Be A Poll Worker and Save American Democracy
We are constantly being asked: "What can we do to stop the 2008 election from being stolen?"
Because we broke many of the major stories surrounding the theft of the 2004 election in Ohio (and because after four years it is abundantly clear that election most definitely was stolen) the flow of inquiries is heartfelt and non-stop. We cannot afford to have this happen again on November 4.
There is a simple answer for what you can do: be a poll worker.
There are additional options: be a poll judge, a poll observer, a member of a video the vote team, a voter registration researcher and assistant, an organizer for a post-election public hearing, and more.
This weekend (September 26-8) we are co-convening a national conference in Columbus to review these options. The core of the information will be available in print and video via www.freepress.org. Over the next few days we will follow this article with more detailed descriptions of what every citizen can do on November 4 to restore the democratic process to this nation. We are also coordinating with Poll Workers for Democracy whose web site contains much valuable information (http://act.credoaction.com/pollworkers/index.html).
Lets start with the poll working:
It is our goal to have at least one non-partisan poll worker who is committed to protecting the vote in every precinct in America. In many states this is a paying position ($120 for the day in Ohio). It is a very long day. It may also require advance training from the board of elections, but in Ohio such sessions are also paid.
Throughout the US boards of elections are desperate for poll workers. The average age has been creeping up over the past decades, and in many instances there are critical shortages. You should not have trouble finding a position.
We have significant testimony from poll workers who saved literally hundreds of votes in 2004 in such simple ways as splitting long lines that were misdirected to wrong precinct stations, or making sure the doors stayed open, as legally required, for those who were still waiting to cast a ballot at closing time. There is much more, including the simple act of making sure voters who want them get paper ballots.
Overall, the power of even a single poll worker inside a polling station who is committed to democracy can be immense. Above all, do not throw up your hands and say "there's nothing I can do" when these positions are crying out to be filled.
Poll judgeships can be harder to obtain. But poll judges can have significant impact on guaranteeing a fair vote count. This position could be essential in gaining whatever monitoring powers there may be over electronic voting machines whose source code and vote count will be hidden from the pubic.
In Ohio, election protection attorneys (including co-author Fitrakis) have won observer status for representatives of the Green, Libertarian and Nader campaigns. This means independent observers can join Democrats and Republicans in closely monitoring the vote from inside the polls.
We also urge citizens to join the Video the Vote teams that will be going to thousands of polling stations. We hope to see at least one video crew present at every precinct in the country.
The bare but vital footage that was shot at besieged inner city precincts in central Ohio 2004 has stood as a vital beacon to show the tip of how thousands of voters were deliberately disenfranchised. This time, we need saturation coverage to protect against and document every possible violation of our rights as citizens.
Meanwhile, millions of Americans who think they are registered to vote may not be. This is due to a concerted campaign to cage and purge voter rolls. A wide range of technicalities are being used to eliminate countless citizens from the lists of those who are entitled to a ballot but who will be denied one unless steps are taken.
In the lead-up to November 4, be sure to check your own voting status. And volunteer to work with those who may believe their voting status is secure, but who in fact have been targeted for disenfranchisement.
Remember that the US Supreme Court has approved an Indiana law requiring photo ID to vote. This backdoor poll tax will be used to eliminate millions of voters this year unless a concerted effort is made to organize these citizens and get them the necessary papers. It can---must---be done.
But it will take people like you to do it.
Likewise, we must be prepared to conduct public hearings after the election to document violations. After the elections of 2004, the FreePress.org election protection team took testimony from about a thousand Ohio citizens who were denied their right to vote or suffered other attacks during the balloting process. These witnesses were sworn in under legal statute so their testimony could be used in ensuing lawsuits. Such documents have been essential in the on-going King-Lincoln lawsuit.
There are many other things citizens dedicated to restoring American democracy can do before, during and after November 4.
Above all, there is no excuse for throwing up one's hands and saying "there is nothing I can do."
Never was that admission of avoidance more untrue. And never has it been more potentially lethal.
In the coming days, we will present the details from our conference in print and video at www.freepress.org.
If you need further incentive, look back on what has happened to our country these past eight years.
To save American democracy, focus what you can do, pick something and DO IT! The planet you save will be your own.

Show AllAGAIN people are asked to help and it gets very FEW postings. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?????
I ASKED SEVERAL TIMES IF YOU ARE AGAINST THE BAIL OUT OR SOME OTHER THING JUST PICK UP THE PHONE AND TELL THE PERSON ELECTED YOU DON'T WANT THEM TO SUPPORT IT OR YOU DON'T SUPPORT THEM. Even use a pay phone if you don't like call display
I like how Canada does it. There is a representative from each party at each polling station. So no one party runs the show. Plus it is on paper. Each station has a locked box that is viewed by all parties BEFORE the polls open to show it is empty then it is locked. You walk in show ID and your name is crossed off a list of regitered voters by two different people at the desk. They hand you a paper and you go to a cardboard surround on a desk and vote. A very simple paper that list all the people and party who you can vote for in that area and a circle beside each. You put a X in the circle walk the few feet and hand it to the person at the polling desk. YOU WATCH as it is put in the locked box and you have just voted. Number of names crossed off the list has to equal the number of votes in the box simple as that. They are them counted with the witness of all parties present.
