Republicans, Stop Calling Obama Elitist
Because the real reason you don't like him is that he's smarter than you.
New Rule: Republicans need to stop saying Barack Obama is an elitist, or looks down on rural people, and just admit you don't like him because of something he can't help, something that's a result of the way he was born. Admit it, you're not voting for him because he's smarter than you.
In her acceptance speech, Gov. Sarah Palin accused Obama of using his run for the White House as a "journey of personal discovery" -- this from the lady who just spent 10 minutes of her speech introducing her family -- Track, Trig, Bristol, Piper -- for a minute there I thought she was calling in an airstrike.
Karl Rove described Obama as "the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini, and making snide comments about everyone who passes by." Unlike George Bush, who's the guy at the country club who makes snide comments, and then passes out. Now this characterization, of course, was something Mr. Rove just completely pulled out of his bulbous, gelatinous ass, but remember this is America, a land where people believe anything they hear. One of McCain's ads casts Obama as "the one," implying he thinks he's the Messiah. Good, maybe he can raise McCain from the dead.
It doesn't matter to Karl Rove that his country club characterization is fictitious, it's the role that Obama must play if the party of plutocrats is going to win over the little guy. Over and over at this convention we heard about the new put-upon victim in our society, the person in America, like Sarah Palin, who's constantly mocked because they're from a ... small town! Governor Yup Yup's got 'em all riled up about being disrespected.
Barack Obama can't help it if he's a magna cum laude Harvard grad and you're a Wal-Mart shopper who resurfaces driveways with your brother-in-law. Americans are so narcissistic that our candidates have to be just like us. That's why George Bush is president. And that's where the McCain camp gets its campaign strategy: Paint Obama as cocky and arrogant and wait for America to vote him off, like the black guy in every reality show. A black president? Half of Pennsylvania isn't ready for black quarterbacks. Forget Obama, they think Will Smith needs to be taken down a peg.
And finally: As for "country first," you know who's putting country first? I am, by supporting Obama, because a victory this fall for the McCain-Mooseburger ticket would make my job in the next four years very, very easy.

Show AllThere is a problem: Barack Obama simply IS an elitist! That's why it works so well. It is also why someone who is unqualified to be president (Obama) has the arrogance to run on a record that includes NO leadership - no bills sponsored, no causes championed, except for his own exceptionalism. It works because many americans who are not elitists themselves recognize that it's true. It would be a much better strategy to just say that yes, in fact, he is in an elitist, and so what? We WANT policy wonkish types running our government! (Someone like Ralph Nader, for example).
I'd rather have a semi-elitist who believes he wants to help my country than a moron who wants to eradicate grass roots movements for daring to challenge his stupidity. We need a smart man in office! Thus Obama over McCain.
Obama is better tham Mccain. Very true. But it is probably not enough to get blue collar people to run out and vote for you if you keep insulting them. Bil Maher used to be funny. But he sure knows his audience! When he's n LA-he gives a whole different schtick than he did on CNN other night. He didnt " write " this--it is from his talk show last night. i saw it and moaned.Because it serves to alienate the classes/states that Obama is failing in now.Do you want to win, or just make a historical statement? You could do both , you know. If you didnt pick the easiest targets around.African Am. versus poor whites--the oldest trick in he book. And al thesesuper smart, super educated peope keep falling for it. Hahahaha. Will yo do that when McCain wins? Go ahead. Blame it on poor people. Don takeon the real adversary--that to scary, eh? McCain thought it was hilarious, I bet. Keep it up.
"Smart" is often not enough. What , you think Dukakis and Kerry are stupid? Excuse the "forrest Gumpishness", but "smart is as smart does" is it not? Insulting the audience you are trying to win,is not really very smart , is it??
To me, morals are the most important thing. And I'm not talking about sex or weed. I'd take a moral president of average intelligence than an amoral president with a high IQ anyday.
