Drug Money: The Unhealthy Profit of Big Pharma
The US healthcare industry is the world's biggest, with $300bn per year spent on prescription drugs.
For many these drugs have brought undeniable benefits.
But recent months have seen health scandal after health scandal making headlines in the US.
Two of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies have been fined
billions of dollars after investigations into their secret working
practices.
What these cases have revealed will change the way the drug industry is perceived forever.
Revelations have emerged of pervasive fraud, fatal side effects, and huge kick-backs paid to doctors.
This investigation by Melanie Newman and Chris Woods reveals how healthcare became unhealthy profit.

Show AllIt's nice to know that the U.S. Government is "fighting back," as our members of Congress take millions and millions from BigPharma, and then there's Obama's unholy alliance in HCR.
Drug companies are merging to assure that they become too big to fail so they can get even more corporate welfare than they already do.
This shouldn't be surprise to many, at least to those who know how FDA works and who it is made up of. There is big revolving door between FDA and Big Pharma and now they are adding new generation of Doctors, Academic Researchers.
God knows what is going to happen to the patients, or at least they- this bunch knows what they are doing to them !!
The greatest evil of capitalism is best evident in the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry, the defense industry, and Wall Street. But, as a nation, we are willing to turn a blind eye to these industries because we love how most other corporations "improve" our lives with an unsustainable consumer lifestyle.
Democracy and capitalism are incompatible. You either have a culture of predatory capitalism or a culture based upon vibrant, honest participatory democracy. You cannot have both.
The choice is between a vibrant democracy, taught by our schools, universities and churches, or we can essentially face the collapse of civilization.
SVR: I concur. It's a good example of Orwell's Doublethink.
I question if our schools, especially public ones, and especially now, are part of the solution. I recall a PSA on the local (ATL) NPR station (which I now only listen to late at night for the music) where then state superintendent of schools, Linda Shrenko (sp?) proudly declaimed about her job to turn "today's students into the consumers of tomorrow." I'm a bachelor and it stopped me in my tracks. Adding television and no child left behind to the mix render many unable to make critical, informed choices which are essential to a vibrant democracy. I'll let others address the efficacy of universities and churches.
Peace.
Consumers. I HATE that term. It's WAY too close to the rightie's favorite term for some of us, "useless eaters". We are no longer CITIZENS in a community or country, we are just those who spend.
W's advice to everyone to "go shopping" after 9-11, when we were all asking what we could do was absolutely pathetic. It removed ALL of us from CITIZENSHIP and made us all just useless spenders. I preferred being a citizen, to be honest, and I still do.
If I were you, I would write this miscreant a letter calling her to task for he inability to see what side of this country she is on. I have no doubt that she is a corporatist, but she is disenfranchising the entire next generations of CITIZENS.
I spit on the world consumer. I think every American should bristle and spit at it as well.
"I spit on the world consumer".
I agree: "Consumer" - the word itself sounds like spitting, and offends me whenever I hear it used in the media.
A word that will live in infamy when (and if) we can ever look back.
It is equivalent to cannibalism. The culture that consumes itself and all life it comes in contact with.
What can each of us do to fight Big Pharma?
The answer is simple: avoid using their products.
While certain folks such as diabetics have no choice but to use insulin, far too many people use pharmaceuticals because (a) they haven't taken care of themselves and (b) they're convinced that the best way to deal with life's stresses is to take a pill.
If the majority of adults in the US ate properly, exercised regularly, and developed simple tools to cope with stress (e.g. meditation), Big Pharma's revenues would drop by at least 80%.
So take care of yourself already. Good health is a stake in the heart of this racket.
q
The food industry is insuring that more and more of us will need drugs by selling more and more diabetes-causing food products each year that have resulted in a skyrocketing increase in the number of diabetes cases.
I am one of the few people I know who reads ingredients labels and have noticed that hundreds of products that contained no sugar 10 years ago now contain sugar.
raydelcam: good for the dental industry. On second thought, maybe not. People who have access to dental care can afford it and are more apt to make better choices.
Tobacco is a similar scenario, IMO.
Peace.
"..noticed that hundreds of products that contained no sugar 10 years ago now contain sugar".
If they could put Methadone in the Corporate Kibble to keep us addicted they would!
i'm with you on the 'few'...........
the crap that's included in processed foods/drinks is unbelievable......
but then i'm vegan, so don't buy any packaged/ready-made food/cakes/cookies etc. (only pastas/rice/beans/pulses - and they can't do a lot to them)
it's amazing that most people don't even know what gelatine is made from.............
and forget asperteme and msg............
Try eating properly on part-time minimum-wage or food stamps.
That's easy. Learn to cook.
You can make many highly nutritious and tasty meals from basic foodstuffs if you just know how to prepare food. Fresh green and root vegetables are not that expensive.

