Senator Bernie Sanders: Calling for Shared Sacrifice
US Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will deliver a major speech on the Senate floor at 4 p.m. ET today calling on President Obama to "listen to the overwhelming majority of the American people who believe that deficit reduction must be about shared sacrifice," with the wealthy and large, profitable corporations paying their fair share toward addressing the deficit. You can sign his letter and watch the speech live by going here.

Show AllI'm pretty much opposed to watching video clips (they take too long, and it's much faster to read transcripts) . . . so perhaps someone could tell us whether Sanders spoke to an empty chamber?
The speech is underway, and indeed the chamber looks pretty empty.
Figures. Thanks.
Screw shared sacrifice. I've been sacrificing for 30 years, many of the people here much mroe than that. The rich and powerful can pay for their crap all by themselves this time. And give the rest of us a rebate for thirty years of domestic terror while they're at it.
I like the way you think. :-)
Amen!!! It's more a matter of 'pay up'. I'm still waiting, with my hand out. And I'm not even black or hispanic or third world desperate. All I want is the security to get sick and not be impoverished, and to get old and not sent to the glue factory.
Future generations will look back on Sanders speeches and ask themselves why didn't people listen to him? That is unless all record of him gets a good old 1984 style disappearing...
I do have to admind that I LOL'ed when he said Obama had to stand tall against the Republicans. That line killed me.
I think the people should shoulder the entire burden, and not ask for the elites to share it. When the people realize the burden is theirs they may take action to prevent the burden from accumulating in the first place. They may finally accept that the ball is in their own hands, that the responsibility is in their own hands, the responsibility to manage their economy for their own benefit, instead of leaving it up to the elites. Hilarious! You put the mafia in charge of your economy and then you want the mafia to help you shoulder the ensuing burden! Instead of that, I prefer to break the mafia's back, and I'm going to need the help of a few angry citizens.
LOL! rtdrury...you first. In Rome there was the lectica or sella, the jiao in China, sedan chairs in England, the palanquin in India, the gama in Korea and the tahtirevan in Turkey to name a few. Often poles upon the shoulders were used for the carrying with yokes to redistribute the load. (when the carried were not on horseback) It's pretty damn near impossible to pretend these live in the flesh elites do not exist. Though its a pretty good fantasy. You don't "put" the mob in charge of anything, they put themselves in charge. You ever live in one of them neighborhoods? I'm all for having the masses never purchasing another single product from the elite, ever! What's the plan Stan?
Speech was to the point - citing the causes of the deficit and and Republican bullying.
Sanders has letter to the president posted online and is asking that people sign. In support of Sander's effort I have done so.
Calling for shared sacrifice. As if workers have been getting a share of the benefits.
Everyday the crisis of capitalism becomes more severe, the fake left becomes more grotesquely exposed for the fakes they are.
