Shame: The US War Against Unarmed Working Mothers
Is this what our nation has come to? War against unarmed working mothers? Have we no shame?
Dozens of petite young mothers gathered this week in the parking lot outside the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Mississippi. Each wore a long dress or pants to hide their electronic ankle bracelets. Lift up a pants leg and you can see the black plastic band and monitor which is the size of a pack of cigarettes. Most wore sandals. Several were obviously pregnant.
From the outside the building looked like any office park. But a blue Homeland Security flag waved right next to the red white and blue out in front. Inside, the mothers were being interviewed and readied for deportation.
The crime these mothers are charged with? Not guns, not drugs, not spying. Working to put food on the table for their families and not being citizens of the U.S.
Heavily armed federal agents stormed the Laurel Mississippi parts plant where they worked in late August. Helicopters swarmed in an operation ABC News described as "paramilitary." Agents shackled hundreds of workers at the wrist, waist and ankles.
About one hundred women and nearly three hundred men were arrested. Most of the men are in prison. The women are wearing ankle bracelets 24/7.
One of the women has been working in the US for eleven years. She has children 8 and 7 years old. Another has been here 2 years and has a one year old child. One started work at the raided plant three weeks before ICE showed up.
In the Homeland Security office, no guns were visible. Agents were polite as interviews were conducted at several desks in an open office area. Yet tears dripped down the face of one mother as federal agents questioned her.
These hundred mothers are a tiny fraction of the casualties of the U.S. war on unarmed mothers and fathers.
In 2007, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 30,408 immigrants, about double the number for 2006.
This 2008 election season finds federal criminal agents more active than ever. A few recent operations will illustrate.
In April 2008, federal agents arrested about 400 immigrants working at chicken plants in Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.
In May, US officials rushed eleven restaurants in San Francisco arresting 63 immigrant workers.
Later in May, 389 immigrants were arrested in Pottsville, Iowa for working at a meatpacking plant in what was then the largest workplace raid in US history. Federal agents packing heavy duty weapons surrounded the plant while others in helicopters swarmed overhead.
In July, 43 agricultural workers were arrested in Hawaii.
In August, federal officials arrested 59 people working at a parachute plant in North Carolina. Also in August, ICE agents arrested 42 undocumented people working at the Dulles airport.
Later in August, over 350 workers were arrested in Laurel Mississippi setting a new record for the largest single workplace immigration raid in US history.
Thus far in September, there have been an increasing number of raids. In early September, federal agents raided a bakery in Palm Springs arresting 53 workers. Another September raid netted 65 arrests at a candle plant in Arizona. In Chicago, federal agents swooped in by helicopter and arrested 21 people.
In just the last week, federal agents raided a house in Hercules, California, arresting 21 undocumented workers, and raided a hotel in Maui arresting another 21.
The U.S. Catholic Bishops, no leftist group, condemned the raids in September saying, "The humanitarian costs of these raids are immeasurable and unacceptable in a civilized society."
What the hell is going on? How many working mothers and fathers and children must be sacrificed in this election year war?
Does the U.S. feel so vulnerable that we really need to declare war on unarmed working mothers and conduct paramilitary raids on bakeries, candle shops, and meatpacking plants in order to feel safe? Shame on us.

Show AllIf one is here in this country illegally, one should expect to be treated in a less than cordial manner; if I were in Mexico illegally, I would be in the hooscal right now if I couldn't produce a passport and legal documents giving me the right to be in THEIR country. So please stop being so compassionate with lawbreakers. Instead, all you protesters should petition Congress, yes Congress for a temporary workers program which would allow individuals to be here legally if they do not qualify under any of the other foreign worker visa programs. Protesting about treatment, when one is in violation of the law is just plain silly and shows a great disrespect for the "rule of law" which most Americans believe is one of their most cherished principles.

I do not feel patriotic, but I believe in equal treatment and fairness and I know what would happen to me if I played fast and loose with the laws of another country.
I say again, all you progressives and liberals need to petition Congress for a guest worker program to legalize these people who come to this country to work.

It isn't a question of safety. It is a question of wanting them to be deported so that these jobs become open at REAL wages to American citizens. The jobs "that Americans won't do" are really jobs that Americans won't do AT THAT WAGE. These jobs are that way because of a ready supply of warm bodies that are willing to work for slave wages. Once they are gone, the work will still be there and it is going to get done by Americans at higher prices, or it isn't going to get done at all. THAT is where we are going with this. There are going to be entry level and employment of last resort available again when the illegal aliens are gone.
You and I and everyone want a social net to save those at the bottom. Well there's no better net than a job and there is a direct relationship to deporting illegal aliens and jobs for Americans.
As for them wearing ankle bracelets, they are going to be deported and now the ICE will know where they are when their appeals are over. Isn't that better than them being in jail too? It seems very humane to me as bottom line, they are going to be deported.

Your post is a little hard to understand though, how is "Rockerbabe" mysogynist? If someone decides that is what they want to call themselves, then that is their call and you should NOT be second guessing them. How paternalistic and mysogynistic of *you* to assume that you can tell them what they want to be called. Throughout these last 40 years women have worked hard to regain their center and identity from a world that has taken the even the words for their parts and turned them into words shameful and dirty. Thank you. I am 1/4 Native American, my family was here when all of you, including a good number of other family members got off the boat from Europe in the early 1900's. I have no real issue with immigration, except that immigrants follow the laws of our country and learn English [so they can communicate with the rest of us]. That includes the folks from down south, way south of the border. Immigration is not a feminist issue, except in general terms. I say again, we need a guess worker program to help protect foreign workers from abuse and mistreatment.

