The Truth Will Tell
In a few months, it should soon become apparent to all but the lowest knuckle-draggers that Barack Obama is not a terrorist sympathizer, he's not a Muslim, he's not going to take away your guns, he's not a Black Liberation theologist, he's not going to raise taxes on the poor or middle class, he won't surrender in Iraq, he isn't supported by al-Qaeda, he won't play nice with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he isn't a socialist and his health care plan isn't even universal, much less "socialized medicine."
All of these outright lies — which formed the basis of John McCain's run for the presidency — will be easily disproven as events unfold during the Obama administration.
So when the predictive lies don't come true, and the others are exposed as utter nonsense, I'm going to expect an apology from Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and all the other professional liars. They must come before the nation and say, "I'm sorry, I was wrong. And I also lied." Nothing short of a statement like that will atone for the outrageousness of their claims.
Yet, obviously, that won't happen. Limbaugh and his ilk will have moved on to a whole new avalanche of lies. Palin seems to have difficulty making even the most elemental assertion without lying — just the other day, she claimed there was no friction whatsoever between her and McCain's staff, which anyone who can read knows is demonstrably untrue. And she probably thinks — and will think for the rest of her life — that she didn't lie about Obama hard enough. The right-wing still believes they lost because they weren't tough enough on Obama — that the campaign missed many golden opportunities to lie.
Of course, they don't really see it that way. They think the truth about Obama was suppressed by the mainstream media — that no one wrote the full story about his association with William Ayres, that his relationship with Jeremiah Wright wasn't emphasized enough, that his link to Rashid Khalidi was swept under the rug. Of course, because their worldview necessitates it, they are blissfully unaware of the reams of copy written about all of these things. The reason that these weren't daily stories in newspapers and on television was because reporters looked into these matters and concluded there just wasn't much there! Although the right-wingers might think otherwise from watching Fox News, real reporters don't just write things to support a particular point of view. The good ones actually try to find out the truth and report on objective reality.
Many of these people still believe that Obama is dangerous and that his election to president means grave things for the future of America. Never mind that the election of George Bush actually did prove to be a dangerous disaster. They will believe in the goodness of Bush and in the falsehoods about Obama even when it becomes apparent that none of the lies are true.
Some of these right-wing believers aren't fully to blame. They have been misled and brainwashed by an army of conservative blowhards who tell lies, minute by minute, 24/7, on talk radio broadcast in every town in America. This parade of charlatans has poisoned the minds of millions and caused them to believe that the nation has elected a terrorist-sympathizing, socialist baby-killer. Professionals such as Limbaugh may realize, at times, they are lying, that they are engaging in hyperbole, but the listeners often do not. That's why Obama's election, and his performance over the next four years that will disprove all the absurd assertions about him, may actually be a chance for some of these people to wash the scales from their eyes and see how easily they have been played for fools. Well, one can at least hope

Show All"He's not a Muslim." Since when did being a Muslim become a slur? And why has not Barack Obama said this in a public forum?
"He won't surrender in Iraq." Does that then mean that the Iraqis will never get their country back until Obama and the United States says they can? The writer neglected to mention that Obama also feels that the U.S. won't surrender in Afghanistan either even if that means that Obama should direct the United States to keep American forces [illegally] in that country for an indefinite period of time.
Guy Reel ends his essay by stating that "Well, one can at least hope." Unfortunately, it appears that the Afghans and the Iraqis have little reason to hope that their countries will be returned to them when Obama becomes president of the United States in 2009.
We can hope because all indications are Obama is a man of moral consciousness, leastways to a much greater extent than Bush could imagine being.
But you are right about the challenges in Afghanistan and Iraq. Let us hope that "not surrendering" does not exclude finding a more conscientious path to a moral victory for all concerned.
Cosmobilly
Unfortunatley, Obama's "moral consciousness" seems to have deserted him when he voted to reauthorize the USA PATRIOT ACT, when he voted to grant the telecom companies immunity from prosecution, when he voted to bail out Wall Street while neglecting to aid Main Street. As I mentioned to in my other comment, Obama has offered no hope to the Aghans when he advocates escalating the war in Afghanistan by proposing to send more American soldiers to that war-ravaged country.
Obama's moral conscience seems to have been superseded by his political ambitions and his desire to placate the corporate and military elite of this country.
You definately have some points there. But ltets wait and see. This could very well be an advance to the rear tactic. I think (and hope) he may surprise us all.
Move troops to Afganistan, then send them home from there. A net reduction in troops in both countries without any real problems. At least thats what I hope he has in mind. Peatreaus has a non-troop strategy for Afganistan...that won't hurt.
Lets just hope he gets them out soon.....if not, time to raise some hell.

