Progressive Democrats Take a Stand on Health Care
Some members of Congress are going to fight for a robust public option and a single-payer amendment
An amendment introduced by representative Anthony Weiner, which would
have created national single payer, has been traded in for a vote on
the House floor in September, as a part of the deal between liberal and
conservative members of the Democratic Party. The case - in support of
single payer - made by some Democrats during the mark-up echoed the
speeches given at a rally, which took place in the Upper Senate Park on
Thursday, July 30th. That same day a number of members of the
Congressional Progressive Caucus held a press conference on the Capitol
Hill where they announced their intent to fight for a robust public
option. The Real News spoke to David Swanson from Democrats.com who
attended both the rally and the press conference.

Show AllNON-PROFIT HEALTH INSURANCE CO-OP ? ? ?
It is high time for Americans to figure out a way to establish a citizen owned-and-operated health insurance company.....in a format like credit unions ! ! ! I am sick and tired of BEGGING OUR GOVERNMENT TO DO THE RIGHT THING ! ! ! The Board of Directors of such an organization would consist of people who are absolutely trustworthy......Bill Moyers-types!!! (Wendell Potter, the ex-CEO of Cigna would be terrific....he knows ALL the things to avoid !) We would all share the cost and have full coverage for basic healthcare.
Let's start a dialogue on this....IT IS POSSIBLE ! ! ! !
We don't need to keep wasting our time wrestling with the LUNATIC FRINGE IN BOTH PARTIES WHO HAVE SOLD THEIR SOULS AND CARE NOTHING ABOUT THE NEEDS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ! ! !
Sign me up!
Thank you Congressman Weiner for doing something clever and educational. We need a lot more fight from Democrats and a lot less limp capitulation on issues.
Joe
THIS IS A TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN AND WOMEN, DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR NEIGHBORS UNABLE TO OBTAIN AND RETAIN HEALTH CARE.
Our health care system eats up roughly 16 percent of our GDP, and yet America's standing when it comes to over-all child well being is no better than 20th in the world. In human terms, newspapers and TV reports are filled with documented cases of lives destroyed or lost due to the hit-or-miss nature of the existing health care system.
We do not want you and others just to tinker around the edges of reform, allowing the insurance companies and drug companies to continue making profits off our health. We want a non-profit public policy for all like Medicare, Tricare and other best-run government backed health care programs to choose from. End our suffering and abuse so we can be productive citizens. We are depending on you.
The Senate is still in session and doing the dirty work for the Medical Industrial Complex.

The Medical Industrial Complex doesn't take vacations in August. Keep up the good fight.
SEMPER FI!
There is not the faintest possibility any genuine healthcare reform will be enacted in the United States -- not now, not ever -- and events like this charade of pseudo-defiance by a powerless group of Congressional Democrats merely serve the ruling class by distracting those of us in the working class from the painful but politically essential work of acknowledging our own absolute powerlessness.
Indeed, were these Congressional Democrats sincere, they would be disseminating information such as that contained in the infinitely damning report published on this site Friday (and thus unfortunately obscured by the weekend’s distractions): “Top Ten Ways To Tell Your President & His Party Aren't Fighting For Health Care For Everybody”: http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/07/31#comment-1264552
The methodical betrayal exposed by “Your President & His Party” is further confirmed by the lead story in Sunday morning's "Washington Post" (2 August 2009), another major disclosure unfortunately minimized by weekend lassitude: “Obama Trims Sails On Health Reform...Seeks to Rally Support by Promising Less": http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/01/AR2009080102403.html?hpid=topnews
All of which adds up -- whether we are honest enough to admit it or not -- to the permanent end of any rational prospect for "change we can believe in."
It is also -- and I say this not with any sense of triumph but rather with infinite bitterness -- absolute proof of the correctness of my pre-election prediction: that Obama would change nothing save perhaps our awareness of how powerless we truly are.
The hideous truth is that the United States has been reduced a one-party despotism in which Democrats and Republicans are nothing more than separate cliques within a monolithic plutocracy.
Thus government and governance at all levels no longer serve any purpose save the perpetuation of capitalism by any means imaginable -- absolute power for the ruling class, total subjugation for all the rest of us.
And that is precisely the reason there will be no meaningful healthcare reform now or ever.
Instead what will emerge from Congress is a pseudo-reform, another Big Lie program.
True, whatever measure is approved will probably appear to impose some restrictions on the Sultans of Sickness -- the prescription drug lords, insurance barons and other vampire capitalists who already profit so obscenely from our misfortunes.
But -- specifically through the vehicle of compulsory insurance (which will eternally reduce us to the financial slaves of those same plutocrats) -- the legislation will not just radically increase their profits but guarantee them forever.
And can anyone of reasonable intelligence doubt any longer that this is precisely what the ruling class intended from the very beginning?
As I said before: the perpetuation of capitalism -- absolute power for the ruling class, total subjugation for all the rest of us. By any means possible: including the Big Lie of the Obama Presidency to bolster the even bigger Big Lie of bipartisan democracy.
Liberalbias
You are right on!
Until we have level playing fields for all elections, meaning NO CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS (bribes), all candidates with equal air time, TV time, print ads, etc., we will be controlled by those with the $$ they have appropriated for themselves in this so-called economic rescue scam and the inflated charges for meds, etc., etc.
Bottom line is we are the voters. The problem is, we allow ourselves to be blindsided by the lies of the media, all owned by the same gang. We could vote them out of office if we would ORGANIZE and inform ourselves.
How bad does it have to get? The gov't is worried, hence the posse comitatus, military local police buildup.
Credit Unions may be the way to start, maybe as Health Unions. Many MD's would support this.
its pretty hard to imagine how these pols go to bed at night and put their heads on a pillow and go to sleep knowing that people
are dying because of their cowardice! if you think about this
in moral terms this is the equivilent of genocide of the
american people! i hope they choke on the money!
The longer I watch this greenhorn, the more I feel vindicated for having voted for Hillary. After all, she WON the popular vote, when she ran against Obama for the nomination of her party.
Who put the "lunatic fringe" in both parties? We did, of course. The same people that put Obama in office, and with the same insight as was displayed when he was put in office by the people in Illinois. And now, grossly humiliated at the vast chasm between his preposterous promises and self glorification, and evidence of the betrayal and mediocrity we face from him today, most of the dems that voted for him are busy making excuses and apologies for his folly and especially his blind hawkishness. Once more, dems have been suckered by their own stubborness and the childish faith they put in political poseurs.
Obama had to find a VP that would not overshadow him, and, in the process managed to expose his VP choice, once and for all, for the pedant and half wit he has been all along, Obama chose Biden. Perfect.
Obama's health care an insurance shell game. Magician Obama moves the health care shells and the audience is unable to determine that Obama has made the people pay for health care insurance, which d/n give give health care.
People want Health care Not Obama Shell Game Health Care Insurance. Health care is a government obligation and if government meets its obligation, people would need no health care insurance. Like the single pay federal reserve, single pay health care insurance will make quad-umteem billions from payments extracted by government mandate directly from pockets of Americans. (americans s/n pay, government should pay).
Every single American is entitled to the very best health care science can package for Doctors to Deliver to patients. Health care not health insurance.
A robust public health care option-- yeah, let's have one like the phony Blue Dawgs and the GOP fanatical opponents of "socialized medicine" help themselves to at our expense! I'll go for that, unless these same congresscirtters don't mind being called out on their phoniness.
