| New Radio Ad Urges Senate to End Trial; In Vermont, Rhode Island, Maine, Michigan, Washington State and Washington D.C. | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- January 21 - A radio aid airing in five states and the District of Columbia from now
through Monday urges the U.S. Senate to honor the will of the people and vote to
halt the impeachment trial.
The ad is timed to lead up to the vote on the motion for dismissal that is expected to come early next week. It reminds listeners that the Senate will have the opportunity next week to cast a single vote to end the trial and return Congress to doing the people's business. The ad urging listeners to contact their Senators is airing in Burlington, Vermont; Providence, Rhode Island; Portland, Maine; Detroit, Michigan; Seattle, Washington and Washington, DC. "The country does not want this ordeal dragged out further and that makes next week's vote a real test of character for the Senate," said PFAW President Carole Shields. "The Senate has to choose between the people and more ugly partisan politics." The ad taps into the frustration the people have expressed for months now over a process that ties up the government in a partisan witch hunt and ignores the real business of the people. It comes on the heels of the President's State of the Union address, which was the focal point for dozens of gatherings all over the country. The meetings brought together thousands of Americans to hear prominent scholars and leaders speak out against impeachment all across the country and to hear the President's address. Participants in the meetings signed pledge cards vowing to carry on the fight for a government that hears and heeds the people's will. Overnight polls taken in the wake of the address show strengthened resolve among Americans to oppose the partisan impeachment that has diverted their government and mired the country in scandal. People For the American Way has received a tremendous outpouring of public approval for its ads and other organizing efforts to oppose impeachment. Since its first ad appeared urging Congress "Let's Move On," hundreds of thousands of Americans have responded to the opportunities People For has provided to deliver their message to Congress via toll-free calls, telegrams, rallies, and the Internet. Shields warned that the GOP leadership is being led by the Religious Right down a path that is leading the Party farther and farther away from the majority of the people. "The November elections should have been a wake-up call, but the Republican leaders are once again being lulled into a dangerous sleep by the Right." Shields predicted that political cynics who say the public will forget their anger and that the GOP leadership will not pay a price for pursuing their witch hunt against the President will be proven wrong. "On November 7, 2000, Americans will remember," Shields said. ###
