Obama's Very Own Quagmire
Will Barack Obama provide a way out of Afghanistan? Perhaps. But I'm not optimistic. The new U.S. president talks about the importance of diplomacy and development. However, his actions so far have focused on extending the war.
Obama is continuing the policy, started by his predecessor George W. Bush, of bombing suspected Taliban hideouts in Pakistan. As well, the U.S. has sent about 70 military "advisers" into that country.
We shouldn't be surprised. When he was campaigning for the presidency, Obama promised to vigorously pursue the Taliban into their Pakistani sanctuaries. At the time, he was criticized as naive. The smart money said he'd never follow through. Apparently, the smart money was wrong.
In fact, Obama's Afghan strategy seems remarkably similar to that of Bush. Bush, too, embraced the so-called three D's, defence, development and diplomacy, all of which have been U.S. and NATO orthodoxy since 2003.
It's true that in the early years of the war Bush focused solely on force of arms. As then defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld famously noted, America wasn't in the business of nation-building.
But by 2003, that began to change. As the Taliban regrouped, the U.S. realized that it was caught in a full-scale insurgency that required a more sophisticated response.
That in turn led to the development of so-called provincial reconstruction teams, military-led operations aimed at providing both security and development to Afghan villagers. It also led the U.S. to have NATO allies like Canada take on a larger role.
Ordinary NATO troops would provide on-the-ground security for Afghan villagers; commando units would locate suspected Taliban militants; air power would kill them.
That was Bush's strategy. And it was the strategy pursued by the man he chose to replace Rumsfeld, Robert Gates. Given that Obama has kept Gates on as defence secretary, this appears to be the new president's strategy as well.
The key difference is that Obama plans to operate on a larger scale. He is sending 17,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan. He will almost certainly send more.
The problem with the Bush-Rumsfeld-Gates strategy was that it didn't work. Too often, the commandos shot up the wrong compounds. Too often, the airplanes bombed the wrong buildings.
The U.S. and NATO won all the military engagements and lost all the political ones.
On the ground, foreign troops had to spend too much time defending themselves from attack to encourage development.
Over the years, as casualties mounted, NATO countries like Canada switched from battling the Taliban to training Afghans to battle the Taliban.
That hasn't worked either. Obama now plans to arm tribal militias to do the job.
On the diplomatic front, American officials are finally talking to all neighbouring countries, including Iran. But there is no indication that the new administration wants to encourage serious talks with the Taliban. Indeed, Obama seems to be disowning Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has tried such negotiations.
Obama is to formally lay out his full Afghan strategy next month. But his actions to date give a good idea of what it will be: more money; more troops; a wider war.
Shades of Vietnam. Shades too of Lyndon Johnson, the U.S. president whose decision to send in the Marines turned that so-called brush-fire war into an all-out conflagration.

Show AllMOBILIZE !!!!!!!!! Geneva Afghan Peace Conference NOW!!!!!!
Tell Obama he is a great bloody FOOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for all the work you have done to unmask Obama as a trojan horse for American imperialism. Your "Black Agenda Report" is a must-read for not only politically concerned African-Americans, but all people of conscience.
Sooner or later, the Empire is toast. Better to end it ourselves than see it end in rubble and ashes because our Elites were blind to their own folly.
Barack Obama talks about the importance of development.
"Development" used to be called "Foreign Aid". They're both euphemisms for theft. The reason we'll never accomplish anything in Afghanistan is because the side we're backing is totally corrupt and steals nearly everything meant for "development". That's also what "Smart Money" means. The money that is stolen by Karzai and his wise guys who'll slip out of the country once it finally goes down.
If he really is stupid enough to follow thru on this madness he'll have nothing else but another failed and criminal war for his legacy, just like Bush. He won't accomplish a damned thing domestically if he's determined to be another wartime president like his idiot predecessor. Forget economic recovery, it'll never happen. But the war machine will be further enriched, and that's all that really matters. Apparently that's why he got elected. It had less than nothing to do with hope and change, except in the minds of too many gullible Americans.
But what if that's what gets him reelected? I don't support the ongoing wars or the continuation of Reaganomics but uh, how do we get a better candidate in amidst us dummies?