it's an alternative to medicines for diabetes.............
apparently it works............
i'm not an advocate as i don't have diabetes.........
but it's worth a try for anyone who might be subject to the disease....
While this is a good expose, it only scratches the surface of the problem, which is endemic throughout the medical community and big pharma. The Hippocratic Oath has become as meaningless as ethics at Goldman-Sachs for the vast majority of doctors. Yes, doctors will strive to keep their patients alive as long as possible, and they may think this a noble thing, but the fact is that sick patients are quite profitable. Pharmaceuticals with iatrogenic effects are especially profitable, as their dire effects call for more and more meds, each countering the other’s side effects. This may seem paranoid, and I’m sure few doctors have ever consciously looked at their practice in this fashion, but when one looks at the facts—such as the reality that few doctors take the long view and consider the harm their prescriptions are doing, either alone or in combination, and the fact that pharmaceutical testing is done through big pharma’s direction, which avoids studies that might uncover such problems—I cannot reach any other conclusion.
Lewis Morris’s aim to get pharma CEOs and other top-ranking executives complicit in lethal drugs removed from their jobs just isn’t nearly enough. Unless they are charged with mass murder and dealt with accordingly, nothing will change, and we all know that’s not going to happen. The solution is not lawsuits or reforming the FDA. The only solution is starving the beast. Look into alternative therapies, eat a diet centered on whole grains and vegetables, exercise. Avoid the doctor, and if you do end up needing medical care, research the hell out of any drug you are prescribed before putting it in your mouth. Research alternatives to any surgery recommended. Anyone who takes a doctor's advice without question these days is a fool. Your suffering is their cash cow--that's how the system is set up. And if you don't know that, you haven't been paying attention.
Much of this video deals with psychiatry. Having suffered under psychiatric care and knowing many who have withered and died under it, I urge everyone to read Robert Whitaker’s newest book, Anatomy of an Epidemic. I’ve been posting this whenever and wherever I can, and while I don’t mean to bore people, this book contains carefully researched proof that psychiatry is doing far more harm than good. Exposing this fact is only the first step, and Whitaker has done an excellent job. Again, starving the beast is the only answer. Look for alternatives to psychiatric meds and enact lifestyle changes. Educate yourself. The best cure for mental pain is active empathy, and that’s the last thing you’ll get from the psychiatric profession.
We had our close friends mate, who is a psychiatrist, over for dinner the other night he stated that all they are is pill pushers now. No one does any real therapy, either psychological or consciousness enhancing, just the drugs as it is so much more profitable. As others have stated, just treat the symptoms and get back to work.
Elizabeth, I agree with almost all you say. I've been out side the medical and dietary mainstream ever sense the late 60's when I was a hippy. The big factor is one must be able to change his lifestyle or at least have superior genetic makeup to avoid the weakened condition that sick food, negative environmental factors, lack of physical activity, and allopathic medicines bring on. If you don't make the changes these extreme medications, surgeries and various other stimulants are about the only thing that will get you through..... at least until they kill you.
We know big pharma is the real "Pusher Man" and that only the U.S. and New Zealand allow direct advertising to the consumer and this in itself probably got more to do with the abuse of drugs, both legal and illegal, then any other factor because it reinforces the belief that we do not have to change behavior, but rather, just take a pill
Next time you feed that psychiatrist, stir a good amount of neuroleptics into his tofu scramble for me.
No, seriously, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. But I despair at the sociopathy of the mental “health” industry. Whitaker notes that since the psychiatrists have embraced the idea that mental distress is a biological condition, “like diabetes,” we have seen an epidemic of mental illness, to the point, as Whitaker points out, that one out of 45 working age USians are presently on disability for mental illness. If the psychiatrists’ aim is to medicate people and get them back to work, they are obviously failing. Instead, they are turning episodic illnesses into chronic ones.
However, that biochemical model of theirs makes them feel like “real doctors.” It makes them lots of money. How they sleep at night is beyond me.
How does Big Pharma account for the millions of pills being sold on the streets? Is there no inventory? Please explain!!
Repeal "Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act" (more commonly know by Medicare Part D)signed by Bush.
This bill prohibits Medicare from negotiating discounts on drug prices. If Medicare negotiated an average discount of just 20% it would save seniors $250 billion over the ten year period covered by the bill.
The bill is graft of public money to drug company CEOs, executives and their lobbyists.
It's time to call a spade a spade.
In the case of Vioxx, 9 of the 15 FDA physician reviewers were receiving consulting fees from the manufacturer. They of course approved the drug. What is it about conflict of interest do we not understand?
But of course, when your own congress does exactly the same thing when it passes laws, what else should we expect?

Remember the Swine Flu scare... somebody call the cops. Manslaughter/Murder has taken place.
A Third Of The Experts Advising The World Health Organization About The Swine Flu Pandemic Had Ties To Drugs Firms
By Sophie Borland
"...Five of the 15 specialists who sat on the emergency committee had received funding from pharmaceutical giants, or were linked to them through their research..."

