UCS Press Luncheon to Mark Three Mile Island Anniversary
 
WASHINGTON - March 11 - News Advisory:

On March 28, 1979, a series of equipment problems and worker errors turned a routine incident at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 plant outside Harrisburg, Pa., into the worst nuclear power accident in U.S. history. As the 20th anniversary of this watershed event nears, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) will hold a press luncheon to revisit the early days of the accident, assess lessons learned and not learned, and forecast the future of the nuclear power industry. UCS will also release a new study, "Three Mile Island's Puzzling Legacy."

Who:
-- Susan Q. Stranahan, staff writer, Philadelphia Inquirer. Stranahan wrote the major stories on the TMI accident that led to the Inquirer receiving the Pulitzer Prize.
-- Peter Bradford, commissioner, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 1977 to 1982. Bradford also chaired the New York State Public Service Commission from 1987 to 1995.
-- David Lochbaum, nuclear safety engineer, Union of Concerned Scientists. Lochbaum worked for 17 years in the nuclear power industry before joining UCS in 1996.
-- Moderator: Douglas Robinson, city and state editor, Philadelphia Inquirer, 1978 to 1996. Now retired, Robinson was a New York Times reporter and editor from 1955 to 1977.
