The Future of Civilization
The tight, absurd parameters of "peace," as they are drawn by the military model we continue to believe in, make real peace -neither bitter nor temporary - impossible even to imagine. God save us, for instance, from New York Times editorials, which inflict as much damage on civilians as F-16s.
"Israel must defend itself," the paper intoned a few days into the bombing attack on Gaza that quickly left 350 people dead, expressing regret only that the action was "unlikely to weaken" Hamas. The editorial affected a neutral assessment of the situation that failed to mention either the Israeli occupation of Palestine or the month-and-half-long blockade of Gaza that preceded the bombardment and, among much other deprivation, left the region's few hospitals drastically undersupplied with medicine, gauze or even space to treat the flood of newly wounded.
With that omission securely in place, and clear signals emanating from every sentence that the right of heavily armed U.S. allies to bomb powerless Third World "enemies" into good behavior would not be questioned, the Times editorial remembered its compassionate side sufficiently to declare: "Israel must make every effort to limit civilian casualties."
How decent of them. Or as Jerry Seinfeld might have put it: Yada yada yada.
I quote from the Times, of course, not as one paper among thousands, but as the Paper of Record and exemplar of the mainstream, corporate media's unified voice on geopolitics and the future of civilization. This is the voice of moral relativism and denial. Nowhere in it is there room for something other than a military solution to chronic global troubles, and that solution flows in only one direction. And nowhere is there the least real humanity toward the punishees, whose role is to suffer, die and retaliate just enough to keep the cycle going for another round. "Israel must defend itself . . ."
And thus the civilian dead - whatever that term actually means - merit the barest sniff of a eulogy as, alas, the regrettable byproduct of the high-tech pummeling their country or territory has called upon itself, before being consigned to some mass grave in paragraph five. By gliding over the dead, the media are free to discourse on grand strategy, as though war is rational and contained and does something other than spread toxins, hatred and its own ongoing inevitability - and as though "winning" such one-sided, preposterous displays of power actually means something, or is possible.
Whether reporting on Iraq, Afghanistan or Gaza, our media spare us eyewitness accounts of the hell we create in pursuit of our interests, such as Safa Joudeh's live Gaza diary on electronicindifada.com:
"There were piles and piles of bodies in the locations that were hit," she wrote on Dec. 27. "As you looked at them you could see that a few of the young men were still alive, someone lifts a hand, and another raises his head. They probably died within moments because their bodies were burned, most had lost limbs, some of their guts were hanging out and they were all lying in pools of blood.
"Outside my home," she goes on, "which is close to the two largest universities in Gaza, a missile fell on a large group of young men, university students. They'd been warned not to stand in groups as it makes them an easy target, but they were waiting for buses to take them home. Seven were killed, four students and three of our neighbors' kids. . . . Nothing could stop my 14-year-old brother from rushing out to see the bodies of his friends laying in the street after they were killed. He hasn't spoken a word since."
No war, no military action, no act of self-defense or revenge has a legitimacy that exempts the perpetrators from responsibility for the consequences they create. And every bombing campaign - certainly one against the most densely populated region on Earth - will wreak the sort of searing havoc Joudeh describes.
I refuse to believe that any long-term human good will come out of a geopolitical strategy that casually inflicts this sort of suffering on people, and fear for the souls of the complicit parties, especially if they lack the courage to acknowledge what they do without reducing their victims to expendable, subhuman status.
And I cannot read something like the New York Times editorial quoted above without feeling an urgent need to fill the void that it opens. Peace on this planet is possible, but only if we make ourselves bigger than war. This can happen only with the sort of genuine openness to our "enemies" that is documented, for instance, in a Peace Now video of Israeli and Palestinian students engaging in dialogue with one another that I viewed on the organization's Web site.
"It's very easy to dehumanize someone you don't know," a student says at one point, glowing from her realization that we're all in this together. The implications of this simple truth are the only antidote I know of to the suicidal folly of war. On a day in which I have endured too much news from the Middle East, they burst in my heart like a symphony of peace.