Maybe Obama wants his war too!!! (It does fuel the economy, whether we like it or no.)
Talk about penis envy.
But I could be wrong !
But I could be wrong !
But you're not.
I think you are.
As a matter of fact, wars do not fuel an economy--except overseas. Everything we make (and pay to make), whether soldiers, uniforms, guns, bombs or vehicles, goes overseas to be destroyed. War is a net drain on our resources; it puts nothing back into the local economy except the wages of a relatively few workers and the hands of an army of lobbyists to get Congress to keep the old game going for more and more profit to the same old military-capitalist-congressional class.

another idiotic analysis about policies and strategies and quagmires.
while studiously avoiding any mention of all those bloody bodies lying around Afghanistan. Bodies of women and children and old people who can't even read or write but still terrorize Obama and the dingbats who advise him. Because he thinks they will- um exactly what barack? one of thos surviving toddlers might pick up a leftover piece of her freshly bombed mud hut and throw it at
you?
get out get out get out
One can only hope, admittedly probably unrealistically, that this is a clever tactic in a sage strategy. Obama could use the surge to put additional pressure on the various groups to negotiate, and thus end the war. Or he could follow the conventional wisdom dispensed by political, academic and foreign policy geniuses and sink deeper into the tar pit, the graveyard of empires.
Surely Obama, with his intelligence and open mindedness, realizes that intensifying military operations inevitably increases civilian casualties and privations and leads to more extremism. It is a classic positive feedback loop of the kind Barbara Tuchman described in her brilliant classic The March of Folly. Someone should give Obama a copy because, unlike his predecessor, he just might read and comprehend it.
Obama's hero is Lincoln. Lincoln was a war president. Lincoln was willing to disregard constitutional rights when he felt that was useful. Lincoln was willing to send tens of thousands to their deaths or dismemberment in order to deny self government to the secessionist states. Read a biography of Lincoln, as Obama certainly has, and you will find a very complex (I thought of using the word twisted but thought better of it) character. We are in very interesting times...
However you slice it, there are people in Afghanistan committed by religious fanaticism to wreaking havoc on the west. Everyone agrees Obama is a master politician. A large swath of voters felt from the get-go that Bush was fighting the wrong war, and that--among other things--brought the GOP down. It's ugly, and I don't think he needs it, but going after the people who actually hit us on 9/11
will turn millions of fence-sitters into Obamamaniacs, and insure a second term regardless of the economy.
If Obama went after the people who orchestrated 911, he would have an "accident" or be "lone gunman"ed before he could even act...
Why else would he be calling to "look forward" and not investigate 911, election fraud, war crimes, etal...
The Secret Service detail that protects him from enemies "foreign & domestic" also answer to a "higher calling" if necessary...
Cheney and HWBush were the Cold War power players who were merely tools of the Elite, willing to conduct horriffic crimes against humanity to please their Blueblood masters who definitely have an agenda for global hegemony and "Full-spectrum Dominance"...
The CIA clandestine operations to install dictators in resource-rich countries around the world for the last sixty some years...
made possible the build up of US military bases in over 130 countries, the creation of a privatized prison-military contractor-industrial food complex, the dominance of Wall Street over family farmers in "developing" nations, including the US through usurious debt schemes...
And privatization of the national infrastructure here at home and abroad... When their puppet govts cannot payback the interest on the World Bank loans for military equipment and made by the MIC, IMF austerity measures ensure that they convert to a cash crop export economy, "open up" their markets to dumping of subsidized US surplus food, bankrupting rural farmers worldwide... who leave the land to find wage-slave jobs in Foreign owned factories in "free trade zones" that pay no taxes back to that country...
With the global War on Communism, then Narco-traffickers, and now Terrorists, the Globalists are able to use legislatures, courts, and police to do legal (albeit unconstitutional) search, seizure of ALL assets, incarceration in for-profit US prisons (yet subsidized by tax payers) And also utilize the US military (School of the Americas/WHISC), military contractors, paramilitary death squads, and mercenaries to clear the peasants off their ancestrial land at gun point, fight the Marxists, and operate as a protection racket for the Heroin and Cocaine distribution routes for the global crime syndicate and their regional cartels...
Now think of the millions of folks who are the foot soldiers and leutenants in this Underworld... Most don't have a clue who the Capo do Capo is... Only a few thousand folks are actually "in on" any policy decisions being made when it comes to geopolitical events...
Some are more powerful than others...
If Obama tried to rock this boat... He would be dead before he hit the water...
I think at best, he can do damage control, until the ship sinks under it's own weight...