Search for Medical Veratis/vaccinations and population control if you really want to be scared. I have emailed that article to many websites and news corps to no avail. Very scary if true.
Our entire ‘Insurance Care’ industry should be nationalized.
All drugs should be developed with our (government) money, and then released as generics.
The military uses our government money and seems to thrive. Wouldn't scientists also thrive? Or, are the banks only accepting corporate money now, like the politicians?
Check the top 25 defrauders of the taxpayers at Taxpayers Against Fraud www.taf.org and tell me if you see a trend here.
It seems to be running in the veins...shyster whenever, wherever for as long as not caught. A good example of the "me first" mentality.
Here are a few things to consider. Medicine in this country USED to be about CURES. Now, it's not, it's about hiding the symptoms (largely so you can go back to work before you're really well). There isn't a single drug they make anymore that cures a damned thing. They discovered back then they CURED polio that suddenly there was no continuing money from CURING things. They have done literally at least a trillion dollars worth of research on MS, for instance, just to choose one off the top of my head. We didn't spend that much on the atomic bomb, but they STILL haven't made that break through that will CURE the damned disease. MD? How long has Jerry Lewis been doing that labor day telethon? bout 45 years, now? How much longer will it take before they actually CURE the thing?
They have NO intention of curing any disease EVER again. There is much more money in masking symptoms, you can keep people hooked on horrible things for the rest of their lives. Who CARES if the disease actually ultimately kills you, you had no symptoms!
This is NOT medicine. This is drug pushing. It should NOT be allowed in this or any other society.
And for the record, the last stat I saw on this topic says that prescription drugs kill 200,000 Americans EVERY YEAR. That is just not an acceptable figure to me. And it shouldn't be to anyone else, either. Oh, and also for the record, cannabis has been used for over 4700 years for MANY of the things that these murderous pills are used for, and has never been involved in a single human death. Why do you think they are so against it? It sure aint' for your health!
If you want to really scare yourself, look through the PDR (Physician's Desktop Reference) sometime. It's a listing of every drug used in "modern medicine", the uses and side effects (contraindications). The VAST majority of these drugs can cause VERY serious side effects, most including DEATH (If this pill kills you, cease taking it IMMEDIATELY or serious results could occur).
They call it "traditional" medicine, now, but we've only been pill popping for about 100 years or so. Traditional medicine USED to CURE things. Now, we don't, and we call THIS traditional medicine, with everything that USED to be medicinal in nature now being "alternative" medicine. I'll take that alternative over this lifelong slavery to the pharma companies ANY day.
I trust a street pusher selling me a quarter ounce of weed FAR more than I trust these pill pushing scum. At least the street pusher isn't trying to tell me I'm his only hope for survival.
Yep! Same with vitamins and essential oils. Why do you think the drug companies have pushed Waxman so long to destroy that industry. Instead of the flu shot, I double my vitaman D and others. No cure for cancer either. Here is a device made in Russia that is very hard to get here. www.invet.org. Anyone interested in this device, do not buy the cheaper ones on the market. Very dangerous. I had back pain for 10 years. One tx and it was good.
I won't take the meds or the shots. The video said that they were going after the exs. Anyone believe that? Like Massey and all the othe corrupt people that should be in jail? Starting with our own government, including Congress and the FDA. Letting all that poisonous crap first in the dog food then kids food and in our containers. Big Pharma is not the only crook that needs to be in jail. I believe they all should be shot at dawn. Especially those in our government that LET them get away with it. Watch you vet too. They are just as guilty pushing to. Just ask my dawg.
WJM, great post. I heartily concur. Same with AIDS, cancer, etc.
Joe cool9, IMO going after the execs is just a bandaid, so the government can look like it's doing something.
Peace everybody.
'the constant gardener' by john le carre is an insight into the big pharma deviousness in africa...........
Great advice, Coco.
Anything by John Le Carré, who was himself a British spy, provides and insight into reality. In one of his books (and movies) he refers to 'the theater of the real'.
My favorites are 'Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy' and 'Smiley's People'. They were both made into television movies by the BBC and are available on CD. The work done in the movies by Alec Guinness is superb! It seems you can actually read his mind.
'Tinker Taylor' is now being remade by an award winning Swedish director. Check out johnlecarre.com
thanks for the links/info whenthen......................
If folks would just go back to eating real food, you wouldn't need the pills or the doctors. We could put em' all outa business.
A side effect no one mentions is the pollution these pills cause. In municipal water the unmetablolized ingredients pass into drinking water and are not filtered out. Birthcontrol pills are responsible for changing the secondary sexual characteristics of amphibians and well the male species are being feminised. This is one tiny example, prozac anyone, if you live in a metropolitian area chances are you drinking it in your morning coffee.
At one point one of our political morons actually proposed to Congress that Prozac be put into our water supply.
