| WASHINGTON
- March 22 - News Advisory:
U.S. Rep. Tony P. Hall (D-Ohio), will release the results of his
second
nationwide survey of food banks on Wednesday and introduce the Congressional
Hunger Center's "Mickey Leland Hunger Fellows," who have spent the
past six months working in food banks around the nation.
Hall's 1998 survey found that a growing number of Americans are
turning
to food banks for help. The 1999 survey finds that trend is continuing --
and that the staple foods that food banks have counted on in the past now
provide them with a precarious foundation. The 1999 survey also finds that
despite the strong U.S. economy, lines at soup kitchens and other charities
continue to lengthen, and more of those waiting are working people and
senior citizens.
