24 Hours to Stop Keystone XL in the US Senate
Take action today to fight against the world's dirtiest oil
We have followed the fight against the Keystone XL pipeline from the beginning, and we'll continue to cover developments until this pipeline -- and the ones that are sure to follow -- have been soundly defeated. Today, however, we join with those at the center of this struggle and urge you to play your part in fighting off the most recent attempt to ram approval for the pipeline through the US Senate.
What follows is a note from our friends at 350.org, who have led this fight from the beginning and show no signs of yielding.
Dear friends,When we started the fight about Keystone there were just a few of us, and no one thought we had a chance. But with hard work and lots of great organizing we scored an unlikely victory when the President eventually rejected the pipeline last month. However, the oil industry’s representatives in Congress are eager to undo that, and it looks like a deal could be coming together in the Senate this week to make that happen. It’s time for us to defend our victory.Beginning at noon today (Monday), every environmental group in the nation, not to mention great allies like MoveOn.org and CREDO Action, will come together for the most concentrated burst of environmental advocacy this millennia. We’re aiming to send half a million email messages to the Senate in the next 24 hours. And they’ll all have the same message: back up the President and make sure this pipeline doesn’t get built. This is what movements look like. And we need you to play a big part.1—Send a message right now to the Senate: http://act.350.org/sign/kxl/and2—Make sure that everyone else you know does the same thing. Use your social networks. Tell your friends and neighbors. Call your Senators directly. Do what you can to convince the Senate that 'people power' will win out over the 'money power' of the fossil fuel industry.

Show AllObama did NOT "reject" the pipeline.
IF he had, the actions of the senate would not be happening now.
Asking me to "back up the president" is just plain stupid and delusional.
Obama is part of the problem.
Wake up.
Okay to quibble, but please act too.
"jclientelle"
I have and it is NOT a "quibble".
Accepting falsehoods as truth is clearly dangerous and AGAIN I will point out,
The senate could NOT be doing this if Obama had rejected the pipeline. Obama set this up to happen and McKibben and Co. are stupid to make excuses for the criminal.
Thank you. Perhaps quibble was the wrong word, that tends to diminish a principled point. I worry that some are so offended by the characterization of Obama that they will do nothing. You do see the main event, which is to stop this awful project. Obama did temporarily reject the pipeline, and you are correct to point out the tactical nature and limitations of that move.
Well then you just stand up for the republicans, after all every single republican is fighting for this disaster, And every single republican is fighting to say solar and wind energy is not obtainable, so just give up and blame Obama. You wake up birdbrain!
"constitutional"
You certainly do love to misrepresent what I write.
You seem to be of the same "constitutional" as Obama.
Am I wrong? Please explain.
Now you folks... just see how the elite leave us all squabbling amongst ourselves whilst they pay no attention at all to any of us!
Bingo.
Opportunists that they are, enough emails, letters and demonstrations may induce them to reject the Tar Sands development. Here is what I wrote to my Senators:
"Please stop this disastrous project. NYS does not need it and the planet does not need it. Please take a lead in developing truly clean and safe energy such as solar and wind. It would mean a lot of jobs, a more secure energy future for individuals and enterprises, and would be beneficial for the environment."
Contacting our senators at this time is essential.
Attention was rightly focused on the President originally in the effort to stop the pipeline, the result being that many Congresspersons do not realize how important stopping the pipeline is to their constituents. I was personally told by an aide to one of my senators that the Senator needs to hear from more of us.
Let your Senators know that this project is completely unacceptable and without merit and that you want us to reset to clean energy production now. Then send a message to your lists informing them about the need to contact their Senators as well.
Let's blame Obama for not fighting hard enough to stop this fucking nightmare! Fine, I'm not a huge Obama lover either, but I am getting tired of blaming Obama for not fighting the republicans. Blame Obama? Put the blame where the blame belongs, the damn republicans are the ones fighting to pass this for big oil and the Koch brothers. the people of America once again takes all the risk and pays to clean up the mess when it fails but not one drop of oil will be sold to us even at inflated prices, the politicians financial backers make billions and we take the gamble. How can that be Obamas fault when we have been dealing with it for eleven years?