So, how many BILIONS of immigrants should we allow to walk into here? How many Americans should just be allowed to plant themselves in Canada or Venezuela or wherever?
What up with this. You don't like cheep labor? Just kidding. Were any of the buininess owners arrested for hiring illegal aliens? No? Well they were the ones who invited these poor people here in the first place. Give them all a change at citizenship. They work hard and are more informed than most Amerikkins. Deport the anti-democratic, anti-rule of law Pigs in DC and we will be much better off. These immagrants will make much better neighbors as well.
And what about unarmed working fathers? This article is a bit too gender divisive. Men and women are both suffering equally. And whether they're armed or unarmed is irrelevant. In my state of South Carolina, gun ownership goes up but so does joblessness and foreclosures even among the middle class whites big time.
Non-citizen-disposable labour? It is not just in the US. Dubai is a good example. They take in the workers they need. It works out the same as shipping the jobs overseas doesn’t it? If the workers imagine that they have some sort of rights, then they can be shipped back to where they came from and replaced with somebody else. If US torture bases don’t give their victims human rights, then why would you expect US employers to?
It gets sticky however when the first class population (white/Christian/whatever) begins to be dwarfed by the non-voting slaves. Then, you might have to employ some serious muscle, should trouble arise.
Control of a border and who crosses it is part of the basic definition of a state. There is no question that the business owners should be arrested and tried, but so also should the illegal aliens who came here illegally.
We have to address the supply and the demand here. Remember that reducing the number of illegal aliens working in this country is a tremendously important progressive issue. In an open market, cheap labor anywhere cheapens labor everywhere. We need to be builiding up our unions and protecting our poor. If we feel that there is work for us to do helping Mexico (Mexicans represent 52% of all illegal aliens in the US according to the Pew Hispanic Center and Latin Americans of non-Mexican descent another 29% for a total of 81% or illegal aliens being Hispanic.) then we need to help them regain their economy that we stole with NAFTA. Portability of labor reduces all labor to the minimum of all labor.
How about this for a novel idea: Stability THEN baby!!!! A world paradigm shift that encourages RESPONSIBLE procreation!!!!! UH OH! An anti-baby rant!

You're right.
That doesn't mean I'm wrong though.
They are two issues. We should not be overseas killing, but how does that make it right to not work to help Americans get jobs? To build unions? To help communities get living wages? Those are the things that we should be doing AS WELL AS not killing others overseas.
If you think that because we do bad things overseas we should also help to perpetuate what amounts to illegal alien slavery at the expense of our own citizens, then I don't think you have really thought this out or you are simply against progressive ideals which makes you some sort of Republican.

Since you asked, the illegal alien is a person that crosses a national border without paperwork from the state they are entering to seek employment or residence. The sort of people that the slave trader McCain (your candidate?) seems to determined to bring in.
Illegal aliens have no legal status and are forced to work for low wages in jobs that once were our jobs of last resort and entry level positions in the workforce. If there were no illegal aliens, the work would still be there and employeers would need to pay more to get people to do the work. Simple economics. And to those that say the work would be shifted off shore, not these jobs because they are tied to the geography. You can't outsource framing a house unless you bring the illegal labor to the house, you aren't going to take the house there to be built.

Borders myabe arbitary, but they are a fact of life. Just go into Canada or Mexico or any Caribean nation without peoper documentation and see what happens to you if you get caught. The United States of America is a soverign nation and has every right to protect itself against those who are here illegally. Having kids does not give parents the right to ignore the laws of the country in which they are found or in residence as the case maybe. The rule of law, US and state laws govern our society in this as well as most other countries on this planet and those that willfully break those laws, either better not get caught or be willing to take whatever punishment the elected representatives have deems appropriate for the infraction. "the rule of law" As soon as someone uses that, it's a clue to a total mindset. "The rule of law" has been so flexible for folks who are politically conservative, that it can be bent at will of the "beholder".
Oh really? The rule of law is what sets the US apart from most of Africa and the terror of the milisia and tribal warlards; rule of law is what has set up apart from the Europeans for 250+ years [law for commoners, not the upper classes], rule of law is the great equalizer in this country. Rule of law has lead many native American tribes to enforce treaty obligations of the past, rule of law and the civil rights laws have allowed for more equal treatment of Americans of African decent, etc. Rule of law is what sets us apart from terror and monarchs. I, like many others, will be damed if I let Mexico and other South American countries use us as a dumping spot for their unwanted. We need a guest worker program; not fake righteous indignation from do nothings that refuse to see the world as it is. . .a dangerous place.

Yes, we need health care for all. A Single Payer system would save money - eliminate the insurance companies. Does anyone really want their Health Care decisions being made on Wall Street ! 18,000 die in the U$A every year because of lack of access to health care. That is like having a 9/11 every 60 days.
There is a candidate who supports the Single Payer system - NADER. He is on 45 State ballots.
Rosemarie: Dennis Kucinich also plans for universal single payer health CARE (not insurance) for all. Just one of the many ideas he hs for this Nation. He wants what most Americans want. Problem is, his ideas are "too far out there" because they're too good to be true. As a result, he's "un-electable". So now we're settling for someone who offers us so much less: Obama.

Nader hangs in there and is unshaken in his dedication to the people. If the people are smart, they will vote for Nader. Voting for the right candidate is important, even if his chances of winning are slight. When a good guy gets enough votes, it sends a message to those in power.
