Show AllWhere has Olberman been for the past two years?
q
"Turning his back on his base" implies that Obama is simply ignoring his base.
Obama has been hostile to his base by promoting actions that work against his base and condemning them when they criticize him.
Obama has taken th eart of blaming the victims to a new height.
I would guess he was like the rest of the progressive movement, "hoping for change we could believe in". Well it isn't happening and Olberman continues to take a principled position. He called a spade, a spade and made very clear that Obama has sold out the American working class. The movement needs to shift gears, drop any support for Obama and work for a new political movement to carry on the class struggle. Every step forward and yes, step backwards, educates the working class further and moves it closer to its ultimate mission - the doing away with the capitalist system.
quickstepper,
We were many steps ahead of Olbermann. We knew this sob is a diehard Obama. We completely turn off MSNBS even before the end of Democratic party primaries. There are a few dickheads in MSNBC, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddog...
Good morning Keith Olberman, welcome on board.
Whoa! That was good. Really good.
Can anyone help me with a difficult question? I apparently can’t attach a photo here, but the lettering across the back of my car asks this question in large type: “WIMP or LIAR?” I’m having trouble deciding where Obama falls. There are certainly strong arguments for each, and some say both apply. Tough choice.
By the way, after 43 years of voting in every election for liberal Dems, I’m now done with this limp and corrupt party. Unfortunately, that means I have another difficult decision to make: 1) support the Greens or some other 3rd party; 2) opt out of political involvement and voting entirely; or 3) work and vote for the Repugs under the assumption that the sooner this country is brought to its knees, the sooner it can be rebuilt with some integrity and compassion. Tough choice.
For you personally you should vote for what you believe. That is what I do, I voted 3rd party at every section of Government, Local all the way up. Because I understand how government works.
For some reason most of the people on CD, feel like if Nader, or McKinney, etc. Gets in the Whitehouse things will be fine. They are delusional and have no idea what they are talking about. This is why I get so mad, every time I come here. People here want an echo chamber, let’s all sit around and talk about how Obama sold out yada yada.
535 people make laws, 9 Justices review and support or not support those laws based on the constitution (usually). How many of those individuals are progressive? How many of those individuals care about the people more than the corps? How many? Not a lot we know.
So somehow, a Progressive president is supposed to magically change the world? NO!
It is not going to happen. WAKE THE HELL UP! Obama is not the country’s major problem, Obama hasn't written a single law. Obama hasn't completed a single Judicial Review of a court case. Did you see what happened when Obama even mentioned a public option for instance? Do you see what happened to that bill? Do you remember? What do you think would happen with an even more progressive idea? It would be torn apart. I don’t know what world you all live in. I would have so much more respect for you all if you spoke about the system as a whole. But just bashing Obama every article for 88 posts, is just silly. And shows how fractured we on the left really are.
O Rei de Reis, Of course you're right. It certainly was great to hear Olberman talk this way tho. I wish the whole country could hear his words! It's a start at least. For those unaware of the issues...to hear Olberman say what he just said would be like dropping a megaton explosive device on their heads!
Another thing that I have always found infuriating is the way that the calls for voting Green reach a fever pitch every time an election rolls around, but then, after the election (after one of the two corporate parties wins, obviously) you hear nothing but crickets when it comes to actually building a viable alternative to this system. There is no real movement-building going on, no coordinated campaign to open the system so that third parties stand a fighting chance, not even any rallies or protests taking place these days. It's just complete silence coming from the left, with the exception of a few websites like this one. When election time comes around in a year and a half though, all you will hear is "vote Nader or you are a sell-out and a dupe." It's sad, in a way, to watch this play out year after year.
Great post by the way.
"... after the election (after one of the two corporate parties wins, obviously) you hear nothing but crickets..."
Amen.
Thanks for dropping in!
"They are delusional and have no idea what they are talking about."
We could start by having a leader that would stand up to the status-quo. A body with a spine instead of a bag of Jello on quivering legs. A leader who would fight for the working class instead of the criminals he said he'd fight against.
No one is delusional here. Its clear no one man can do everything, but a good leader can lead, and people can follow.
If you think we're gonna fill congress with enough 535 progressives and change the SCOTUS, then it is you who is delusional.
