support of real and sustained peace. Drone attacks, midnight home raids, and increased U.S. military presence only serves to alienate Afghans and fuel support for the Taliban's armed resistance. Afghan women are calling on the Obama administration and Congress for a surge in doctors, teachers, and economic development for food security, job training and infrastructure. If only they would listen.

Show AllHi hopedup,
It's simple. I'm sexist in favor of women by default. Because of aggressive insulting* racist sexist murdering pigs ruining this world. That are mostly men.
Do you have a hard time accepting that fact? Or do you justify a bit?
*Have a great night, joe.
So do you have a problem with someone who lives in a predominantly Afican American community saying "I'm racist in favor of white people by default. Because the people causing crime in this city. They are mostly black."
Does it matter if it's true statistically? Can you justify racism or sexism on that basis? If you think you can, then for what purpose? So that you can pre-judge a person without meeting them? on the basis of their gender? Skin color? Nationality? Sexuality?
Do you really think that cultivating prejudice is useful? Or is it just funny to you?
I think you are simply confused - semantically, that is. All you really want to do is state the fact that men fight wars and are commit more violent acts then women do. You don't need to go further than that - to make presumptions about human nature - to make blankets judgments on billions of people. There are too many contradictions in that line of thinking. As you should know, the phrase that "the exception proves the rule" is completely backwards.
Have you ever considered, for example, that vastly more men do not fight in wars than do, or that vastly more men do not commit acts of violence than do? How does this fit into your proudly asserted sexism?
If you had a son, would you tell him that a) he is "evil", b) that men are "evil" or c) just that some men (or most men? really? a majority?) are "evil" but not simply because they are men? If your answer is "c" then you aren't really sexist, now are you?
hi hopedup,
First racism. Okay, I am racist. I find more corazon de alma in Mexican people than their white brethren. I also have a lot of love for black people and kind of despise the oppressors. Who are mostly white male creeps who do not care about human life. Being on the other end of the gun, most blacks have way more going on than idiot whites.
Here is a truth. I just got done playing some blues on my Ibanez. Blues be from black people, and it also be the father and mother of rock and roll. White kids are so devoid of style they copy blacks who got it going on. Yeah, I'm kind of racist against white males and empathic towards people of color. Sue me.
If I had a son? Check this out, I raised two boys and one girl by myself.
What did I teach my boys? Same thing as the girl obviously, that kindness is good. To never ever ever hit a woman. I taught them this, "If a woman hits you, what do you do? Shake her hand and go to the gym and work out."
I taught them that war is evil and America perpetrates it.
I taught them that Love & God & Strength & Honesty were everything,
To always say please and thank you and excuse me.
I have three children that tell me they love me every day because of my insane dedication to them for two decades and ongoing to death.
Peace. Maybe your if I had a son crack was predicated on my sharing that I buried a baby boy. At that time I did not volunteer the fact that three lived.
Right now I am going to remember my promise to zmann and GoldenMean and wish you a wonderful evening. If we exchange posts tomorrow, it will be a new day and mayhap we will find we share some common ground.
you did mention semantics, we may both not be racist or sexist, and actually kind of arguing about terms....not unlike college students late at night in the dorms.
I have a great word for you, logomachy, which means arguing about the meanings and definitions of words, and one more, a must, logophile, obviously a Lover of Words....they are so intrinsic to it all. peacebro
How about "logogeny"...? It means "creation of words"... And one of the first words I made up....
"I find more corazon de alma in Mexican people than their white brethren."
There are no white Mexicans? Actually they are 9% of the population. While 60% are mestizo (Amerindian-Spanish). Are the mestizos only half-bad?

Skin color determines what is in a person's heart? You sounds like the bizzaro Lou Dobbs.

I'm glad you taught these things to your kids (except the God bit), but they are complete non sequitors. I wanted to know what you would teach your son about HIS gender, not the actions of other men, but about how his gender makes him a pig, yet the same is not true for your daughter. It reminds me of how some women are taught to look at themselves as the inferior gender. I feel you are doing the same in reverse.
The answer to racism or sexism is not to generate more of it in a different form.
Racial and gender equality is the only sane solution. Judge people as human beings. Judge them by their thoughts and actions. If you do not wish to have people prejudiced against you on the basis of your skin color (or gender), why would you adopt the same behavior? For what purpose?

I will say it's the "gotta-be-a-hero" in baptismal blood rituals to Mars that makes too many that way, not that they inherently ARE all that. And as a few point out, there are a few "daughters of Mars" who in terms of myth more accurately stem from the head of their father, Zeus-Jupiter.
Consciousness can change behavior and attitudes, this is why working towards shifting consciousness is one key remedy for our times and its inhabitants of both genders.
OMG
Hey AZJoe,
What you say is beautiful and true. And I agree. I've been saying the same thing, that I'm a sexist and a women's lib'r, even though I'm a "white male".
When I go to town with my "wife" (a term we both avoid because we are equal co-creators of family - I don't own her - wife sounds like a possession, which she is not) I let her do the shopping in those supermarkets where they have those Glamour type magazines on the racks by the checkers. I sit in the car and read progressive journalism.
I DO go in with her to the organic food store. Yeah, even though we have a big garden, there are some things our garden in northwest Montana cannot produce.
So it's guys like us that need to be the balance for all those guys who put on the macho front to hide their insecurities.