"Barack Obama and Afghanistan
By MARC HEROLD
Obama recognizes that the U.S’s traditional European NATO allies will not provide large numbers of additional fighting forces, hence Obama proposes rotating three divisions or about 10,000 U.S. troops out of Iraq and into Afghanistan.
Our troops and our NATO allies are performing heroically in Afghanistan, but I have argued for years that we lack the resources to finish the job because of our commitment to Iraq. That's what the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said earlier this month. And that's why, as President, I will make the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban the top priority that it should be. This is a war that we have to win…. We need more troops, more helicopters, more satellites, and more Predator drones in the Afghan border region."
He told you in advance what his plans were.
Lobo Gris
I hadn't seen that. But I'm really pinning my hopes on Peatreaus. That isn't his plan. He doesn't believe we need more troops and Obama is smart enough to change with circumstances....I HOPE!
...and there was "hope" that George W. Bush would be a "compassionate conservative". The Ship of Moral Victory never left the dock. It seems that the "scientific Dictatorship" of the global fascists will continue to play us for fools. Obama has shown over and over his propensity to lie and mislead. Enough with delusional projections.
The U.S. will have military bases in Iraq for the foreseeable future. Another Powell doctrine says "you break it, you own it." The U.S. owns Iraq now.
BTW, Powell has publicly admonished the political chattering classes for using Muslim as a slur and came to the defense of Muslims.
There are too many strong factions in Afghanistan. Given the degradation of the environment, poverty, unchecked criminality, a weak central government the drug trade will be an important source of power and money for many Afghan people. The U.S.'s puritanical intolerance to drugs will prevent any meaningful or peaceful resolution to this war for the Afghan people.
The U.S. shadow government lives off the drug trade.
Thank goodness he wont take away our guns, we need to thin the ranks:
An eight-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of his father and another man in the US state of Arizona.
Police in St Johns, a small community north-east of Phoenix, said the child had confessed to shooting the two men with a .22-calibre rifle on Wednesday.
"Who would think an eight-year-old kid could kill two adults?" said St Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick on Friday.
A judge has ordered a psychological evaluation of the boy, who is being held at a juvenile detention centre.
He did not have a record of bad behavior at school, and there had been no indication of any problems at home, prosecutors said.
**now if only the father had been armed himself-then we wouldnt have had such a tragedy!
Gun nuts-gotta love them.
I heard the boy was being abused by his father, now I never condone such actions but one who has seen local goverments refusal to remove children from abusive parents, I can understand how things like this can happen. Guns are not the root cause, find the root cause and make the correction.
As Dale Carnegie said way back in the 30s, nobody ever admits they were wrong or that they lied.
The other night, though, on "The Daily Show," even Chris Wallace from FOX "news" admitted, albeit underhandedly, that the ACORN "story" was all bullshit and that his network does, indeed, lie.
Can't wait for Drudge to break the Obama-sex-with-gay-aborted-stem-cell scandal...
Some of the people mentioned are liars for hire. They will continue to lie, because they are paid to lie.
The author of this article apparently does not understand that just telling the truth does nothing. You can tell as many lies as you want but the reason people generally consider them "acceptable" is the concept of FRAMING them that way. The truth will only be believed when it is framed as acceptable. Otherwise, it goes in one ear and simply comes out the other. The author needs to take some remedial framing 101 lessons from GEORGE LAKOFF.
The title of the article says it all. In the corrupt system where Obama will be serving, he will have to make some very unpopular decisions to serve the rest of us. If he moves to slow or indecisively, things will continue to worsen on all fronts, and the country will continue to crumble. He's got the talk down, now let's see if he walks the walk. Tax the rich, end the wars, reduce the military, curtail outsourcing, build and repair the infrastructure, bring sensible regulation to the banking industry, to name a few. Many in the halls of power will resist, and his chief of staff may be first and foremost among them. When all is said and done 'truth' may force Obama to be more progressive than he is inclined to be, and require him to 'slice and dice' in ways he cannot now imagine.

"He doesn't believe we need more troops and Obama is smart enough to change with circumstances....I HOPE!"
We'll see of course but I do know that Obama has reiterated that same stance on Afghanistan as recently as October.
Lobo Gris
I've got my fingers crossed.
