| WASHINGTON
- March 22 - Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) and Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN), other members of Congress, leaders from the nation's
veterans service organizations and AFGE union leadership will hold a news conference Wednesday at 9:15 am at the VFW Washington
Headquarters to announce their push for increasing the veterans' health care budget, and the
Johnson-Wellstone amendment to the budget resolution to add $2 billion in FY 2000 above the level contained in
the budget resolution. Adoption of this amendment would result in a $3 billion increase for
veteran's health care from last year. The Administration recommended an FY 2000 appropriation of $17.036 billion
for veterans health care, the same amount as provided this year and the fourth consecutive budget in which VA health care funding has been
flat-lined. Many of the nation's veterans service organizations have endorsed the efforts to increase veterans health care by supporting
the "Johnson Amendment" that was offered during the Budget Committee's mark up of the budget resolution last week.