Show AllThis continued human condition will end our existence as we know it, tell me, what's it for? Is it for control of humanity, earth, time and space for superiority of wealth and power by a few people who seem to think they have this right at all cost? Is it for a misunderstanding of what god means? I ask all of you, is it time to question the systems that mankind has developed to this point in civilization, because I don't think its working for the people or the planet earth not to mention the Solar system or even the entire universe.
We need something, I don't know exactly what but I do know its not more unnecessary death and suffering at the hands of a few people who have the technology to manipulate everything you think you know and experience in your life as well as how long and what quality of life they will allow you.
I believe Peace, Love and understanding is worth a try, how about you? people, there is power in numbers, together we can change the collective consciousness of humanity and finally know what Love is.

Civilization is now, and has always been, a piece of waxed paper stretched over a volcano. We are living in a time when the volcano is ready to go like Mt. St. Helen's and we are the little community of Spirit Lake nestling in its shadow. Except we've finally run out of waxed paper.
And this is the kind of dangers and possible tragedies Palestinians will keep getting as long as both the Far Right and the Far Left continue to aid and abet bad leadership in Washington and Europe. Furthermore, how do you all like it that your tax dollars are going to rogue regimes such as the neighboring Arab nations rife with corrupt dictators conspiring with the zionists running Israel and bringing danger to others? If you people want to keep making shit excuses for ignoring the fact that it's not just Israel and the US but also EU and the corrupt dictators of the neighboring Arab nations that are to be held accountable, more bad things such as this will continue. And don't give me shit about the need to vote 3rd party. Nothing stops corporate and military interests from infiltrating any party it sees coming to power. You people need to cooperate with folks like myself in fighting these vested interests on local, state, and federal levels or we're all going to keep getting stuck in victim status and watch more tragedies in Gaza and elsewhere.
By the way, no reporting of the terrorist attacks that just took place today in Northeast India. I guess they don't matter do they ?

IMAGINE this :
our civilization is built upon or maintained on the idea of "greed"...wanting more than we really need and if necessary denying others to satisfy it.
and yet --DIFFERENT species know , seemingly, better what is "compassion"....
a young lion was found in a cramped cage, in a basement of harrod's in london (consider that - the "basement" of a "capitalist" symbol of Luxury living - Harrod's) - by 2 men. who bought him , raised him for a year, released him into the wild in africa where he belonged...then visited him to find out if he might remember them, now being the young King of his own Pride...see what happens next:
we should be ashamed of ourselves. ..but especially "leaders of industry" and governance ..one wonders if we are really THAT civilized...

The very worst in the human condition has always found its way to power. Since the very worst includes denial that the status quo is working just fine...it's over.
It’s instructive to look at the Hamas Covenant, to see how amenable Hamas may be to negotiations with Israel and the West. From the Preamble: “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.†From Article 13: “[Peace] initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement ... Those conferences are no more than a means to appoint the infidels as arbitrators in the lands of Islam ... There is no solution for the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are but a waste of time, an exercise in futility.â€
Here's a group looking for peace. NOT!
For your own information, Hamas was nurtured and defended by the same Israeli zionists claiming to be against it. And your tax dollars are going to Hamas sir.

Sure, President Bush, it is up to Hamas to stop fighting first, then perhaps the Israeli masters of colonial Gaza will suddenly shift from decades of oppression to ending their illegal occupation. And the trouble-making inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto should have cooperated with the Nazis. It is the duty of the weak, the poor, the occupied, the imprisoned, the despised to be cooperative; only then will the possibility of equality, freedom, justice be entertained…if and when the powerful find it convenient. If the weak, poor, occupied, imprisoned, despised want even a taste of the treatment their masters take for granted, then they must earn the right by being nice. Getting angry when you are oppressed is not nice; fighting back is not nice; refusing to submit is not nice. Using weapons against your oppressors who ignore you when you are quiescent and subvert you when you play by their rules is not nice. The people of Gaza have no business expecting such luxuries as airports, electricity, a government that can collect taxes, freedom from aerial bombardment, or international trade because Hamas is not nice.

COMMENT:
The American people are oppressed by capitalist usury, and now by the Bush patriot laws. The American people are allowing their government to oppress Iraqis, Afghanis, and others in various Third World countries and aid in the oppression of Palestinians.
It is time for Americans to stop making nice with their government and the establishment the government represents.
I think the Dixie Chicks might understand. Alas, not enough Americans do.
The Hamas position that Israel has no right to existence is radical. The right wing Israeli position that the West Bank is properly theirs--and they continue to take more and more of it--is course not up for discussion.

