Peace Activist Cindy Sheehan Seeks to Unseat Nancy Pelosi for Betraying the Constitution
Imagine what would happen if the nations
of the world spent as much on development as on building machines of
war. Imagine a world where every human being would live in freedom and
dignity. Imagine a world in which we would shed the same tears when a
child dies in Darfur or Vancouver. Imagine a world where we would
settle our differences through diplomacy and dialogue and not through
bombs or bullets. Imagine if the only nuclear weapons remaining were
the relics in our museums. Imagine the legacy we could leave to our
children. Imagine that such a world is within our grasp.
- Mohamed ElBaradei (2005), Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
Garnering national attention, peace activist Cindy Sheehan is now running for office against incumbent Democrat Nancy Pelosi in California's 8th Congressional district. Cindy promised the House Speaker that if impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush did not start when Pelosi took control of the House last year, she would run against her in the next election.
I spent some time with Cindy earlier this month. As I waited for her arrival, a trickle of volunteers soon became a flood as everyone crowded into Cindy's election headquarters. The election office, a large room with vaulted ceilings and unmatched furniture is splattered with homemade banners, assorted publications, and a map large enough to almost cover one entire wall showing every address in the district. Most definitely a grassroots campaign, Cindy's volunteers have all the makings of a well-oiled election machine. It was the organized work of her passionate supporters that helped Cindy earn a place on the District ballot, a place she needed over 10,000 signatures to secure. She is the first independent candidate to qualify for the California ballot since 1996.
I could not help but wonder how Cindy finds the strength and courage to continue her fight for peace and justice after the death of her son Casey in Iraq. When I asked her, she said without hesitation, "I can not bear the thought of innocent people being killed, occupied, or oppressed because of the actions of my government." As for her strength, she says "The worst possible thing that could happen to me as a human being has already happened - Casey's death, nothing even touches that part of my life." Cindy went on, "I have to make up for...years of apathy. [I wanted to call] the title of my book From Apathy to Activism, but my publisher would not let me."
Her comment left me pondering the events of 9/11 and how people around the world view Americans. "I travel all over the world and everywhere I go the people I talk to are profoundly upset with the American people," she says. "They don't understand why we are not acting." I have often wondered the same thing myself and I, too, fear the future repercussions of inaction.
"She betrayed her Democratic base"
Cindy says she made the decision to run for office because "Not only has [Nancy Pelosi] betrayed her Democratic base, but she has betrayed the Constitution and she has betrayed the country." Many critics of House Speaker Pelosi have said that when she took impeachment off the table, she took democracy off the table. "She has taken away our right to privacy, she has betrayed the Fourth Amendment by giving George Bush and the telecom company's immunity, she continues to fund both wars...she went in saying ‘no blank checks' and every single time she has given [Bush] a blank check. Instead of taking her power as Speaker and her power in the House of Representatives and cutting off funding, she has continued to fund the war. She has violated her constitutional oath to protect and defend the constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic."
But some Democrats fear the loss of Pelosi as House Leader, not matter how much they may appreciate Cindy's staunch anti-war stance. Cindy defends her decision to run because she believes that in a healthy democracy, "we need more voices, not less... we don't really even have two parties. I have seen how vibrant multi-party democracies are around the globe. Some countries have anywhere from 12-20 parties. These systems really allow individuals to obtain representation that truly supports their views."
Cindy's anti-war stance is consistent, and she is quick to apply this standard to all candidates, regardless of party affiliation. John McCain has made his intention clear to keep troops in Iraq for "one hundred years" if he deems it necessary, while Barack Obama has sworn to "wage the war that has to be won." Both candidates have stated they would continue the use of military force in Afghanistan and would consider taking military action against Iran.
"Any candidate I support will have to be against war and using war as an instrument for foreign policy." But recognizing the need to differentiate individual members of the two-party system from party leadership, Cindy says that many on both sides of the aisle have remained steadfast in their anti-war positions. "I see a real disconnect between grass-root Democrats and Republicans from their leadership." Citing the example of Nancy Pelosi Cindy says, "this district voted almost two-thirds to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney in 2006, and our representative (Nancy Pelosi) did nothing about it."