A truly moral president wouldn't continue to raze and occupy poorer and weaker nations. A truly moral president would make sure everyone had free health care, education, food to eat, clean water to drink, a job, and a place to live. A truly moral president would be doing something drastic in terms of the environment. A truly moral president would do his or her best to make things better for everyone. McCain doesn't keep that kind of morality in his pantry, and Obama's morality is half-baked.
You don't have to be a genius to know the difference between wrong and right. You don't have to be a nuclear physicist to have a conscience.
Some of the most repugnant, unfeeling people I've ever known were considered "gifted."
On the other hand, I've known people who couldn't read or write who'd give a complete stranger their kidney if they needed it.
I.Q. (I used to have to do tests for school) often signifies nothing. You think W has a "low IQ"?? He prob. has/had a pretty high one--he just uses it liie a box of rox would. He's spoiled , arrogant, impetuous, narcissistic, and, a;though , you might thihnk---sociopathic--I actually believe, that, given all his drug/alcohol abuse, and many accidents, that he has a temporal lobe prob.--could manifest as sociopathy/psyhopathy. It's WHAT you use, HOW you use--as far as IQ goes. You also must have a functioning conscience, and, I think,. you have to have lived through some hardship and, it is better if someone helped you out of it and you felt gratitude and humility and determined to pay it forward to someone else. That is what I'd like to see uina President.

for the record.. the standard IQ test.. either the stanford binet or the weckslar ( spelling).. measure intelligence as a body of knowledge, all of us are measured against what a white upper middle class male would know at any given age..
in reading tests.. it has been proven that learners with a low reading ability will test as high as an exceptional reader WHEN they are reading material that is familar with them. Example, a poor reader will test well in comprehension if he already has a knowledge base of baseball, per se.
The reading questions on the NCLB.. ( and this is directly from one of Greg Palasts interviews).. children in the cities are failing the tests.. how many kids do you know in the inner cities that know what goes on at a country club, or have ever played doubles tennis? do a youtube search for greg palast and you can find this interview.
SO.. we can safely dismiss the notion of IQ and intelligence.. as a guide.. and I agree that there are many people who are not intellectuals or overly educated that have a much better capacity for comprehension than the ivy leaguers. a good friend of mine was an 8th grade drop-out.. but had more brains going for her than most college grads. and for the record.. the truly genuinely gifted.. are more likely to drop out, do drugs or worse.. commit suicide ( peak age, 15!!! what does that say about how we honour the best and brightest)... the students who get A's.. are not the smartest kids in the classroom... just the ones who are geared toward " right answers" simple solutions. That guy working in the walmart parking lot.. may have been smarter than the yalie's.. ( spelling?).. but since his learning style isn't congruent with the teachers he grew up feeling not-smart and never filled his potential. I've worked with a number of these sorts of kids, who by grade 6!!!! know they have been written off as lazy, stupid and therefore have no real academic expectations put on them.
But sociologically speaking.. brave new world wants this sort of dumbed down consumer who has been turned into sheep..
methinks someone needs to have it out with the good shepherd..:)
Teri D-Thanks for your post. I'll look for that Greg Palast interview. I know it has been said that standardized testing and learning models are biased against anyone who isn't white and upper-middle class and that kids learn differently based on their backgrounds. Most of these kids are freshwater fish trying to compete in the ocean.
I remember when I was in school, throughout K-12 we had "scholars" and "gifted" programs, and one thing that always struck me was that the vast majority of the kids in these programs were white and seemed to come from higher income brackets. The schools I went to were urban and were very diverse racially and economically. Now when I come across these people on facebook, they seem to be the ones with the cushy jobs.
yes- there is a lot of data coming out now that gives a better insight as to why minorities do not do as well in school. american schools ( can't say for other countries) are, like the intelligence testing.. geared toward the white upper-middle class male.