Here is how the astro-logos views current events. (Any who dislike astrology, please bypass my post. Thank you.)
There is a new moon every 29 days and it owns the power to cast mood. If mood meant nothing to human beings, we would be devoid of emotion; and Hollywood would not spend a fortune on soundtracks. After all, these truly animate the emotions intended for the unfolding of scenes.
Apart from blue moons, one new moon falls in each Zodiac sign in succession, and these in my view bring to life the lesson, or archetypal energy that "dwells" there. A new moon in Capricorn occured on the 27th, and this is the sign of Saturn, which some associate with "Satan." Mainly Saturn represents the power of ambition, the role held by mammon in our world. And this was no ordinary new moon. Mars, the bringer of war entered Capricorn just in time to merge with this new moon "congress," and Pluto, a "planet" with an orbit of 248 years is now just at the very beginning of this sign. Over the course of its 18 year passage through Capricorn, Pluto will tear down world governments and replace them with something else. The process REALLY gets underway from 2010-2015, and since Libra (social justice) and Aries (the rights of the individual) hold planets that will contest against the Pluto-Capricorn mandates (which are taking shape as control of citizens through the powerful ruse of fear, fear of "terrorists" everywhere. Needless to say the fear has bred contempt and in fact led to more activities in a vicious, never-ending it would seem cycle)those years will be extremely tense.
So the new moon blended sun and moon with Mars and Pluto. When I saw this event taking shape I knew that Pluto could either function as a massive call to healing, the only way to defuse the tensions that otherwise propel mob levels of violence. Pluto, ruler of Scorpio, 8th sign and like the number 8, composed of two symbolic "circles" or venues of expression. The lower one is that of pure retaliation, thus cycles of violence feeding perpetually upon themselves. The higher circle is that which is taught by Masters of all faiths: the capacity to forgive, to see self in other, to turn the other cheek, to allow for transformation.
It is incredible that bloodshed is occuring PRECISELY where the world's 3 foremost patriarchal religions began. If this is not a telling sign that religions MUST change what they teach, I don't know what is. This team-like conviction that any one perspective has a monopoly on God or truth is what's tearing the world asunder! And so many seem to want End Times, and indeed are "bringing it on" through divisive hatreds. Even in India, bith place of some marvelously mystical religious understandings, too many in media are following Bush's "force-first" policies of aggression, pre-emptive war, righteousness masking vengeance, by clammoring for NUCLEAR attack against their neighbors.
In many ways all hell HAS broken loose. Instead of focusing on what is calamitous, those of us so-inclined should light a candle and spend time each evening visualizing CALM in these troubles zones. Earth is ONE body, and these places under stress are like pinched nerves all across her (Gaia's) being. A pained planet cannot produce its best harvests on any scale or level. Perhaps the prophecies about 2012 will come to pass, if enough souls do not wake up and recognize the fact we are all connected, these nationalities, racial identities, religions are to our lives what the costumes are to accomplished actors preparing for stage performances.
Practice peace.
Peace

Although astrology is not my thing, I really did enjoy the beautiful sunset sky this past week. With bright Venus, the crescent moon, and Mercury and Jupiter in the southwestern sky. I don't remember such a naked eye view of Mercury in the past. That being said,
I found that your next to last paragraph struck a chord. Why is it that a majority on this planet have forsaken Earth, for the promise of a better after life. We have such a beautiful world to live on and to be a part of. Although the major religions of our world give us prescriptions for harmony, peace, brotherhood, sisterhood, moral standards, and how to live together, they seem to be the cause of so much violence and disharmony.
It is essential that we appreciate what we have in hand and take good care of it. I don't know anyone that has returned from heaven to tell us how good it is.
Interesting, that you mention the media coverage in India. I routinely check out some of their newspapers websites (in fact, several newspapers in Asia - it is an interesting exercise in itself), especially the readers comments. There seem to be a few of these comments that actually support Israeli action - of course, countered immediately by coherent rebuttals from other readers who take a longer view of history. Those who support Israel seem to be under the illusion that anyone attacking a Muslim population must be acting out of self-defense? It's understandable in India because India has suffered terrorist attacks (with active support from Pakistan's intelligence establishment, and long before 9/11), but is also regrettable because Indian leaders such as Nehru and Indira Gandhi have traditionally lent their moral and diplomatic support solidly behind the Palestinian struggle. But, like the yuppie crowd everywhere, the younger population doesn't seem to have the time or the interest for history, and yet, they are so convinced of their world view being right. The Hindu and Frontline seem to be somewhat balanced, though left-leaning, publications.

