Walking Out on Ahmadinejad was Just Plain Childish
What are we trying to say? That any mention of Israel is now barred?
Isn't it time western diplomats just grew up and stopped these infantile games over President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? All that this play-acting over boycotting of conferences because of his presence and walking out because of his words achieves is to flatter his ego, boost his poll ratings at home and play into the hands of an Israel that is desperate to prove Iran the gravest threat to its existence.
True, Iran's President is not the world's most endearing character. Some of the things he says are certainly contentious. But he is far from the most offensive leader on the block at the moment. With Silvio Berlusconi sounding off about women and sex, and Nicolas Sarkozy sounding off about everything from the quality of his fellow leaders to the unsuitability of Muslims to join the civilised nations, and a Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, giving his views on gays, Europe could claim its fair share of premiers who should not be allowed out in public.
Read Ahmadinejad's address at the UN conference on racism in Geneva this week and there is little to surprise and a certain amount to be agreed with. His accusations against the imperial powers for what they did with colonial rule and the business of slavery is pretty much part of the school curriculum now. His anger at the way the economic crisis originated in the West but has hit worst the innocent of the developing world would find a ready echo (and did) among most of the delegates.
It was not for this, however, that the countries of Europe and North America gathered up their skirts and walked out of Ahmadinejad's peroration. The UK's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Peter Gooderham, rather gave the game away when he said afterwards: "As soon as President Ahmadinejad started talking about Israel, that was the cue for us to walk out. We agreed in advance that if there was any such rhetoric there would be no tolerance for it." The Iranian leader, he went on to say, was guilty of anti-Semitisim.
Just how you can accuse a man of anti-Semitisim when you haven't stayed to hear him talk is one of those questions which the Foreign Office no doubt trains its diplomats to explain. But what basically was our representative trying to say here? That any mention of the word Israel is barred from international discussions? That the mere mention of it is enough to have the Western governments combine to still it? In fact, Ahmadinejad's speech was not anti-Semitic, not in the strict sense of the word. Nowhere in his speech did he mention his oft-quoted suggestion that Israel be expunged from the map of the world. At no point did he mention the word "Jews", only "Zionists", and then specifically in an Israeli context. Nor did he repeat his infamous Holocaust denials, although he did reportedly refer to it slightingly as "ambiguous" in its evidence.
Instead, he launched the time-honoured Middle Eastern accusation that Israel was an alien country imposed on the local population by the West, out of its own guilt for the genocide; that it was supported by a Zionist take-over of Western politics and that it pursued racist policies towards the Palestinians. Now you may find these calls offensive or far-fetched (if there is a Zionist world conspiracy, it is making a singularly bad job of it) but it is pretty much the standard view in the Muslim world. Western support of Israel is seen as a conspiracy, and it is not just prejudice. There are now books by Western academics arguing that the pro-Israeli lobby wields an influence in the US out of all proportion to its numbers. If the Western walkout in Geneva did nothing else, it rather proved the point.
Nor is it far-fetched to charge Israel with being a racist state. As the only country in the world that defines itself and its immigrants on racial grounds, it could be regarded as fair comment. And if you doubt that this founding principle leads Israel into racist attitudes to non-Israelis, then you only have to read the comments of its new Foreign Secretary, Avigdor Lieberman, to disabuse you.
Of course, Ahamadinejad was playing to his home audience. He is a politician facing re-election at a time when his domestic economic record makes him vulnerable. Most of the educated class are fed up with his cavorting on the world stage while his country goes from wrack to ruin. And, of course, international conferences of this sort, intended to spread sweetness and light, are not the most appropriate forums for such tirades.
But on these issues he does speak for the majority not just in Iran but in the region. Deny that view a hearing and you will only increase the resentment and the sense of a Western world set up against them. Which is precisely what our oh-so-sanctimonious representatives achieved this week.

Show AllSo you'd have sat happily and listened to his racist rant then clapped afterwords? No, they walked out because they knew what was coming. The independent is a trashy and evil paper.
What do you care about race anyway? All you want is their oil for your pigheaded lifestyle !
Morning, Ms. Bedingfield
I am very happy to see you still here., I was sort of worried that the unscrupulous and unwarranted attacks upon you by the usual sources might have led to your departure.
His outing of Israel as a racist state, which it certainly is.....is racist? Yes, and black is white, down is up, and the very, very wrong is suddenly right!
yeah and Iran is such a beacon of human rights...
I dare you to go walk down the streets of Tehran calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality.
As if the USA was such a beacon....
It might interest you to know that, after the events of 9/11, there were candlelight processions through the streets of Tehran in support of the USA.
Perspective is such a lost art.
It hasn't been lately.
So, does the holding of a candle excuse the crimes committed against homosexuals and women every day?
You say perspective is such a lost are well had you just simply bothered to read what i had written you would have realized i wasn't defending the US but rather pointing out the hypocrisy.
Ahamadinejad is no more qualified to speak out about human rights than George Bush!
"yeah and Iran is such a beacon of human rights...
I dare you to go walk down the streets of Tehran calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality."