It is Obama who is to blame. The man is a liar. The man is a murderer. The man is the walking definition of a sellout. The man is THE American Style Capitalist President who will do whatever necessary to keep those now in charge, in-charge; of the Fed, of the MIC, of high finance and our health system. The man has done exactly what GWB would have done. We have had three terms now of this little asshole that isn't even on the scene. THREE TERMS of GWB. Count 'em: 1-2-3.
Electing independent congressmen/women is wonderful. Great. You've got 50 state elections to overcome. But electing an bonafied leader at the top hasn't happened yet.
And its a damn sight easier than trying to elect 525 ones.
As for Olbermann, lots of talk. Perhaps he's sincere. But appearing sincere is part of his job (like Obama), and like both, the numbers are down for both of them. I suspect Olbermann knows what the truth is, and that is our first black president will not seek another term. So from here on out, its damage control for the democratic party in lieu of the coming election in 2012.
Just speculation of course.
'They are delusional and have no idea what they are talking about'
Yeah right. I mean if the Green Party got elected the stock market would probably instantly crash as punishment for voting the wrong way in a democratic election.
It was great to see Olberman getting all fired up again. I haven't watched TV in probably over 3 years. Millions of Americans deserve and desperately need to hear that speech.
The answer to your rhetorical bumper sticker question is BOTH, Jim.
Obama angers his base at his own peril. He's risking completely losing any political support and further weakening himself as if he's not already operating from a position of weakness now, which he most certainly is. We can all sit here and kvetch and complain, but a National Day of Action is hereby called for. Flood the White House comment line (202-456-1111) with angry comments. Write to the White House on their web site ("Contact Us") and do so in such heavy numbers that it overwhelms their server.
Our voices need to be heard. WE, after all, run this country, and Washington is supposed to work for US, not the corporate masters. Let's let them remember who put them there in the first place. That's you, me and everyone else who voted for them. SPEAK UP! I'm hereby calling for a National Day of Action to protest this, and if enough of us take action, they MUST listen to us. Action, folks, speaks louder than words!
"He's risking completely losing any political support.."
Wrong at least 86% of the Black still defending and will continue to support him. AMEN!
Whatever. As soon as blacks realized that Snobama wasn't the second coming of MLK and that he wasn't going to do a goddamned thing to help repair the issues that fracture the black community, they've been leaving in droves. See, most of my people aren't politically overt. Protesting and things like that, traditionally, have only brought asswhippings and more trouble. Also, to my eternal sorrow, we tend to stand behind strong leaders and we have a serious dearth of those. But, quietly, black folk have said 'Fuck Obama'. Just watch and see how much support he gets in 2012.
As for the question, "What do we do now?", the answer is simple. Get with the families around you and create your own strong economies and communities. If you need examples, examine the Amish or the anarchist communities during the Spanish Civil War. This behemoth of an empire needs to die. Let the fools keep electing crooks and keep buying plastic shit from "Wally World". Be smart and savvy. Trade time with your neighbors and encourage them to do the same for you. This isn't hard, folks. Government is a fictional construct. Community is the reality and has been for millions of years for the genus Homo.
Server, shmerver. Yeah, they have to "listen" but they don't have to act.
You are mistaking emailing and calling for action. Neither are.
You are in denial.
And "we" don't run this country.
Breathtaking! His words and emotions are the same as mine. This may be theater, but I love it. If only Mr. Obama were somehow forced to listen and to be convinced that THIS was the voice of the PEOPLE!
Barack Obama knows what the left thinks and says, and doesn't care. He used the left to get elected and promptly disposed of it like used toilet paper. He's actually a right winger masquerading as a "liberal". He despises the left and most everyone else. He's just a calculating sociopathic liar, out for himself only.
Forget this "left" business--Obama doesn't care about MAIN STREET either.
BTW, many issues described as "left" (used to marginalize) are mainstream issues--such as ending the wars, Medicare for all, etc.
Barack Obama should resign the Presidency on 31 December and, in the new year, represent some Illinois district as a back bench Republican Congressman.
Obama should be replaced by Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Trylon
Obama no longer has a base.
Obama no longer has a base.
