No Child Left Inside

There's a quiet revolution happening in Wichita, a war in which the weapons are simple -- grass, dirt, water, sky -- but the goal is monumental: Saving childhood. A movement to reconnect children with nature -- some call it "No Child Left Inside" -- is gaining momentum in Kansas, with several bold new projects or proposals:

• A Rainbows United facility at K-96 and Oliver soon will unveil its 10-acre outdoor classroom and nature area designed to get kids back to nature.

Americans United Lauds Supreme Court's Refusal to Hear NJ Football Prayer Case

Supreme Court Action Protects Religious Neutrality of Public Schools, Says AU's Lynn

WASHINGTON - March 2 - The U.S. Supreme Court made the right call today in refusing to hear a case from New Jersey dealing with a high school football coach who wants to pray with students, says Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Without comment, the justices announced that they will not hear an appeal of Borden v. School District of the Township of East Brunswick, a challenge brought by high school football coach Marcus Borden. The high court's decision leaves in place a lower court order barring Borden from involvement in his students' religious activities.

Number of Homeless Students Rising in Dallas-Area Districts

Dallas-area school districts are seeing more homeless children this year compared with last year, a nationwide trend spawned by families losing their jobs, their houses - and struggling just to pay bills.

Kids for Cash

A number of bad ideas and virulent trends in American life converge, it seems to me, in the unfolding scandal in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., known as "kids for cash."

The blurring of the line that separates profit from state, especially since the Reagan era, has had a far more devastating effect on American values - indeed, on the very notion that anything besides a good financial buzz even has value - than the blurring of that more famously wobbly line that separates church from state.

Why Gay Students Don't Feel Safe

Imagine being a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender teen who loves singing in the school chorus.

Now imagine that experience being spoiled by a thoughtless, homophobic adult -- the music teacher who ought to be striving for harmony.

"My choir teacher constantly makes gay jokes," a 12th-grade Latino student reported in a new national study. "And he doesn't realize that he makes it so uncomfortable for us because it's choir. There's a large LGBT community in choir, and he sits there and cracks gay jokes all the time."

ACLU Report Reveals Breakdown in Mississippi Alternative Schools

Alternative School System Failing to Prevent Dropouts or Provide Quality Education

JACKSON, Miss. - February 24 - Alternative schools in Mississippi are not adequately helping struggling students to succeed academically, leaving too many of the state's children to drift toward dropout and failure, according to a new American Civil Liberties Union report released today.

The ACLU conserves America's original civic values working in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in the United States by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

No Lunch Left Behind

This new era of government bailouts and widespread concern over wasteful spending offers an opportunity to take a hard look at the National School Lunch Program. Launched in 1946 as a public safety net, it has turned out to be a poor investment. It should be redesigned to make our children healthier.

NYC Must Obey Church-State Rules When Converting Catholic Schools to Charter Schools, Says Americans United

Watchdog Group Advises Mayor, Brooklyn Bishop to Keep Religion out of Potential New Charter Schools

WASHINGTON - February 17 - Americans United for Separation of Church and State today advised New York City officials and Bishop Nicholas A. DiMarzio to abide by constitutional requirements when converting four Catholic schools in Brooklyn to charter schools.

Fourteen Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens are scheduled to close this year. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other city officials are considering leasing some of the buildings and converting the schools into public charter schools.

Education Still The Pathway to Freedom

In recognition of Black History Month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has presented a flattering economic sketch of black people in the United States. In this drawing by the numbers, we are seen as a relatively young and hearty work force -- 17 million black people strong -- poised to weather the difficult economic times ahead.

Nearly two-thirds of us are 45 and younger, according to the bureau. And more than one in four are employed in education and health service fields, where some of the fastest growing occupations are expected to be found through 2016.

Julia Spittel worries today's young people are losing touch with their natural surroundings.

Inspired by the majestic landscape of the Yukon Territory during a trip there six years ago, the Langstaff Secondary School visual arts teacher decided to introduce environmental themes into her teaching to get students closer to nature.