There is a very intersting book, and not nearly as granole crunchy as the title sounds: the alphabet and the goddess. It talks about the nature/ neurology of the brain and its relation to language and writing. pre-literate cultures process with the whole brain, the right brain, whole images, concepts etc..
writing, creates a whole new neurological hard-wiring in the brain. it is lineal and creates a brain that is predisposed to heirarchical development. further predisposing culture to the patriarchical model that western europe/ judeo-christian model.
now- add to that.. knowledge we are now collecting about the brain and dyslexia.. reading is the newest development for the brain in evolutionary terms. there is no area of the brain designated for decoding. 3 other areas of the brain " double" taking over these functions.. the final one is whole word recognition- which the dyslexic lacks.. and is therefore always decoding each word as though it were for the first time.
anyway- the western european/ judeo-christian tradition has been literate far longer than most of the minority cultures.. and they have not been selecting for that trait in terms of what makes a viable/optimal spouse partner etc..
the minority cultures and indigenous cultures of the world still have a whole brain/ right brain approach to the world and learning. reading is much more difficult for them as a whole than it is for the western european. they learn best with music, dance, storytelling and whole- engagement experiences..
add that into the IQ mix as well...
the european tradition is geared to heavily favour its own- which i suppose is bio-selection? any adult in a herd will do the best to assure its own offspring has the best chance of survival...? so, not exactly a level playing field... so yes.. they are freshwater fish trying to compete in a saltwater ocean.. and there are sharks in the ocean:)
That is why I said IQ signifies almost nothing. Most psychologists figured that out a long time ago. About the only place they are given an credence is in the military--until lately. There seems to be a general concensus these days, though, that more schoo is always better. There are a great many things in life that cannot be learned in school at all. Sorry, but I just dont believe the right brain/left brain theories of racial differences. If a brain was sitting on the table in front of you (or an MRI that showed you brain chem function) I can assure you that you would not be able to tell what race that person supposedly belonged to.
I agree: So called intelligence, physical strength, talent, beauty or any asset mean nothing unless guided by kindness. Otherwise intelligence turns into skillful sociopathy, strength becomes bullying.
Joe
We are not making sense here. What is the definition of an elitist? Are there different kinds of elitists? Are people elite if they think thety are elite or do they have to be "superior"?
Are high IQ people intellectual elites? Are they inherently smug and bad?
Are all super-rich mutlti-millionaires wealthy elites? Inherently greedy? What if they donate half their income to the poor?
Is there a power elite class in America with ties to the military industry-energy industry-and congress and the CIA/Shadow government? Is Obama a POWER ELITE or is McSame a poer elite? Is the nature of a shadowy over-class of pro-war elites inherently evil? I believe it is purely evil. That makes McCain, Bush, Cheney, RUmmy, and anyone who knowingly supports their unneccessary wars equally guilty.
good points/ questions..
however.. the way the term is being tossed around by the republicans and media.. it isn't even relevant..
they want it to feel like a bad thing.. they don't want the populace to ask what it means. In much the same way they made " liberal" an evil word several years ago.
Obama. bad. Elitist.bad. Obama. Liberal. Bad.
it is about association and emotions. In much the same way, W made everyone believe Saddam Hussein was behind 9-11.. simply through the proximity of the two words.. repetitively, in every speech.
Has anyone read the book, the political mind? It looks very interesting but I haven't gotten to it yet.
Hey, Doofus.........get some education. Here is only a partial list of the bills sponsored by Barack Obama since he became a senator. I couldn't list them all because of space confinements on this blog. Get your head out of your ass and do some research before you spout off at the mouth. If you want to see the whole list, go to the Obama website and click on the Bills Sponsored link.

One comment. I'm so tired of the lies, like this post. I'm not usually this frank, but enough of this.
I used to say that the candidate with the most testosterone will always win the presidency in America. While I still believe this to a large degree, I am beginning to believe that another tell-tale sign of sure victory is the basic IQ level of the candidate. The Republicans, with their freedom chanting and lets all die together for our corporate fathers mentality, definitely have the advantage in this upcoming election. It's hard to beat the Republican Party for sheer, unadulterated stupidity. Looking forward to the third-world country that the Republican Party will finally deliver to us Muricans. i've always wanted to stand around a barrel fire in the street. It may be the only way for Americans to get re-acquainted with one another. McCain/Palin 08!