For many Americans like Cindy, third-party candidates have come to represent a viable alternative to the current system, yet they face numerous challenges to secure the ballot access needed to compete for electoral votes. Ballot access laws vary from state to state and there are no federal laws to oversee all states, creating a difficult system where the only two parties represented for the 2008 election in all 50 states are the Democratic and Republican parties. Some consider third-party candidates "spoilers" to the election process. Ralph Nader's role in the 2000 presidential election has been a source of controversy and many in the Democratic Party blame him for splitting the Democratic vote.
As both viable candidates have moved to the right on many issues, Americans are registering as Independents in record numbers. "I know that Ralph Nader is running a very aggressive campaign to pull Obama to the Left; I don't see that happening. I think the role of third parties is to give people a choice in the elective process. I would like to pull supporters of Nader, Cynthia McKinney, and Ron Paul in order to create energy around a third party that is really viable and credible. One that would have a chance against the two monopoly parties we have now." Cindy says she'll vote for Cynthia McKinney on November 4th.
Corporate Influence & Media Complicity
Like many Americans, Cindy sees corporate influence as a destructive force and one that is actively changing the political landscape. According to OpenSecrets.org, campaign spending and fundraising have skyrocketed in the past thirty years, especially when the presidency is at stake. During the 1976 presidential election between Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, contributions totaled a mere $171 million. Today, the amount of money raised and spent is a staggering $961 million. Donations from special interest groups make their way to politicians through PAC's (Political Action Committees), allowing lawmakers to hide their affiliation with leadership PACs. The result is an environment where politicians no longer support their constituents and act instead in the interest of corporate wealth. "These committees have been able to slip under the radar for years," she says.
According to Cindy, this influence has far-reaching implications for the American voter, including the information voters hear from mainstream media sources. "Most mainstream media outlets are just mouthpieces for the status quo and so entrenched in that paradigm that new ideas or exchanges of ideas are lost in sound bites and talking points...The media in this country is complicit in the war effort and have become the propaganda arm of the United States Government."
Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that the FCC is currently investigating allegations that the "Pentagon recruited and, in effect, trained nearly two dozen retired military officers to promote the Bush administration's war policies in the news media." The New York Times recently showed the link between media commentators and powerful military contractors, "Most of the analysts have ties to military contractors vested in the very war policies they are asked to assess on air." As Cindy notes, it's not only the American people that the Bush Administration attempts to propagandize. Senator Jim Webb called for a halt to a $300 million dollar program to produce pro-American news in Iraq. Cindy says this shows how "war profiteers own the media so they are not going to give us the truth about what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan."
Regardless of efforts made by the Bush Administration and the Pentagon to create positive messages about their military strategy, the most recent National Intelligence Estimate concludes al Qaeda has reached "pre-9/11 strength," and cites, "the rejuvenating effect the Iraq War has had on al Qaeda" for its ability to carry out terrorist attacks. When I asked Cindy to comment on the use of violence as a means to solve problems, she paused for a brief moment before noting, "I am not naïve enough to believe that there may not ever be a situation where we won't have to defend ourselves, that we don't need a military at all, but I think out military should only be used to defend our safety and in case of natural disasters."
"It seems to me to be common sense that the killing of innocent people is going to upset their families, their neighbors, and their communities. So, if you go to Iraq and kill over a million people, you are not only inflaming that country, you're inflaming the entire Arab world...People who would never dream of resorting to violence in that part of the world feel compelled to - first of all to defend themselves and secondly to reap some kind of vengeance. I am not saying that it is right; I think that solving problems with violence is wrong...but my son was killed, not by a terrorist, [but] by a resident of Sadr City that saw Casey as an occupier. Occupied people have reasons to resist occupation and I believe they have a fundamental and moral right to do so."
Cindy sighs before completing her thought. "If our children and weaponry were not so readily available it would force our government to look to solve problems in a way that does not kill innocent people."

Show AllThank goodness, a positive article about a real progressive candidate! I'm pleasantly surprised that SF voters aren't being encouraged to cast a 'pragmatic' vote for Pelosi.
Kudos, CommonDreams! Now let's see the presidential arena ones.
Oakknot
If I lived in her district, I would be voting for her, and cajoling everyone around me to do the same. Go Cindy Go!!!
Now, THIS is change I can believe in!
♥ Go, Cindy! ♥
Speaking of the angel...did our pleas get through, or is this just a happy coincidence?
Why should any Dems fear losing Pelosi as speaker? She's been ineffective, a huge disappointment, and it's not like a Republican's gonna get the job. This seems like one a 3rd party can win, running on a progressive platform in a very progressive district. One step at a time...