"You say perspective is such a lost are well had you just simply bothered to read what i had written you would have realized i wasn't defending the US but rather pointing out the hypocrisy."
I fail to see any corroboration for your position. Your first post did not at all infer what your second effort concluded. I can certainly read what you write, but not what you thought you wrote.
Certainly Islam prohibits homosexual acts, as it does premarital or extramarital sex. So does Christianity in fact, and the laws of these United States as well.
See how easy it is to point out hypocrisy? If that is indeed what you intended.

I believe that you might have missed his "point".

Actually, Ahmadinejad was completely refreshing in his honesty. The only part of his speach that I did not like was all the stuff about God, "Praise be to Allah" and so forth. The rest of what he said was all true.
A conference about racism where one cannot mention the elephant in the lounge room, the racist state of Israel is not worth having. Someone needed to give the speach that Ahmadinejad gave, and all the idiots who played "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil", should stay out, as they obviously did not come there to be constructive.
One sits and listens, applause optional, because that is what diplomats and ambassadors do in a rational world. Not your ridiculous parody of a world though.
I would have been happy to listen to Pres. Achmedinejad. Live with it!
Mr. Ahamadinejad is a brown-skinned foreigner with a long, unpronounceable name.
Thus, he may be reviled and repudiated with impunity by any self-important blowhard who wants to be seen as standing with the Civilized and Respectable nations. Columbia University president Lee Bollinger, who "dared" to be openly rude and condescending to Ahamadinejad, an invited guest to Columbia, is a paragon of self-important blowhards.
The professional charlatans who walked out on Ahamadinejad put the "dip" in "diplomat".

Ahamadinejad is obviously an opportunist, however, his statement accusing Zionists of being racists is completely true.
Ahamadnejad is an opportunist? Well, so is most of the world. I'm more concerned about his Islamic homophobia. What he has to say about Israel reflects the Muslim world, and is beginning to reflect the opinions of many more, since Israel is doing everything in its power to corroborate those opinions.
Wouldnt you agree that it isnt HIS homophobia, any more than the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding such belongs to the Bishop of New York ( for instance).
Hear, hear!
Israel IS a racist, apartheid state, and no amount of walking out when people state the truth can change the facts. Even the CIA predicts that Israel, as a special "Jewish" state, will disappear within 20 years. The world has lost its tolerance for colonialism.
Through their 60-year-long history, the Israeli Zionists have never stopped stealing Palestinian land and water. They have stolen so much land that they have made a two-state solution impossible, and soon will have to decide: return home to Europe or the U.S., or remain in the state formerly-known-as-Israel and get used to the idea of living in peace, with justice, not apartheid, with their fellow citizens, most of whom will be Palestinians, the indigenous people.
Ahamadinejad has never called for the "destruction" of Jews. He has called for the end of the apartheid state of Israel, and most of the world joins him in this hope, just as most of the world supported the end of the apartheid state of South Africa. The diplomats who marched out of the conference as soon as Ahamadinejad mentioned "Israel" just illustrated once again that Israel wags the U.S. dog.
Right, and his "oft quoted" call to "Wipe Israel off the Map" is MISQUOTED, as shown over and over and over again. One wonders if this mythical quote will ever stop circulating?

peace and love.
Some one please give me a logical argument as to why "Zionism is racism"
Thank you in advance.
NO, thank you in advance for describing how it isn't such, explaining at a minimum
cattle like sequestering of actual people in caged Gaza
elimination of free access, water, supplies, and food
Targeted destruction of sewage treatment and farmlands
unrelenting terror and collective punishment, for attempting to just stay alive`
Apartheid "separate & unequal", like super highways
Disproportion mass murder war crimes, shooting innocent Palestinians in a barrel
This is just a starting point, as others have more complete and accurate descriptions, from actual visits to Gaza …

Zionism is a racist ideology because it discriminates against people based on ethnicity. It is interesting that in no other case is there any confusion. If Aryan Nations calls for an exclusive "White State" that deprives non-whites of their rights, does anyone have to ask if that is racist?
In Israel, the Ashkenazi (European Jews) are first class citizens, the "brown" Jews (Mizrahi and Sephardic) are second class citizens, the "black" (Ethiopian) Jews are third class citizens, and a PORTION of the remnant Palestinian population has fourth class status. The rest of the Palestinians (the majority) are "stateless persons" with no rights at all. Israel rapes, murders, vandalizes, and razes everything in its path, just as long as the victims are of the "wrong" ethnicity (not Jews).
These are the FACTS. If America started treating African Americans the way Israel treats Palestinians, the whole world would SCREAM racism and everyone would recognize it. ONLY Israel is allowed to be racist and not be called out for it!
Ahmadinejad's speach answers precisely that. Please listent to it more carefully.
I read that banning the mention of Israel is the Roths-childs intent (hyphenated for my paranoia). Careful with websites about them besides Wikipedia and their bank's site. I got a Trojan from the site of one of their most popular critics.
My computer also went into meltdown mode immediately after I had visited a site of a popular critic of "them". Damn, I was gonna just write it off as paranoia too...
Could you tell us which site they booby-trapped? It would be helpful to know.