And since I still have the option to edit this, I take the opportunity to add my condolences for your loss and grief. This may sound insensitive and cliche, but don't worry, be happy. You know that song? It's by Bobby McFerrin.
I won't include the lyrics or tabs, but look it up; starts in D, Em G, and back to D. That simple song is guaranteed to lift the spirits! Try it, bro!
PEACE and LOVE!!
For a very compelling look into the continual struggle of women in war torn Afghanistan read "Walking The Precipice" by Barbara Bick...great read
if only every person would try to talk and understand things out, then there would be no killings. the civilians would be safe if only there was peace. but peace now is not as easy as a simple blood compact. there are many things that are needed to be talked to be able to commit peace. all parties should agree on one issue to attain peace.

GoldenMean, logogeny, precioso! And creating a word about creating words that is graceful to articulate, a flower in the meadow of language,
Luciplicity, after GM's 5:06 p.m., I was floored, then your 12:58 p.m post....
IowaBB, thank you for being who you are, being part of CD's soul.
Sioux Rose, you are a natural catalyst for true thought in us all, I humbly agree, this thread evolved into the best CD can be. Absent some members of the family, but we are an extended one after all.
On the off chance that a Common Dream's person reads this, Thank You, as Lucipliciity says so gracefully in his 1:10 post you are much more than a progressive news web-site, our collective consciousness attains a spiritual oneness on our good days, and, let us tell no one, there might even be Love in enough hearts at times that one can reach out and touch it.
Because we usually discuss life & death, war, struggle and the malaise, the entropy and darkness within the human spirit, when we are able to celebrate the Light, Love and our Oneness, it is cool water flowing past, a soft wind, the ruminations of newborn fawns.
Oh I'm sorry - I thought this was a comments area. Instead it's turned into a 12 step meeting for people who love to congratulate each other and pat themselves on the back.
Now back to regular programming.
Yep.
You people are beautiful and I love you all! You know who you are. Thank-you for all the insightful sharing!
Love is in the air...
Let's keep the good vibes going, shall we? Maybe we can dance the negativity away and laugh it out of existence!
Shanti Om~~~
I like that comment a lot. I wished JenniferB were here to see this and enlighten her spirits. I had a little grieving yesterday when I heard the news in yesterday's article on single payer where Baucus evaded the single payer advocates again. If only we could get the politicians to actually love us all and not pit us against each other. I think that your idea of getting rid of the national currency which you mentioned on another post and going local would finally force Washington to get in touch for a change.
Change we can believe in, bro!
BTW, Sorry about Baucus. I won't vote for him ever again, I promise.
Hi Md, wow glad you dropped in, this thread morphed into a uniquely ethereal sharing, did you get your fire started?
My six girls are gorgeous, asleep now, 9:30 is their bedtime, they rise at 9:30.
July 10th....they are Strawberry Cough, a rare genus, a fast cycle.
You made me pick up my guitar and bong when I saw your post.
The rampant degeneracy. At least the local delinquents aren't drunk or on bs ecstasy. They ate mushrooms instead the little devils, one's walking around saying, "no more slippers," and sounds quite happy.
I simply don't know what the world is coming to.
Yo AZ, wish I had some of your clones, or seeds (not that you'd have seeds for sc).
I'm glad I live in the sticks where Babylon is not in my face. Whenever we take a trip somewhere, like Seattle (which has a lot of beautiful souls living there, EMP, Fremont, Pike Market, Folklife, etc) it's always good to get back home to the country.
Reading the above threads has taken me on a Magical Mystery Tour. I'm liking what folks like GoldenMean, Luciplicity, iowablackbird and you are talking about. Beautiful words.
Keep playing that guitar and keep the little girls happy, and they will give back even more love.
One more thing. Here's a fun 2 minute video called A Brief History of Weed. Enjoy!

Peace, Love and true Inity, Moondoggy
Sometimes, I feel sad to see the oppression women go through even today that I almost feel like changing my gender so that I can not only feel their pain in full but take everything I know about men and help other women be able to use it against abusive men.
I don't think you have to go through sex change to understand women perfectly. After all, the only difference between the two sexes are the hormones that control the looks of their muscles and their voices. I have seen women go against their own sex such as Helen Smith and Ann Coulter for thinking women are too soft just as I have seen men go against their own when some have been fed up with their own being the bullying type. We need good men like you to help stand up for gender equality and respect so I'd hold off on that sex change if I were you.