"Why should any Dems fear losing Pelosi as speaker?"
I'd guess it is because she "knows where the bodies are buried" if you know what I mean.
Yeah, I'd forgotten about that...
I was actually referring to Dem voters, but you've got a point as to why the party machine would try to steer them away from Sheehan.
I've been making some calls from Kansas to the San Francisco district for Cindy's campaign. It is indeed a worthy cause. Does anyone know about any polls concerning Cindy's situation?
Sheehan is a human. It is *PEOPLE* such as Cindy to whom I direct my "hope".
Most of those who are part of "The Party" machine... get nothing but disdain. If you want representation for humans over corporations, support human beings who support you.
Pelosi is one of the foremost examples of failed leadership that "The Party" has ever produced. Yes, there are many "Democrats" who support her... and as she has so often openly and without any real reservation supported the criminal acts of Republicans and her corporatist masters...there are many "Republicans" who support her as well. They are inseparable. Those within "The Party" are so close in nature as to be one in the same. The difference is in name only.
Bring our troops home now! End empire building! Vote for Sheehan!
"Pelosi is one of the foremost examples of failed leadership"
You'd have to start to lead before you could fail. She never started.
I would vote for Cindy in a heartbeat if I lived in her district. In fact I would vote for anyone who has the guts to stand up against this stupid unending war that has taken the lives of so many of our troops, maimed many more and killed countless Iraqis and left millions homeless, plus left a country devastated beyond repair. I don't care that the war machinery industry is the backbone of what little manufacturing economy we have left. It is time to stop using the bulk of our taxpayer dollars in trying to rule the world. It is time to retool our manufacturing facilities into production of products for a fossil fuel free economy. Best Wishes for Cindy on her campaign.
I would vote for Cindy Sheehan if I lived in her district. And I already have voted for Obama and am happy about it.
Nancy Pelosi needs to be out of the picture as she is a Neocon.
She does not want Bush to be held accountable for any of his crimes.
Nancy Pelosi = Neocon Bush supporter, Bush protecter and war profiteer
Good luck, Cindy! If I lived in CA I'd definitely vote for you.
Pelosi can't hold Bu$h accountabe for any of his crimes. Why? Because she is complicit. If she started impeachment proceedings against Bu$h and gang, she would be putting her own neck in the noose.
Cindy, I wish I were in a position to vote for you! Since I'm not however, I wish you the very best of luck!!! Go for it, you can win:-)
In 2004, many of us criticized John Kerry because he talked about leaving Iraq in 6 months while we called for immediate withdrawal.
Four years later, with Democrats now in control of the Congress, just how far has the Democratic Party moved to the right?
Democrats, time after time after time have voted to continue funding Bush's war in Iraq. And what's Obama's timeline now?
Four years later, Democrats in control, and we're still getting wiggle words from Obama and the Democrats about leaving Iraq.
Ms. Sheehan doesn't play games when war is involved. She did the right thing by leaving a party that refused to do all they could to end the war. Her "friends" on the Progressive Democrats of America Board of Directors, the "really, really liberal" Democrats, stabbed her in the back.
I grew up in SF during the 50s and 60s. Although there has always been a highly visible left-leaning constituency in the 8th district, you have an extremely wealthy right wing constituency, including the likes of Bechtel.
The old saying goes:
Directions for getting a job in the Kennedy Administration - Go to Harvard and turn left.
Directions for getting a job in the Reagan Administration - Go to Bechtel and turn right.
From the very first article about Cindy Shehan, I have admired her. She is always straight, truthful, and doesn't lose her focus. Cindy is the kind of person we need to support, with our votes, with our money. She encourages us to believe in ourselves and our ideals. She has shown that it's good to voice opposition at the ballot box. Where else can we collectively do that?
Let's send a strong message to the empire that there are millions of us out here who refuse to go along with the brutality any longer.
I've been watching - for over 20 years now - the Democratic Party sink lower and lower. Why is this?
The One-Party has designed a system that is win-win for the corporations and lose-lose for the people. It's time to ignore their scam and VOTE YOUR CONSCIENCE!
Nader, 08 is a very good choice, indeed.
Cindy....you go girl!
Like Cindy, real patriots defend the Constitution.
