- June 3 - On Saturday, June 5, the National March on the Pentagon will demand
No Bombing of Yugoslavia, U.S./NATO Hands off Yugoslavia, and No occupation of
Yugoslavia. Thousands will be marching from the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial
in Washington DC to the steps of the Pentagon.
"The National March
on the Pentagon will continue. Though a settlement may be in place--which may
still collapse--we will gather in Washington DC to protest the U.S./NATO occupation
of Yugoslavia that has been the real U.S. objective in this war. The Rambouillet
Accords in February were designed to include terms no sovereign nation could accept.
Yugoslavia has heroically resisted 72 days of criminal bombardment that targeted
residential areas, schools, hospitals, electrical grids, factories, refugee convoys,
bridges, and other civilian infrastructure. Thousands of civilians have been killed.
These are war crimes perpetrated by the U.S. and NATO, and we will continue to
expose and protest them. This has never been a war. It has been a one-sided destruction,"
said Sara Flounders, a co-director of the International Action Center.
"What the U.S. is still
trying to impose through continued bombing is a U.S./NATO occupation. The anti-war
movement must continue to demand a complete withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces
from the Balkans. What the U.S. seeks to do is further break apart Yugoslavia,
to occupy the country with foreign troops to pave the way for foreign capital.
This doesn’t set the stage for peace. Instead, it whets the appetite for
a U.S. rampage for domination of Europe, Russia and Asia.
"We must remember what
happened eight years ago in Iraq. After the cease-fire, as the Iraqi army was
retreating from Kuwait City, the U.S. and others bombed a 60 mile stretch of highway,
killing tens of thousands. And since then, the U.S. has led the UN in almost nine
years of genocidal sanctions that have killed over 1.7 million people, mostly
children and the elderly (according to UN agencies). The U.S. and British bombing
of Iraq continues to this day.
"The anti-war movement
in the U.S. and around the world must continue to protest U.S. militarism in all
of its forms--whether it be an out-and-out bombing campaign, military occupation,
or sanctions. On Saturday, June 5, thousands will march to demand U.S./NATO Hands
off Yugoslavia. We demand that the billions of dollars that are used to terrorize
people in Yugoslavia and Iraq be used instead for jobs, education, and healthcare,"
Flounders continued.