I wish that were true, however, I inhabit a world populated with Obamabots who will never stop rationalizing every devious action Obama takes.
Agreed. Yes, he has pissed off many former supporters, but by and large, when push comes to shove and his "former" supporters have to choose between, say, Palin and Obama, they will hold their noses and vote for Obama.
He may have seriously ticked off his base, but they - being typical loyal-to-my-team-to-the-end mindsets, like most Americans - will NEVER think of voting for a 3rd party candidate "because that would be like giving votes to the Republicans." They will never notice or admit that there is NO DIFFERENCE between Dems and Repugs, and they CERTAINLY will not vote their conscience rather than their favorite team. Heaven forbid.
So yeah - Obama's base is still behind him, even if they are only behind him as the lesser-of-two-evils. And you know what? OBAMA KNOWS THIS. He probably giggles himself to sleep every night at the fact he can bend his supporters over and rape them repeatedly, and yet still get a lot of their votes in 2012, because he is "better than Palin" (somehow).
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross."
So yeah - Obama's base is still behind him, even if they are only behind him as the lesser-of-two-evils. And you know what? OBAMA KNOWS THIS.
Yeah, but he's only half way through his term and look how much damage he has done. Even Keith Olberman is starting to get pissed. If more famous people in the media start denouncing Obama then it could change public opinion. But they also need to start talking about third party candidates. That would be kind of a miracle.
Good post--and funny too.
Bush left office with I think a firm base of 20% or so Bushies. Unfortunately I think there are still more than 20% of O-bot. I could be wrong. They could just be a very loud, ugly 20% -- like the Tea Party crowd. All I know is that I just read comments on Maddow's FB page (which I have liked) and the O-bots were out in force and turning their anger on Maddow, who also did a very nice piece on this last night. I guess they were back to back, because the O-bots were still frothing at the mouth over Olbermann's comment. Oh, well. There will always be a cult following of O-bots. The ones that will finally throw in the towel will be those that say this: "I hate what he's doing but he still has my support" -- something along those lines, which is kind of twisted. And there are still many comments to the tune of "he has something up his sleeve" (some of those chess pieces, perhaps?) Reagan, Clinton and George and, of course, Obama -- all have cult followings.
This video is awesome. Let's start cheering for what is good. Criticism of a slow-learning curve isn't helpful.
Get a grip. Its TV. And its not just TV, its GE TV.
Yeah, its "awesome". Yeah, Olbermann will show 'em!
He needs viewers. Olbermann, Maddow, Beck, they ALL need viewers ...and the cash from advertising goes right into the coffers of The Man. Then they all sit back, sip a martini and have a good laugh.
Turn 'em off.
Obama angering his base is all by design. It has been planned all along so Democratic voters, as dumb as they are, "angry", will stay home allowing a Republican takeover in 2012.
Obama is a war criminal, an accomplice and a con-artist. The ruling elite would never allow a real community organizer to take power from the Bush Crime Family if he weren't one of them, what's wrong with you people? Some of us saw through it when the uncle tom made his speech at the convention that chose Senator John Coward, I mean, Kerry way back in 2004. Blind fools.
As for Olberman, he's an entertainer. He offers nothing but cheap theater. He'll never EVER state the truth, that Democrats and Republicans have always been the same and American voters have always been fooled by both. He works for GE, that should be enough for someone with 10 brain cells that nothing coming out of his mouth is anywhere close to the truth.
delia, perhaps you are a little too FAR ahead of my learning curve of consciousness raising?
....I've stopped paying for cable TV a few months ago, but seeing Keith's "performance" here on CD made me feel nostalgic: WHY: He's Giving a Great Show!!!! More!! Yes, this is how he makes his living. But isn't he "on your side?"
Olberman's is on the side of GE, who signs his paychecks. He sells the illusion that we have two parties in the US and Americans have a choice. And many fools are still buying it.
Amen.
I agree, but he was spot on with this special comment.
Delia,
Thank you.
well said
First off, where to you get off calling John Kerry a coward? Have you been in a war, been shot at, seen friends die yet he still had the moral compass to advocate for its immediate end in front of Congress?