Cindy Sheehan deserves to be speaker of the house. Even if she doesn't win this year, Obama should still allow her a cabinet position and let her have her say. Put her in as Secretary of Defense and watch her fight to cut down wasteful military spending.
Terrance Mitchell

Obama is talking about keeping Bush administration people. Wake up.
Maybe the Dems fear Cindy because she would support the prosecution of Bush. That would show that the Congress was complicit. Only the Congress can declare and/or finance war.
Vote Cindy
Vote Nader
Vote Peace
I wish I was in SF and could vote for Cindy, too. She has never wavered from her strong positions. She's a force to be reckoned with, and she SHOULD take the place of the despicable Pelosi.
Pelosi is a corporate, whore that needs to be taken down by real patriots. I would love to see Cindy take her down!
Me too. And I wonder how much Pelosi is protecting her own self from the cascade of prosecutions that would result from actually holding Bush criminals accountable, given her foreknowledge of the tortures, and who knows what else.
And on the subject of prosecuting Bush - here is a link to the Vermont candidate for attorney general who promises to prosecute Bush if elected. (The site takes PayPal, hint hint.)

Wow, really outstanding article by Matt Gonzales, thanks for the link! I'll repeat it:

Cindy Sheehan is my hero. I wish I could vote in her district too. For those who still wish they could help, there's always money:
http://www.cindyforcongress.org/
Cindy is the real thing and she's one of us. Our current leaders including Nancy Pelosi couldn't care less about the american people. We wanted out of Iraq, we elected a democratic congress and what did she do- gave Bush all the money he wanted to continue the war. She took impeachment off the table. If she were Queen she might be able to do this, but not an elected official. Pelosi is a major disappoinment. Also, what did she know about the Bush adminstration and torture and when did she know it? That is a big question. Like another poster said, San Francisco is not as progressive or liberal as it might appear.
I think Cindy's election would break the ice on a revolution of change that is so badly need in the United States.
I pray that Cindy wins daily. What a step in the right direction that would be! I also pray that someday, in some future election, the sheeple wake up and vote for someone like Kucinich for President (I know, ain't gonna happen). Just like Sheehan, that is one man I steadfastly admire. He is the personification of a true patriot - defending the Constitution with all his guts, standing up for the rights of the people and not the Corporations, refusing to back down on his principals no matter how loudly the Demoncrats and Rethuglicans ridicule and outright dismiss him.
Sheehan and Kucinich - both patriots of the finest calibre.
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
Sinclair Lewis, "It Cant Happen Here", 1935
Here's all that I can find to gauge Cindy Sheehan's chances. http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/ ---October 27.
"SAN FRANCISCO - In the most liberal neighbourhood of America's most liberal city, it's possible to walk for blocks without seeing a single campaign sign declaring support for Barack Obama.
But those 'Cindy Sheehan For Congress' posters? They are displayed in the windows of bohemian coffee shops and Hispanic diners throughout the Mission District, a community that's long been an incubator for leftist politics, and a place where the 2008 presidential election has sometimes been less interesting than the congressional battle being waged in their own backyard.
Here in California's 8th District, the most powerful Democrat in Congress, Nancy Pelosi, is facing a spirited - though likely doomed - challenge from Sheehan, the 51-year-old anti-war activist best known for her five-week vigil outside the Texas ranch of President George W. Bush in 2005."
From what I read here, Pelosi is likely to win, although I would be frightened away from placing 10:1 odds on Pelosi. I see too much of a complete wild card factor here. I see a huge, effective grass roots mobilization with a well-funded campaign, and it could possibly swamp incumbent Pelosi.
Support Cindy Sheehan for Congress and Cynthia McKinney for president!

If you believe in her message send her a few bucks. I did, twice.
Ditto.
Joe
best of luck cindy.... hope to see more articles about congressional 3rd party candidates in the future.
...peace...
yes, good luck Cindy, and thanks Common Dreams.
Pelosi & the rest of the Democrats who have not co-sponsored the 3 Impeachment resolutions sitting in the Judiciary Committee & demanded hearings & betrayed "We The People" & our Constitution - all must be held accountable. San Francisco is just the beginning...
