The Jay Bybee Problem
How did Jay Bybee breeze through an unusually easy confirmation hearing for his appointment to the Federal Appeals Court in February 2003? Not a single Democrat questioned Bybee at the session, and the brief proceedings soon became a love-fest between Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and Jay Bybee. "I've seen a lot of people around here, and I don't know of anybody who has any more ability than you have," states Sen. Hatch in a typical exchange featured in this report.
Just six months prior to the hearing, Jay Bybee had signed legal memos providing cover for CIA agents torturing detainees -- yet Congress voted him to a lifetime on the federal bench. How did this happen? And what will become of Judge Bybee now?

Show AllBecause Orrin Hatch supported him is all the proof we need that he is a criminal. Hatch belongs in prison too.
It is another nail in the previous administrations Coffin. He Should Be Impeached for his part in the conspiracy to commit torture on behalf of the american people.
This is news? Name once when the Dems stood up to these cowboys. Not one of the Supreme Court Nazis even received a filibuster from the Senate Dems.
Bye Bye, Jay Bybee. The plank is out. Prepare to walk it. Whatever you get, you richly deserve it. After they kick your criminal backside off the court, Orrin Hatch will give you one of his cd's of patriotic songs, containing such titles as: "I Carry a Torture for You, Baby", "Waterboardgate" and "Killing Floor". Maybe you can get a job selling insurance, or open your own fly-by-night online law school called the Headslam School of Law.
Umm, nothing is going to happen to Bybee. The Democrats are so afraid that the Rethugs won't wuvv their judicial nominees that they won't dare attack any of the Rethug judges.
Jesus said "Woe to you lawyers". The denunciation was prophetic for all time. For money they will say any damn thing you want to hear.
where were all the lawyer? Maybe at the bar?
Jay Bybee is a monster. Orrin Hatch has absolutely no integrity. Both hold tremendous positions of power in the US. What does that say about our country?
Orrin would have approved of mountain meadows.
It is high time that Senators and Congressmen have their terms in office limited too! This certainly would cut down corruption and make government more responsive to those who elected them.
Hatch should be the one to hand Bybee his pink slip. And then HE can fall one his sword, too.
It happened because the Democrats never really have opposed the use of government torture and in fact helped Bush and Cheney get away with it. Their objections are more like that it has given the US government bad publicity so they want to make the overt use more covert once again, and that's all, Folks.
'How can this happen'---?
This is America-----this has been happening all along.
Just the names change.
There are no noteworthy differences between the Republicans and Democrats.
Good Luck America, you really need it.
There is nothing wrong with the US that death won't cure. I say we would all be better off with no government at all.
My government promises to protect me from my neighbors. Not one of my neighbors has ever stolen money from me to kill innocent people with whom I have no quarrel.
My neighbors are already afraid of me, as I am of them. Who knows who the NSA or the FBI or the CIA has contacted to learn about my private affairs which are supposed to be protected from government intrusion?
"Just six months prior to the hearing, Jay Bybee had signed legal memos providing cover for CIA agents torturing detainees -- yet Congress voted him to a lifetime on the federal bench."
The mistake is in the word "yet". The proper word is "therefore".
The purpose of the courts is always to protect the masters from the subjects, not the other way around.
Bybee looks like the perfect little Hitler Youth...
