Noam Chomsky: “This Is The Most Remarkable Regional Uprising That I Can Remember”
In recent weeks, popular uprisings in the Arab world have led to the ouster of Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the imminent end of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s regime, a new Jordanian government, and a pledge by Yemen’s longtime dictator to leave office at the end of his term. We speak to MIT Professor Noam Chomsky about what this means for the future of the Middle East and U.S. foreign policy in the region. When asked about President Obama’s remarks last night on Mubarak, Chomsky said "Obama very carefully didn’t say anything."

Really, prof. Chomsky? How about 1989 when eastern Europe finally shook off the yoke of communism. Now that was a mejor turn in world history. Oh, never mind, you think communism was a good thing... I guess you are right then.
"Oh, never mind, you think communism was a good thing..."
Wrong. Get outta here with that nonsense. You must not have understood much of what you have read by Noam.
Never mind that the Soviets' was largely a bloodless coup in the world's second most powerful country. Gorbachev and his Communists peacefully acceded to Yeltsin and his brand of Russian nationalism, which soon proved to be the Slavic version of Godfather 6.
For years, the right said that blood would have to flow in the streets before communists anywhere would surrender power, but they were wrong. There were few deaths, and the Communists voluntarily reliquished their power just about everywhere in the Eastern Bloc, save Romania, where our favotite communist dictaor, Caeucescu, was murdered by his own teeming masses.
The number of deaths relative to the amount of power transferred was miniscule. The rigid capitalists were just projecting onto the Communists their own hatred of democracy and their willingness to hold on to capital, property, and privilege at any cost. Hundreds of thousands of people died in the Russian Revolution because of White Russian Resistance fostered by Allied money in 1918 and 1919. Hundreds of thousands more died in Central America in a war waged by American proxies to make sure that socialism as an alternative economy did not gain a foothold in Nicaraugua, El Salvador, or Guatamela. One could argue the same about Cuba, Chile, the Phillipines, and countless other countries in which the forces of the right, allied and financed by imperialist powers, have fought to the death to defend the economic status quo.
That's the way history will interpret it, unless GE, Disney, Time Warner, and Viacom monopolize all the intellectual property rights in this and the Twenty-Second Century.
Ok, so maybe i was a little hard on the good old prof.
In your litany of murders you forgot to mention all the ones ones killed in the Soviet gulag and in Eastern European prisons. Hitler, Pol Pot were amateurs compared to that.
And yes was born in Romania, i was there in Dec 1989 at the fall of Communism. Dec 26 is my birthday. That year, the party started on Dec 25, when Ceausescu was executed. Good riddance to him and even tho i don't believe in heaven or hell i hope he's burning in hell for the rest of eternity together with his wife. More of his acolytes should have had the same fate. Unfortunately it was his 2nd echelon buddies that took power so that didn't happen, unfortunately.
Personally, all those countries you mentioned (Nicaragua, El Salvador, or Guatemala) are way better off.
I would, however, keep my eye on Venezuela.
To finish of on a jolly note:
How do you go from from Capitalism to Socialism? Thru revolution.
How do you go from Socialism to Capitalism. Thru a travel agency.
In my opinion and the opinion of many others around the world,Noam Chomsky has one of the most brilliant minds in the world. He is one of the few people who is intelligent , wise and has common sense. I am glad that I have been on this earth at the same time as Noam Chomsky. If only he had been a President or at least listened to by U.S. leaders. America would be a truly worthy human rights and peace example to the world.
Suddenly, the re-Birth of a Nation. Will all the global 'Thidwicks' shake off their burdens?
Chomsky dismisses all 9-11 truth inquiries.
In other words, he's become apparently too old to handle the tough stuff. His best work, and his true contribution to US and world political discourse occurred before the new millennium, imo.
That wouldn't include "Rethinking Camelot", where he debunks all the posthumous nonsense about JFK as a peacemaking dove, published in 1993. You clearly haven't read and really appreciated Chomsky. He wasn't any different before September 11. If you're waiting for Chomsky to endorse every conspiracy theory that comes along, then stop saying you have respect for his contributions to our understanding of U.S. foreign policy. You people go on, and on, and on, and on about this with him because you're looking for somebody with a name to endorse YOUR IDIOT CULT! He won't do it, and good for him.
ok
Idiot cult??? Really?
You may not have noticed but the events of 9/11/01 have been used to justify the concept of eternal war stretching into infinity. Don't you think such a momentous event deserves the same level of scrutiny seen every day on CSI?
Sneering dismissals aren't good enough to explain the apparent reversals of the laws of physics. You really should fight past your prejudices and at least watch Blueprint for Truth...the video put together by an organization supported by over 1500 architects and building engineers.
There are none so blind as those who will not see...
What percentage of the Amerikan people are watching this remarkable regional uprising on English.aljezerra.net TV? I quess less than 1% and maybe 5% of Amerikans are having a quick look on Al jezzera on the internet. And that is a big part of the problem.