If you guys think Obama is an elitist then the McCain college-student led war room has done its job.
Voting for mcain't sane because he's as dumb as a sack of hammers??? Isn't that the attitude that got you bush?
Way to go, Maher. Another nail in Obama's coffin. >:-)
But seriously, this "logic" is getting really old. It's equivalent to concluding that women who oppose "beauty" pageants are ugly and jealous. Come on, boys, can't you come up with a better argument ?
Bill Maher is just another corporate unmarried shill. He knows that Obama/Biden is a DUD. Ask him to vote for Nader or any 3rd party candidate and he'll demean you.
Something about being single that upsets you? Spit it out, I 'm curious...also Ive been single for 26 years, ever since my wife died of cancer.....
Maher is hardly alone in believing third party politics an unreachable notion, but he is certainly witty, is definitely liberal on most issues, and is smart enough to come around when we have worked hard enough to make third parties a viable option.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.
Anais Nin
Ok, my apologies for using the word single. It's just that once on the Larry King show, he thought marriage was a dumb thing because he'd have to put up with babies. That's where I thought he was out of his mind. Don't get me wrong. I completely respect singles who haven't married yet or lost their spouse to death, separation, or even divorce.
His opinions are exactly that, his own. When they coincide with mine I applaud, when they dont I sit on my hands. There is much good in believing that one does not have to increase the population any further.( full disclosure alert...I have four kids, fourteen grandkids and one great granddaughter). Dwindling resources etc.,Of course, being a comedian as he is one should really assess what is opinion and what is meant as humor.
Besides, as Maher has a long history of opposition to the right, and had the courage to speak out about the events of 9/11 in a manner that got him fired and temporarily blacklisted, you gotta give him props, dontcha think?
For those unaware:
Shortly after 9/11, in responding to a remark about the "cowardly attack" on our soil, Maher noted that, in his opinion, it was more cowardly to sit five miles off shore and lob artillery shells onto defenseless civilians than it was to fly a plane into a building......see ya Bill.
We see things, not as they are, but as we are.

There is nothing wrong with a guy working paving wal-marts parking lot (walmart itself being an evil opportunist empire aside).. I believe, like the more indigenous SA perspective.. it isn't how good your job is, but how well you do your job...
BUT..this is not the person I want sitting at the table brokering international peace agreements. granted with a political interpreter to let him know what is accurate and what something really means... it might be more effective than having politicians do it... but this guy is not inherently ready or have the critical thinking skills to be quick on his feet in the international arena.
DAMN STRAIGHT yes i DO want an elitist on the front line. and hopefully that elitist will raise the bar/ standard for americans as a whole to aspire toward. the W bart simpson model hasn't fared very well for this country.
Every teacher knows that when there are gifted students in the classroom - it raises the performance of all the other students...
Obama's response should be-- Yes I am capable and have worked hard to succeed.. and I want to bring that possibility to each and every American!
Democrats and the Obama party need to stop driveling and grovelling over republican digs and jabs and swipes.. and make those their strongest political assets! have some pride/backbone already!
Woodrow Wilson was an "elitist". He was probably also the WORSE president we ever had; he taught the Mexicans how to "elect good men", let the British dupe us into WW I, he gave us prohibition (and hence the Mafia), and his restrictions on civil liberties make Bush look like an ACLU member. His racial attitudes were not exactly "progressive", either.
And those were his good points.
Oh my, you forgot:
__ Bringing the USA into W W I -- which he said he wouldn't do while campaigning
__ Passage of Federal Reserve Banking Act
which has essentially destroyed participatory democracy, by giving the avariciously blinded bankers and corpoRAPISTs, ultimate control of gov't's purse strings and agenda
Namaste
Did you read my comment "Let the British dupe us into WW I"?
What was EVEN WORSE, he shut down the 1918 Baseball season on Labor Day. (to "support the war effort.") What a bastard.
