Battlefield America: U.S. Citizens Face Indefinite Military Detention in Defense Bill Before Senate
The Senate is set to vote this week on a Pentagon spending bill that could usher in a radical expansion of indefinite detention under the U.S. government. A provision in the National Defense Authorization Act would authorize the military to jail anyone it considers a terrorism suspect — anywhere in the world — without charge or trial. The measure would effectively extend the definition of what is considered the military’s "battlefield" to anywhere in the world, even within the United States. Its authors, Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, have been campaigning for its passage in a bipartisan effort. But the White House has issued a veto threat, with backing from top officials including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and FBI Director Robert Mueller. “This would be the first time since the McCarthy era that the United States Congress has tried to do this,” says our guest, Daphne Eviatar of Human Rights First, which has gathered signatures from 26 retired military leaders urging the Senate to vote against the measure, as well as against a separate provision that would repeal the executive order banning torture. “In this case, we’ve seen the administration very eagerly hold people without trial for 10-plus years in military detention, so there’s no reason to believe they would not continue to do that here. So we’re talking about indefinite military detention of U.S. citizens, of lawful U.S. residents, as well as of people abroad.”

Show AllSeems like divine justice or karma to me. We Americans swagger around the world, violating people's basic human rights from Honduras to Abu Ghraib; we shouldn't be surprised when the crimes we visit on people around the world come home to haunt us.
It will be only a matter of time before they use this new law against the Occupied Movement. The Democrats are as fascist as any Republican.
Yep. Welcome to AmeriKKKa!!
Karma/JUSTICE is a bitch. I hope and believe it will catch up with these Fascist bastards real soon. There is a special Hell for the Rayguns, Walkers, Levins, Hannitys, bin Ladins, heck make your own list. Azzes like Pike and the coward who shot my BIA, Scott Olsen, I hope you and your families die from a long, lingering, very painful death. Maybe then you will have time to repent your chickenshit lives!
We are now seeing the "what." Here is the long tested "how." The "why" is power, greed and fear.

Fourteen Defining Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Source Free Inquiry.co

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over”
And:
“Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”
Joseph Goebbels, MiniProp for Hitler’s Third Reich
1897-1945

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same for any country."
Herman Goering to Gustave Gilbert at Nuremberg, 18 April, 1946

No fascist movement has lasted forever, but life gets very hard for all but the elite and their lackeys while it is going on. We are beginning to see that side as Occupy continues to grow and the level of fear grows in the Oligarchy.
I remember years ago, when China embarked on something that looked like capitalism, pundits said that this was good because China would become more like the West, that is, free.
Apart from the fact that there is a serious misunderstanding what the equations have to say about capitlism's relation to freedom, if one looks closer at Hari Seldon's psychohistory, you will quickly note that as China becomes "more like the West", the West will become more like China.
Terrible times are coming to the Third Galaxy
Terrible times have been in the third galaxy for a long time just the names and places are changing. Being blind and being innocent are not the same thing.
Fascism didn't disappear in 1945. It was always alive in the U S A.
Dieu et mon droit.
Fascism is just modern clothes for empire. It's been around for CENTURIES. The fasces is an invention of the roman empire of two thousand years ago. The operative principle of empire/fascism is oligarchism; some are rulers/users, the rest are ruled/used, NO consent of the ruled is considered. It recognizes the true source of wealth; people... the only thing worth owning (if one has an aversion to producing one's own wealth, in concert with others).
From looking at those 14 things, I'd say it's already alive and functioning in the USA. Many people are too young to remember what freedom really is.
Welcome to AmeriKKKa!!
Interesting, the primary architects of the Nuremburg protocols (US/Britian/France) are now the biggest violaters of them!
And to think, it all started with 9/11... Dick Cheney was in charge that day.
Nope..."It" all started on December 12, 2000. That is the day that the supreme court appointed Chucklenuts Bush Emperor of The Empire. It's been straight downhill from there into the toilet.
So, Dem. Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona have just declared war on everybody in the world, including themselves -unless there's an exception clause for them.
What a brilliant pair!
I think we should have them arrested for attempted treason of the American people!
This is a clear violation of their Constitutional powers. They can't just "appoint" themselves rulers of the world to do as they please! Unless the lazy idiots of the US don't bother to pay attention. Well, FYI, only 3% of the population fought in the Revolutionary War, so I think we can find enough people today to round up the 545 in DC and send them where they should be, as THEY are the true terrorists terrorizing Americans and the rest of the world with their insane "laws". All laws that are unconstitutional are void! McCain and Levin need to retire.