I m 53 and have always appreciate being able to vote. I inquired about working in my local polls 12 years ago. I have been working every election day since that time. in Maryland where I work we take great pride in making sure every voter gets to come in and vote. The big problem that we have and I tell friends and folks that you need to check with you local election board if you have not voted in the last 2 major elections. Your name then goes on an inactive list. The other issue is when your moving a short distance and you end up in a different polling district. You can vote with a paper ballot or go to you new district and vote. As well I remember alot of folks that come into vote. I had an elderly man in 2004 who didnt select his candidate and jumped to the end and hit "cast ballot." In 2006 I advised him if he wasnt sure of his selection to call one of us before selecting "Cast Ballot" which he did, and he cast his selection in 2006. The down side is the days are long and polling stations are getting busier, which I like. Get out and vote!!
I thought about being a poll worker, but decided to be partisan so instead I'm the Democratic Precinct Chairman for my campus. If anyone tries voter suppression shit here, they're getting their butts kicked.
Maybe so, but I sure am proud as hell of being part of the majority of Americans who will abstain. It's the minority who continue to vote in what are obviously and blatantly corrupt and fraudulent elections who are destroying this country. If they had faced reality and accepted responsibility for their mistakes years ago maybe we wouldn't be in such a mess. But no one can seriously claim that the Democrats or Republicans can do anything but make things worse. Abstain folks, it's the only thing a patriot can do. Toast is right. The worst possible thing you can do as an American at this point is validate this fraud. It's the ultimate act of corruption.
Be A Poll Worker and Save American Democracy

and Bob and Harvey believe having the votes counted fairly, the votes cast for the 2 candidates of the corporate party, is the way to save America ?
Did you watch a debate yesterday Bob & Harvey ? I didn't either. I saw two corporate whores trying to act like there were significant differences between them, to try to fool the people into believing that they actually have a choice, that they actually live in a democratic republic. Bunch of horse hockey.
Bob & Harv have you noticed over the past 30 years how every candidate who would dare stand up for the people, the Constitution, are deemed irrelevant, "unelectable" and discarded by the corporate media....and SURPRISE ! The only candidates "electable" according to the corporate media are the corporate candidates . Golly Gosh By Georgie Porgie What A Coincidence !
Why is this article posted on CD
I'm appalled by the silly title of this article, but heartened by the user comments. CDers have still got it.
;)
People would take democrats SO much more seriosly if they would JUST STOP WHINING. The election is not going to be stolen, sheep. But, I guess it makes you feel better, absolving you from any blame for having a "hate AmeriKKKa" message that, curiously, Americans do not want to vote for.
liberals have a "hate America message" ?
This country has been destroyed since 1980 because liberals are so far removed from the power structure. It has been ultra right wingers and Clinton corporate Democrats who have destroyed this country. The union movement is dead, the word "liberal" turned into a dirty word by the corporate media and the Democratic Party candidates are usually to the far right of Dwight Eisenhower.
America would be gone right now, but for the failsafes put into place by FDR, the same ones under assault by those in power since 1980.
Every positive accomplishment, forward movement made in the United States has been paid for with liberal blood, and fought against by conservatives.
It is you and yours who hate America. Look what you've done twice now, when given 30 years at the helm of the country.
The proof is in the pudding. Take your right wing vomit back to Limbaugh world, where pigshit propaganda is played as patriotism. You'll like it there. They're your people
"There is a simple answer for what you can do: be a poll worker."
I'm sorry... I just see this "solution" as being hardcore self-delusion.
It is totally ludicrous that you would think *for one moment* that insuring the success of one or the other of these two corporatist servants is high on my list of priorities.
They both deserve nothing more than to lose.
If you really want to commit to democracy... do NOT participate in this fraud. Work for real change. Do NOT validate those who disenfranchise you.
Empower yourself and those others who are striving to make a real difference. Disable the corrupt system.
We may not have a candidate that inspires you at the moment. But we could use the practice of insuring an honest vote. Once people get involved, even in a small way, they tend to pay attention and develop consciousness faster than if they sit on the couch. And we will need experienced people when we have high stakes at the polls in the near future as we develop alternative candidates.
I understand your disgust, but feel your response is ceding the whole electoral arena to those who are disgusting you. The right to vote is a tool we have and we would be very sorry if it were completely taken away. Right now it is co-opted, but could be revitalized for good candidates.
Personally I endorse people working in any way they see fit to promote democracy. Passivity is just as dangerous as supporting bad policies.
Joe
Lesserevilism just another form of what you call passivity.
You think willfully ignorant, scared people voting for the less evil of 2 corporate monsters are "promoting democracy".
I think they're promoting 1939 Germany
Unless Obama can actually prove that he's much different than Mccain, the GOP probably won't bother stealing this election as the voters will feel helpless this time around. :(