Actually it twas the ZIONISTS ( ZioNAZIst ) behind the British "duping" ( which occurred clearly on both sides of Atlantic )
Namaste
'Woodrow Wilson was an "elitist". He was probably also the WORSE president we ever had...'
Not so fast - he has to get in line behind Reagan, Bush 43, Harding, Grant, Bush 41, Buchanan and quite a few others.
It is difficult to take seriously some Cat who earns his living off the corporate media gravy train inside the holliwood beltway. The fact is Obama, McCain and the pack of sheep that follow either candidate and the elitist holliwood, corporate owned cheerleaders that support them have nothing in common with us. Dumbo ought to get a real life with the rest of the peasantry living off of diminishing pay scales thanks to the status quo THEY ALL REPRESENT. This Cat makes a pretty good living commenting on our suffering while driving around in his SUV and hobnobbing with the rest of the elites he speaks for. Moreover, he ought to be posting his jaundiced views in the corporate owned section and not here. Since I dont own a TV, I dont have to tune in to his corporate tripe.
SUV? I'm pretty sure Bill Maher was the first guy in Hollywood to buy a Prius; he helped to popularize it. Also, have you no sense of humor? This piece was really funny!
It's only funny if you find humor in gross stereotypes.
You Tube "West Virginia Voters".... and talk to me about "gross stereotypes". Certain people base their ideas on absolute mis-truths... and they vote BASED on those mistruths. There is no doubt in my mind that Barak Obama is smarter than both McCain and Palin- No doubt whatsoever. But if we want a more representative democracy- well, ... McCain/Palin it is....
"Watch television, watch all those...officials who...stand
up and talk about bringing peace to the world and they talk
about curing inflation and they talk about new energy programs
that we're going to have. And they're well-dressed in suits
and ties, and they don't appear scared behind the microphone.
I wonder if there's one of you, I'm serious, I wonder if there's
one of you in this room who really sees that that man and that
woman are talking in their sleep. They don't know anything.
The last thing they know is how to cure inflation, because that's
a spiritual problem. The last thing they know is how to save
energy - that's a spiritual problem. The last thing they know is
how to make other people happy - that's a spiritual problem.
Therefore, they are lying, they're deceiving you because they've
first deceived themselves. Is there one of you here who sees
deeply into that, who understands it? I'll guarantee you the
first time you see it you will collapse in horror at what is
going on on this earth.
If you don't see it, you're still a part of it."
Teachings DVD 36, Talk # 1
No, just like all the rest, Obama is 'talking in his sleep,' spiritual sleep.
when obama included people sceptical about "free" trade agreements along with biblers and gun toters in his SF speech, i began to see him as an elitist. and that comment about guys resurfacing driveways with their brothers-in-law...oh, sure...that's all we need to hear
Talk about a nonsensical article by a Democratic Party hack, it is unfortunate that just about all the articles on Common Dreams frame the so-called elections as a Republican vs. Democrat duel - when in fact it is nothing more than a competition between two equally repugnant faces, both of whom have promised to kill more once they take office - both are more of the same.
The issue here is not who is elitist or who is not --- they are both serving the elites - or the ruling imperialist class, both frame their favoring imperial wars as something about the "security" of the "american people" - and both will not invest in the people of American, and will instead invest heavily in wars, and give breaks to mega corporations. They only have small differences in rhetoric.
But what this article does try and do is to cast a blanket on any discussion about class, especially classism within racial "minorities" - in fact, it gives the distinct impression of favoring that narrative that assumes that someone who has "made it" as part of the US ruling class (Harvard etc.) is somehow "better" than your run of the mill Wal Mart shopper. Most of those who shop at Wal Mart do so because the economy is so screwed up, and the goods are way cheaper at Wal Mart --- i.e. they are making an intelligent choice based on their circumstance. There are only a small minority of white yuppie types who have the resources to shop at small botique type stores, and pay three or four times for the same item.