-Some one please give me a logical argument as to why "Zionism is racism"
Errr, mr. Logic, who said "Zionism is racism"? You type a quote, from where? outerspace? and demand that someone prove it to be true.
Well it would seem that zionism is, zionism. And racism is, suprise!, racism. Maybe that is why we use different words to describe them!
But if you have any questions regarding the article, and not just fallacious diversions, be my guest.
That demand for 'proof' (logical argument in this case) is a typical Zionist ploy using repeated obtuseness as weapon. Give them the proof and they just side step to another obtuse demand for the same.
Jesus returned in 1993. Both of the then living true believers were caught up in the air to meet him.
When God ordered Abraham to slay Isaac, God was hoping Abraham would defiantly refuse. After wandering the Sinai desert for 40 years, God offered the children of Abraham all the land of Canaan if they'd kill its every inhabitant. God was hoping for a similar refusal. The Israelites couldn't bring themselves to kill everyone, so God didn't give up on the people he chose to irredemiably humiliate.
This odd little diatribe is meant to be neither anti-semitic nor anti-christian. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of that which is unseen," may indicate we have 'evidence' but not 'proof' of the existence of God and an Afterlife. Once we profess to speak for God, the further from God (or that highest moral imperative) we must be. Just as Jewish people still live the Old Testament, so too most christians who worship Jesus for his 'blood sacrificial' death and resurrection rather than for his life of selfless concern for others and his unexpected tirade against the merchants in the temple.
Mr. Hamilton
If you can't distinguish between discussion and racism perhaps you should stop writing. Did you hear anything different? I thought not. Asserting that the Holocaust never happened is not something that would lend credibility to listening to a speaker in the first place.
I personally hate racism. I detest those that indulge in it, but being on the Left certainly does not excuse racism or associations with those that do practice it. Racism is not a pick your side event. Its quite clear when someone indulges in it.
I believe its clear who is indulging in infantile games here.
Noble words never make up for intelligent analysis. Try harder Mr. More.
I do disclaim the negativity towards you regarding racism, I do not believe you are such a one, but some of your beliefs echo those of avowed racists sometimes, thus the confusion.
Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela recognize Israel is racist state.
But, of course, those two are niggers. Or do you racists prefer derogating them as negroes or people who should be destroyed so you can build your fantasy world of white trash?
As a resident of Canada, one of the countries that walked out on listening to this foreigner talk of things only white people truly understand... all I can say is that I'm proud my nation state is a member of the Naked Emperor's Fan Club.
Doesn't the first black president of the USA look beautiful boycotting a racism conference to defend moneyed interests who practice apartheid.
The funny thing is; I am more than sure Ahamadinejad never said the word "Israel", as this article claims. He more than likely used the passive aggressive "Zionist entity" in referring to Israel.
As opposed to the blatantly racist "There is no such thing as a Palestinian"?
STFU mossad
Gee, and I thought that the idea of a United Nations was to communicate, which has both a listening and speaking component to it. We may not like the message, but IF we're going to stay a member of this organization, we should give each member the respect to 'listen' to what is said. To do otherwise is disrespect of others as well as ourselves. Walking out was indeed childish.
Thanks for a lesson in ... gasp! ... common sense.
Yes indeed: CHILDISH, IMMATURE, ADOLESCENT ... especially the ol' U S of A
But what else can you say for a people, many of whom live their entire lives, unreconciled to the basic realities of of the biological world they are part of, including accepting their own bodies, and the details of sexuality as it exists ... not as someone tells them it is"supposed to be." Order, demand, attack, punish, blame, but never, simply, accept ...
Oh , yeah I must be one of the "hate America" crowd, right?
To any Bozo that feels so inclined to accuse me:
Those who inflame the ire of over half the world, giving them basically no decent option to participate (or even opine) in decisions that determine their daily lives, YOU do the greatest imaginable harm to the America you so claim to "love." What you LOVE is convenience and "me first" economic advantages without any need to consider anyone else.
Those who cannot grasp their own humanity (that is, to be a PART of humanity, sharing the finite resources of this finite planet with other people and creatures), then you have basically missed the lessons of life, and play, hypnotized by your own rules, whether you attribute them to your own head, your desires, or your holy book. It is illusion, demeaning to the others sharing the planet.
Be a "player." TALK with others you don't fully comprehend or agree with. Stop trying to insult or destroy them. Salvador Allende was one of the most prepared, most dedicated promoters of participatory democracy this world has ever seen. THAT did not stop Nixon and Kissinger from doing everything in their power to have him removed from office, and finally participating in his death while defending his elected government.
It's NOT about Ahmadinejad. It's about official US "attitude" towards ANY leader the US oligarchy disagrees with. For better or worse, at this moment Ahmadinejad is a spokesperson for his country. He speaks no worse, nor more threateningly than W.