Regarding the dems & the pubs being the same: you're spot on! My vision for election funding is this; In the UK, all political advertising is illegal on media such as TV. Instead politicians actually go door to door & rely exclusively on political rallies. They don't have to sell their souls to the highest bidder for funds to support Madison Ave propaganda TV ads that have NOTHING to do with the issues but either rely on fear, half-truths or total mis-information or ridiculous "warm& fuzzy" ads meant to reassure us that "I won't raise taxes" or "I will create jobs" with sweet images totally lacking in content.
Better to pass a Constitutional Amendment reversing not JUST SCOTUS's latest fiasco but making all paid political ads in the media illegal. Yeah, I know this violates several Bill of Rights Amendments but it's the ONLY way to take back our gov't & politicians from the ultra-rich elites, corporations & unions who have bought them. We would have to fight the elites, the ACLU, & networks who would panic at the loss of billions & other libertarians who naively believe that The Constitution, written in the 18th century, doesn't need major revamping to take back gov't & make the politicians again accountable to us & not just give us pablum for ads. An amendment can trump all other amendments, SCOTUS, POTUS and Congress. It is the people's ultimate referendum!
Also, in the UK lobbying & being a lobbyist is illegal. Wouldn't it be nice if our pols heard our voice & not the voice of the last chief of staff who was willing to "grease the palms" of the elected official.
These abuses have been going on for too long & is getting worse every election cycle. We haven't lived in a true democracy in over a century. LET US TAKE IT BACK! Let's organize! Is anyone awake out there?
You mean Senator Kerry, the same who surrendered the election to Bush in 04 even before all votes had been counted, when all evidence pointed to FRAUD in Ohio, the same clown who conceded so fast even his running mate was disgusted? Yes, Senator Kerry's a COWARD.
As for his war record, he's still a COWARD. I wonder how many unarmed, innocent civilians he killed in Vietnam. He was a contract killer for the US Gov at the time and a participant (willing or not, with purple heart or without) in an illegal, insane and murderous war.
Speaking truth to power on MSM. Outstanding!
Obama will respond to the left only if he reckons it is powerful enough to threaten his presidency. If he sees the left as a a small, mostly rhetorical bunch of complainers he will dismiss them. Daschle has already told us this is why he dismissed Single Payer and Public Option. No more appeals for Obama to change. Either we mount a credible challenge within the party via primary or leave the party and make his followers suffer a defeat in the general by running a third party candidate whether a Republican wins or not. That's it. Those are our options if we are strong enough to exercise them. If we are not strong enough we will be swept along by events not of our liking. In protest we can stand with the 99ers outside the capitol and see if they will shoot at or gas us, I have no doubt they will. This is not our country anymore.
Obama doesn't need us,
We don't need him!

This is just a small step to tell prominent progressives that
*we are here*
*we are ready to organize*
*its time to come together around valid goals*
Let people know there is a movement forming!
There ought to be a neo-noose law against bribing (buying) a politician.
From Obama's 'Blast the Left' speech on PBS News Hour, aired yesterday December 7, 2010 (with my critique in parentheses):
(reporter) JEFFREY BROWN:
But the president firmly rejected criticism from those on the left that he betrayed his core principles. It's a critique, he said, he's faced before.
BARACK OBAMA:
This is the public option debate all over again.
{Obama begins his attempt to change the subject and simultaneously falsify the "health care" bill as a grand historical success--a view little shared outside Team Obama--metal}
So, I pass a signature piece of legislation, where we finally get health care for all Americans, something that Democrats had been fighting for, for a hundred years, but, because there was a provision in there that they didn't get that would have affected maybe a couple of million people, even though we got health insurance for 30 million people and the potential for lower premiums for 100 million people, that, somehow, that was a sign of weakness and compromise.
{The devil certainly is in the details on this remark--most of which have yet to be played out in the "free market," but notice he says the POTENTIAL for lower premiums for 100 million people--not actual lower premiums themselves, since there is no public option to compete with private insurance to drive down prices--metal}
Now, if that's the standard by which we are measuring success or core principles, then let's face it: We will never get anything done.
