The Pentagon's hunting for the sources behind the biggest leak in U.S. military history. The whistle-blowing website Wikileaks published some ninety thousand classified documents exposing cover-ups over the war in Afghanistan. Phyllis Bennis from the Washington Institute for Policy Studies provides her perspective on the latest Pentagon scandal and its consequences.

Show AllWe are tired of seeing our young people killed and maimed in wars that profit some at the expense of all.
Yeah, but just how tired to we have to get before we do something about it? I say: some of this energy we spend on war should be directed at the real terrorists--those that profit from it financially. When will the human race grow up and rid itself of those maniacs who amass great wealth and power at the expense of the species. It's time for revolution, not war.
I wonder if we'll ever see anything from Wikileaks that would incriminate the Bush Administration for its role in 911.
Probably never--or at least not until the history books are re-written by a just and equitable society. I always say, look to where the money or power goes, and there you will find the culprit. It takes no stretch of the imagination to see that 9/11 was the neo-conservative's Pearl Harbor. Our country has always tended towards totalitarianism, but just look at how much more so since 9/11. Those up-tight creeps who worship the flag and America right or wrong have been having a field day ever since.
As in Southeast Asia forty and more years ago:
"We lost the day we started and we win the day we stop."
When you find yourself fighting mightily to "win" the lowest spot in the septic tank, it makes more sense to "lose" that battle as soon as possible so that someone else can "win" the dubious contest.
There. That puts America's "winning" and "losing" in the proper perspective. Not that America's fuck-up-and-move up political/military "leadership" has the slightest inclination towards accepting and acting upon this common-sense understanding.
I always knew that my friends who died in Vietnam died for nothing. But this generation of feckless fools just has to keep rubbing salt in the still open wound.
Michael,
I am sorry your friends died for nothing.
Feckless fools indeed.
Let's see, don't I remember Obama promising a more transparent government? Well, maybe my memory is failing. How is Obama's administration hiding the failure of Afghanistan any different from Bush lying to us about Iraq? The truth is, corporate American wants a war going on at all times--it's so good for business. And what corporate America want's, corporate America gets. Obama knows who butters his bread. If any one fails to realize this, there are plenty of glaring examples. America is based on corruption, not democracy. That's why there MUST be a total change in our form of government. In our case, the baby needs too be thrown out with the bath-water. The baby is a monster.
George,
Indeed.
C :)
The Afghan files hid an immoral criminal action, not just a losing war. 90%+ of all classification is to hide either embarrassing or downright criminal acts.
George, get a life. You and I are not going to "do something about it." Cheney/Bush got us into the mess by selling a heap of lies to the congress. The war will end when it ends. They should bring up the people who leaked this information on charges. This is old stuff, has nothing to do with transparency. Why don't YOU go get Pakistan on our side.
It's still going on--records go to Jan 2010-- and whilst Bush/Cheney started these wars, Obama has been all too eager to keep the wars going-- to feed the MIC. Obama has broken record for war spending too. In fact Obama has out-droned Bush after one year in office in comparison to Bush's last term.
Obamabots-- it's high time you open your eyes as this is Bush's 3rd term!
Your Puppet in Chief is just as bad as Bush!
And by the way, these leakers are HEROS.
The truth beats Bush/Cheney/Obama lies.
These so-called Wikileadks aren't worth the space devoted to them here, in the press, or on TV and radio news.
It, like anything that casts a negative light on our attempt to take over the world will be swept under the rug without a trace remaining.
Hope y'all caught Ann Curry's interview with VP Joe Biden on yesterday morning's "Today Show. I only caught an excerpt from it on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" a little while ago.
Joe said that our single-most important reason for being in Afghanistan is to wipe out Al Qaeda and we are not on a government building mission.
Following that statement, they had to suddenly change camera angles as Mr. Biden's nose began to grow out of proportion.
It is believed that following the interview, VP BIden invited Ms. Curry on a snipe hunt
I also firmly believe that Chelsea Clinton's wedding should be postponed. As her mother, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (aka "Bubba's Bitch") is so adamant regarding the need for our presence in Afghanistan, it is only fair that her only daughter be sent there in a military capacity, along with the sons or daughters of all Congressional members who are of age to serve our country.
Amd you thought Thursday morning was gonna be boring
Ms. Bennis,
Well said.