*
An Indendent candidate in Texas needs about 75,000 signatures by mid-May to get on the ballot in Texas - so Austinites will not get to see the truly democratic Green Party candidate - Scott Trimble - who would have run against Doggett. Texans will have to write in Independent candidates "Ralph Nader / Matt Gonzalez" or Green party candidates "Cynthia McKinney / Rosa Clemente" if they want to do a progressive protest vote - which is a very smart thing to do, given that Texas is a solid red/conservative state (with no chance of going to Obama.) Texas' ballot access law is a travesty & needs to be challenged in court; then Rep. Lamar Smith (who voted for Clinton's impeachment) needs to be voted out of office & Rep. Doggett - who has not even entertained the notion of signing on to any of the 3 Impeachment resolutions sitting in the Judiciary Committee - needs a serious challenge.

AUSTINITES HAVE NOT BEEN REPRESENTED IN CONGRESS ON IMPEACHMENT
Democracy for 25 conducted an informal survey in Austin and San Marcos between April and September of 2008, asking 100 residents their opinions on Iraq, Iran, their representation in Congress, and impeachment of the President and Vice President.
A CLEAR MAJORITY FAVORS IMPEACHMENT
61% of those surveyed believe the House should impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney. 68% of District 25 constituents surveyed think the House should impeach Vice President Cheney, and 66% of them think that President Bush should also be impeached. 56% would be more likely to support Representative Doggett this year if he supported impeachment of Bush and/or Cheney. Of those who were not district 25 constituents, or who were not sure in which district they reside, 56% favor impeaching President Bush, 54% favor impeaching Vice President Cheney, and 44% would be more likely to support their representative if he or she supported impeachment.
DOGGETT SUPPORTERS OVERWHELMINGLY FAVOR IMPEACHMENT
82% of those surveyed who voted for Representative Doggett in 2006 think that both Bush and Cheney should be impeached, while 53% of those who voted for someone else, didn’t vote, or chose not to say who they voted for in 2006 support the impeachment of both Bush and Cheney.
71% of 2006 Representative Doggett supporters said they would be more likely to vote for him in 2008 if he supported impeachment, while only 18% said impeachment would not be factor into their decision, and only 7% said support for impeachment would make them less likely to support Doggett.
Of those who voted against Representative Doggett in 2006, did not vote, live in a different district, or chose not to say, 43% said that supporting impeachment would make them more likely to support their district’s incumbent, 51% of them either said it would not be a factor or were undecided, and only 4% said it would make them less likely to do so.
~
Of those surveyed, those who identified themselves with the Green Party or Libertarian Party were most likely to support impeachment of Vice President Cheney (82%) or President Bush (76%). 57% of Democrats supported impeachment of both Bush and Cheney, compared to only 25% of Republicans. Half (50%) of all Democrats surveyed said that supporting impeachment would make them more likely to support their district’s representative, whereas 65% of Greens and Libertarians would be more likely to do so.
None of those surveyed said they would be less likely to support their representative if their representative supported impeachment.

What happened to my previous posts on this thread?
Cindy, if you are reading this: I love you so much! Thank you so much for running for Congress!!! Thank you for your message of peace!! Your candidacy brightens my days as I am quite depressed that otherwise rational human beings are voting for pro-war Barack Obama. If you don't win, I'll take a bit of solace that many people voted outside the one-party system in your district! (Maybe I'll run for office again in 2010)
Bring America Back !!!!
****Yes !! You Go, Cindy !!!! Give it your best shot !! Pelosi has proven
she is unfit to be Speaker, and unqualified to be a Democrat Representative.
I vote for Cindy Sheehan even though I am not in California.
****California has a Recall Procedure for Governor==that's how Arnold the
Terminator got in Office, when CA Voters recalled the sitting governor!!
Does California have a similar Recall Procedure for Congressional Reps????
**If so, Cindy, in addition to unseating Pelosi in the election, please do
start a Recall Procedure to remove her from California politics altogether !!
ELECT SHEEHAN========UNSEAT & RECALL PELOSI !!!!
I will be so disappointed if Cindy Sheehan does not win.
I have posted many times my disappointment that average Americans do not use their freedom to vote to affect real change, as well as my frustration for not understanding why. In this case you have a person, Nancy Pelosi, who has obviously completely failed the American people. Anyone who does not realize that the election of 2006 was all about ending the war and impeaching Bush is totally out of touch, and in both causes Nancy Pelosi has refused to perform her duty.