{Sheer sophistry he's using as a crutch to self-excuse his friable policy non-solutions that are characteristically front-loaded with damaging concessions to corporations. Even a cursory glimpse at historical Democratic presidential policy successes from 1933 to 1968 disproves this--metal}
People will have the satisfaction of having a purist position and no victories for the American people. And we will be able to feel good about ourselves and sanctimonious about how pure our intentions are and how tough we are, and in the meantime, the American people are still seeing themselves not able to get health insurance because of preexisting condition, or not being able to pay their bills because their unemployment insurance ran out.
{Let's examine this by inverting it to more accurately reflect his position, shall we?
I will have the satisfaction of having a corrupt position and corrupt victories for American corporations. And I will be able to feel good about myself and sanctimonious about how corrupt my intentions are and how weak I am perceived to be by the public (when that's a very useful, deliberate affectation), and in the meantime, the American health insurance companies are still seeing themselves resisting the extension of health insurance pay-outs using any ploy or price gouge they can get away with, and beefing up their already bloated bottom line with the 30 million citizens my DLC Congress-abetted bill drove into their clutches--metal}
And I don't think there's a single Democrat out there who, if they looked at where we started when I came into office and look at where we are now, would say that somehow we have not moved in the direction that I promised. Take a tally. Look at what I promised during the campaign. There's not a single thing that I have said that I would do that I have not either done or tried to do. And if I haven't gotten it done yet, I'm still trying to do it.
{Here Obama is issuing a mock challenge to the equally corrupt corporatist, militarist "news" media to examine and expose his dismally corporatist, militarist record, which he knows they will never do because he's buttered too many of their key sponsors' bread. His flip-flops on his campaign promises & assertions are so numerous I can't even recollect them all: Re-negotiating the "free trade" treaties to include labor and environmental protections and initially saying he was against warrantless surveillance were just two of them that come to mind--metal}
And -- and so the -- to my Democratic friends, what I would suggest is, let's make sure that we understand this is a long game. This is not a short game.
{It's a long game to gut Social Security and condition the public to 18% real unemployment or worse as the new norm--plus future "austerity measures" to come--inflicted on the poorest and most vulnerable Americans while the bipartisan fascist machine moves heaven and earth to promote war simultaneous with historically unprecedented wartime tax cuts for the super-rich and to protect Wall Street criminals and other crony corporations--metal}
And to my Republican friends, I would suggest, I think this is a good agreement, because I know that they're swallowing some things that they don't like as well. And I'm looking forward to seeing them on the field of competition over the next two years.
{What things are the Republicans swallowing that they don't like? Thirteen months of unemployment benefit extensions while the super-rich get two YEARS of wartime tax cut extensions? Piss poor trade-off under any evaluation--metal}

Helluva knockout analysis, thank you!
Cicero: "Freedom is participation in power."
Glad you liked it. You might also like my dissection of the new Team Obama/Bernanke meme that 'long-term unemployment is caused by lack of education reform' that I have also posted above as comments on the subject of Olberman's video.
Pleasure to read, metal. Thanks for taking the time, and also listening to Obama's "speech". I have a very hard time doing that without getting very upset.
Thanks, metal, a fine analysis.
Were I Obama, healthcare is certainly not an example I would have raised to highlight my negotiation prowess. Here you go, suckers, a little salt for your wounds!
==> "a provision in there that they didn't get that would have affected maybe a couple of million people" A couple of million people?? The heart and soul of healthcare reform, the only possible leverage and a massive concession from single-payer he reduces to a relatively incidental "provision in there". At the same time he conveniently neglects to mention the mandates that break an explicit campaign pledge---the fines he levies if you refuse to buy the insurance racket's deliberately-defective product. This guy makes Machiavelli look good. There must be Yiddish word for a creep like this. Schmageggy, perhaps?
You've got to give him credit: the SOB really knows how to insult his base. One can hardly wait to hear the petulant pouting he will evince when his former base militates against his foreordained dismantling of Social Security. That ought to be a theatrical act in wounded self-righteous indignation and martyrdom. Yuck, what an odious weasel (with due apologies to weasels)!
There's no way this guy is dimwitted enough to buy his own spin. This is calculated betrayal. Thanks for making his imperial vestments more transparent for us.
You hit a home run with this one, Keith.
Joe
