Activists from
the human rights and the environmental communities will gather for
the 2nd Human Rights Action Camp, a unique and dynamic five-day course
of "direct action" workshops and trainings beginning Friday, May 28.
The Action Camp
provides citizen activists with action-oriented skills and strategies
to accomplish constructive and non-violent social change in their
communities and nationwide. Grassroots and professional activists
from leading international and domestic human rights and environmental
organizations will provide Action Camp participants with critical
skills and strategies that will increase the effectiveness of advocacy
and build stronger cooperation among these communities.
The Human Rights
Action Camp will be held from May 28-June 2 at Glen Ora Farm in Middleburg,
Va. Activists will live and work together in a tent city, taking part
in workshops on Human Rights and Environmental Law, Strategic Campaigning
and Demonstrations, Marches and Low-Tech Blockades. Training session
include nonviolence, urban climbing, banner construction and hanging
techniques, Internet activism, and political theater. International
participants are expected from Kenya, Nicaragua, Hungary, Mexico,
China, Bangladesh and Nigeria. The Action Camp is sponsored by the
Ruckus Society, Friends of the Earth and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial
Center for Human Rights.