Of course I will be elated if Cindy wins. I regret not living in San Francisco, and as a consequence I cannot vote for her. Yet, I fear that Cindy Sheehan will not win. Why? For the same reason that I have been posting regularly why average Americans cannot bring themselves to vote outside the two party system. It’s a mental block that I simply do not understand. It’s a mental block that only guarantees that real change in this country will never occur.
If Nancy Pelosi gets unseated, just think about the great benefit that that would do to this country. To unseat a neocon is disguise, a person who has probably done more damage to this country than any other Democrat by her support of America’s criminal war policy and the president who is responsible for it, now that is an accomplishment. To unseat her would be such a good thing for all of us. Please people of San Francisco, do not lose site of your moral responsibility in this matter. Please think about your children and your grandchildren who in future criminal wars will die as a result of your inability to put a tick mark next to the proper name on a voting ballot. Indeed, if you fail to do that, if you fail to vote for Cindy Sheehan at this time, then I believe you deserve to have your children killed in another war, and I hope when they die that you will realize that it was you who played a part in their deaths. You will deserve it.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Just vote for Cindy Sheehan. Even if you are afraid to do so, vote for her anyway. Even if you think she is totally incompetent to do the job, vote for her anyway. Regardless of what Cindy Sheehan does or fails to do during her term, just the fact she unseats Nancy Pelosi is ample reason to vote for her. Think about your children that you want to protect. Think about children all across this country. They are all depending on you. Forget about all your beliefs about the two party system. No harm will come to the country. Indeed, you will be doing your country the greatest service imaginable.
Don’t let us down.
But of course, there is no reason to fear that she will be incompetent in any way. Contrary to the Democrat's attempts to slander her as a flighty suburban housewife, She is running on a solid, sophisticated, uncompromisingly progressive platform. Just visit her website.
And as far as I'm concerned, the US congress is only ligitimate to the extent thst it is representative of ordinary USAns, including former housewives. If Congress looked like the USA, only one or two members would be as rich as Pelosi.
I’m happy to hear your positive assessment of Cindy’s campaign. I hope I did not negatively affect her outcome by suggesting that there might be any reason to think that she was incompetent. But of course in any election you can always find a few people who think that way about anyone. I just wanted to express my hope that even those who feel that way should still vote for her. If everyone in San Francisco felt the way I do, she'd get 100% of the vote.
I actually feel that Cindy will make an excellent Member of Congress for her district, and I predict that she will have a major positive effect on national politics as well.
It is dismaying to hear that Cindy doesn't have this race in her pocket. It tells me all I need to know about the concerns and allegiances of the wealthy urban liberal class that dominate the "fashionable" neighborhoods of Pelosi's San Francisco district.
Aside from going to symphonies and opera, can someoone explain how these Democrats are diffferent from Republicans?
Actually, I am amazed to you don't notice the big difference between the two races! In the case of Sheehan, there is no Republican running against Pelosi, so Sheehan cannot possibly be a "spoiler".
But guess what? The Democrats are attacking her anyway!
Just like they practically attack, through refusal to provide fundraising resources, members of their own party who take genuinely progressive positions.
And this is the similarity.
It goes way beyond Obama. The whole Democratic Party is an enemy of progress - but like a spy or traitor, are much more vile, because they claim to be sometihng else!
Ah, I see with this comment: "...there is no Republican running against Pelosi, so Sheehan cannot possibly be a "spoiler"." So anybody not a Repug or Demog is "spoiler". Well guess what? Surprise! If McCain loses then Obama is the spoiler for him. No? When people, no matter of what party, run for office, that is DEMOCRACY, not them being a spoiler. No wonder we are stuck in the duopoly cesspool.
Well said.

Vote for Cindy. She really is a very courageous person. She also gives me hope on the darkest of days. Who among us can say that we have given our all to the struggle for peace and justice? To go up against those greedy, evil warmongers in DC! Cindy is my hero!! Send her $$ right NOW because she really needs the help with campaign resources.
First, let me mention that I received a personally signed campaign letter from Ms. Sheehan yesterday, and feel very thankful that she exhibits such grassroots decency and courtesy. Thanks- Ms. Sheehan, for your letter, and my best wishes for your efforts. I cannot sufficiently emphasize the importance of getting her, and many more like her, into the United States Congress and Senate.
Literally, the survival of human civilization depends on this nation's ability to break out of the tiresome, deadly and destructive Duopoly that is corrupt to the core, and in which the D and R labels are simply that- utterly false and disingenuous labels.