The Wal Mart in my area has a way higher % of latino, asian, black shoppers than little indy stores that primarily now cater to whites --- that does not mean those shoppers are stupid, it means they are responding as they should to economics. The shoppers are not the issue, the economy that favors wal mart is, and Obama/McCain offer nothing in the way that would change those dynamics.
http://almusawwir.org/resistance/
The problem with Wal-Mart is that shopping there only exacerbates our problems.
Yes, of-course, I agree with you --- but for many that is the only choice. Many who shop at wal-mart are making choices like how much food on the table, vs. how much to pay for gas, and how much to pay for rent. This is an economic issue --- i.e. shopping at wal-mart is a symptom - and there is no way that people are going to stop shopping at wal mart, while there are few good paying jobs. Especially, for those working class people of asian/latino/black backgrounds who make up the majority of shoppers at the wal mart in my area (I'm sure that in white working class areas, it will be white working class who shop at wal mart, not the yuppie types).
There is a class issue that needs to be addressed, and clarifying the reasons why wal mart is so popular, simply dissing wal mart shoppers, or telling people to not shop at wal mart is going to lead to nothing.
http://almusawwir.org/resistance/
Most retail outlets have been copying Walmarts from employees to customer service. Also, unlike K-Mart, Wal-Mart learned its lessons and adjusted, not that I can tolerate their greenwashing schemes. If people want their shit "cheap", they're gonna get it that way.
P.S.:
Even in places in South Carolina where I live, where Walmart is 30 miles away from where some people live, these people ignore their local mom and pop stores that are 5 to 10 miles at most away from their homes and travel all the way to Wal-Mart despite the long term rising prices of gas which are going to go right back up right after this election is over. Usually, they do it though for the bulk loads. Interestingly, most of these same people shop at Sams and Costco as well so maybe there's room for improvement.
The trick to getting local Mom and Pop stores to succeed is the same as the small farms. Never get seduced by "cheap" tricks. When small farmers gave up and allowed Big Agri to ruin them by privatizing farming and turning everything into chemical and fast-fooding, America entered the slow-but-long-term poisoning of their foods. The same thing happened when Big Retail forced small Mom and Pop stores to choose whole sale volume sales as somehow better for business over product quality. By sacrificing quality for quick bucks, the long term DAMAGE had been set. I can recall in 1984 when this all started. I was in my late 20s and my wife alerted me to the disturbing trend of more people moving away from local mom and pop to bigger retail outlets. At that time, I was foolish to ignore it. One decade later, I admitted to her that she was correct to predict ahead of time the long term dangers ahead.
The system is too infested with rampant consumerism and its ongoing addiction that until that problem is corrected, Walmart will remain a symptom.
FrederickJohnson-
A lot of people don't have mom and pop stores near them, and many of the ones that are there gouge people and charge even more than the big stores do. They're basically independent "convenience" stores. I know it's that way in my area. I always try to do business in my own community, but my neighborhood doesn't have everything, and many depressed areas have nothing.
I stay away from Wal-Mart, but not everyone can afford to do that.
walmart being affordable is an illusion we haven't seen through yet. it has been proven that every dollar that is spent locally stays in the local economy longer.. becoming the equivalent of.. 3-4.00$ ( anyone have this statistic by any chance.. I don't have it offhand)..
in reality- we cannot afford to shop at walmart..
nor can we afford cheap fast food ( obesity and illnesses are expensive)...
I am very "income challenged". But I wouldnt buy a damn thing at Wal-Mart, unless it was the only place left that had water. Alot of people seem to think that they have no choice but to shop Wal-Mart. I have never bought anything there in my entire life. I have never watched American Idol. I've never bought a new car, let alone a Hummer.I am not obese, I do not smoke. I dont eat meat. I am poor and white. Stop the war on the poor. I hate the GOP (although my father was an "old school" Repub. who left when Nixon came along. Mom was rabid GOP al the way)and keep hoping for Dems to reform. Will prob wait the rest of my life.
Bill Maher is a well known INDEPENDENT. Not a Democratic Party hack.