perhaps we could find some lost time.... maybe time before we started counting

“Anti-Semitism is nothing but the antagonistic attitude produced in the non-Jew by the Jewish group. The Jewish group has thrived on oppression and on the antagonism it has forever met in the world...the root cause is their use of enemies they create in order to keep solidarity.” Albert Einstein
And so it goes, on and on and on, this bombing because the Jew's are being oppressed by the Arab's struggling to exist while being oppressed by the Jew's, mean while the American masters of war stand by itching for their reason to come to the Jew's rescue, while Iran and the Pakistan warlords wait to respond on behalf of the Arab brothers in Gaza, all the while Russia and China sit back and wait, or something like that. WTF! All of this has always been for the approval of God?
If we could channel this kind of energy and money and other resources towards helping each other I think it might catch on, we have to break this pattern, it is part of a plan for control and power, I believe there are people behind this war game that don't care who slaughters who because they have money riding on both sides.
The quote is fraudulent.
The first two sentences in the Einstein "quotation" are separated by a number of paragraphs in the 1938 Collier's article and completely out of context. The last part was not in the article at all and is apparently made up.
When it sounds too "pat" there is usually a reason for it.
This is the question of the hour as there seems to be an influential class of intellectuals right now who are doing all they can to steer the world to the brink of catastrophe. Israel's assault on Gaza seems partly timed to stop any potential shift in US policies in the Middle East, and thus ensuring that Judgment Day remains on course. The expanded use of unmanned Terminator-style hunter-killer drones by both Israel and the US is a good indication of just how immoral they -- and the press and political class that enables them -- have become.
The sadism and, yes, pure evil that minds like that of John Bolton embody, is perplexing and frustrating for those who struggle for peace and feel compassion for all beings. Unfortunately, these neo-con warmongers would probably survive the end of the world, making up the ranks of the cannibalistic bloodcults as depicted in Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or at least serving as their new moloch gods.
REPORTER: "Mr. Gandhi, what do you think of Western civilization?"
GANDHI: "I think it would be a good idea."
Siouxrose____ Good to hear some of your scientific observations again. They make about as much sense as any other opinions we are bombarded with these days regarding the future and what it holds for us. One thing that is certain, this earth has lived with violence ever since it began, and there is no reason to think it will ever stop.
Humans behaviour is mostly determined by supposed "leaders", who generally use violence and war to obtain power for themselves and their cohorts. They become very good at convincing the populace through fear, greed, intimidation, religion, or other methods they are protecting and caring for the common needs.
Peace is a wonderful objective and hopefully, we will see some progress in coming years, but it is unlikely to ever be completely achieved. However, we have no choice but to keep trying to turn our country from warlike nationalism back to peaceful patriotism for the sake of everyone on this planet.
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? ...am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
My god!...what have I done?

"the suicidal folly of war."
COMMENT:
Who is this "we" that is supposed to make peace? We the government or we the citizens? The government has been making war throughout the history of the country and as long as the establishment that the government represents makes money from war, that isn't going to happen.
Unless "we" means the citizens, then, of course we can make peace instead of war, "we" the citizens merely have to take the power away from the establishment, abolish the established government, and make a government that represents the majority instead of the plutocrats that "we" the citizens keep electing as our leaders.
As for "the suicidal folly of war," making huge fortunes from war is hardly considered "folly" by the capitalists who profit from war. And the war the capitalists don't personally have to risk their lives in isn't suicide: it is mass murder for profit.
Nanoo
It isn't just the capitalists who profit from war. Consider the troops and hired guns and all those who work in developing and making weapons. In a sick way, it almost reminds of the ending in the movie "Fargo" when the sheriff says something like, look what you've done for such a little bit of money.
"Israel must defend itself,"......while it continues its taking of the Palestinian lands.
The future of WHAT civilization?
Look at what our species has done to this planet and to other species--not to mention its fierce addiction to killing its OWN species.
We are barbarians, and we need to be talking about the future of BARBARY--hopefully brief.
Samuel Huntington, that pompous shill for racist hatred in the name of "civilizations", is--mercifully--dead.
Let the Israelis bury him.