For the longest time- breaking the Duopoly (or Oiligarchy, or Plutocracy- pick your favorite poison) has been impossible. The neo-Fascist machinery is firmly in place to inhibit the growth of any genuine democratic dissent, let alone representation, in this false excuse for a "democratic" nation. The political clowns and rogues that run the show are deeply marinated in corporate funds, answer to the likes of GE, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Halliburton, ExxonMobil, and of course, the most deviant and loathsome of them all- Rupert Murdoch. And this list does not even include the various special-interest lobbies- foremost, of course, being AIPAC and its various allies. So vile and corrupt is this setup that even otherwise decent and honorable individuals (such as a Dennis Kucinich, a Russ Feingold, or a Paul Wellstone) are either rendered impotent, or in some cases, drawn into the whirlpool of corruption by the radioactive contagion of the system.
Despite the resilient efforts of a social activist such as Ralph Nader (one needs also mention here how such leading intellectuals as Noam Chomsky are systematically marginalized or ignored in the Fascist Duopoly; for slightly lesser campaigners, such as Norman Finkelstein, or a Ward Churchill, the price of intelligence and clarity is even much stiffer)- the status quo in this dysfunctional system is firmly in place. A major movement, comparable to the Civil Rights campaigns of the '60s, or the Women's Suffrage campaigns of the late 1800s- is absolutely essential to move this country towards a fair, race-blind, non-xenophobic, and just plain humane and progressive future.
A friend recently pointed out to me that the continuing emphasis on "voting for the lesser evil" is simply a vote to continue the status quo. I do agree, though, that the criminal Bushco regime's manipulated ascent to power in 2000 has led to irreparable damage to the world- including, foremost, the genocide of at least one million human beings at the hands of remorseless, accountability-free war criminals.
Yet, in retrospect, if there is a vital lesson to be learned from Nader's campaigns- it is the relative indistinguishability of the Ds and the Rs, and that both are vicious war-mongers, where so-called "hawks" (actual cowards and ignorant opportunists to the last one) simply browbeat and shout out the few "doves" (wise and actually Jesus-like human beings).
As my friend correctly points out- one mechanism by which this hopeless and destructive stalemate can be changed, albeit slowly- is to provide great public support and funds to non-Duopoly candidates for the U.S. Congress, such as Ms. Sheehan. In my past 28 years in the U.S.- I have seen no more than perhaps half-a-dozen "Independents" in the U.S. Legislature. This is beyond pathetic. One Bernie Sanders cannot be expected to do much at all (it is to his credit that regardless of this fact, he often does get noticed and is heard giving voice to the people and their concerns).
Corrupt and beholden politicians such as Nancy Pelosi and Diane Feinstein must be removed and replaced by peace-loving, humanitarian and uncorrupted representatives such as Cindy Sheehan, in increasing numbers.
Voters of San Francisco- an exceptional, iconoclastic, and proudly Liberal city within the otherwise narrow and bigoted backwaters that abound in vast pockets in this country- please vote in large numbers to oust the repulsive, traitorous "Impeachment is off the Table" enabler (Pelosi)- who has shamelessly offered support and shelter to a murderous, soulless regime of neocons and mafioso con-men (and women- look at Michele Bachman). PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING AND SEND CINDY SHEEHAN TO THE CONGRESS, and begin the much-needed national atonement for the needless and obscene killing of her son, and hundreds of thousands of others.
I am hopeful about Cindy's campaign...first, if she wins it will show that some common sense has been restored to the American people and "Progressive Candidates" really do represent the majority, second, it will give her some leverage to do something and third, she will not sell out her values to further her political career...
If anyone thinks Cindy Sheehan enjoys getting the abuse ALL sides have heaped up on her, you must be nuts. My brother is active US Army, and he signed up to DEFEND AMERICA, not kill or be killed for a massive transfer of wealth to Haliburton, Blackwater and other Bush crony war profiteers. It is the fact that Cindy's son died in an illegal and immoral war, sold to the U.S. public through a series of lies and scare tactics that keeps her fighting to prevent other families from losing loved ones in service of the corrupt bunch we have in power now. And Pelosi has been collaborating with Bush all along, she must be voted out.
Cindy is aiming for real solutions, not sell-out collaborations with the people who would loot our economy, and soil our constitution, like Bush and his enabler Pelosi.
PLEASE VOTE FOR CINDY!
