| Wellstone and Hutchinson to Join with Human Rights Coalition at Press Conference to Call for U.S. Condemnation of China's Human Rights Record at U.N. Geneva Conference | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- February 19 -
Senator Paul Wellstone and Senator Tim Hutchinson
will join prominent Chinese exiles, and leaders from the international
human rights community, in support of Senate Resolution 45 calling on
the Administration to criticize China's human rights practices at the
upcoming U.N. Human Rights Commission meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
When President Clinton formally delinked trade and human rights in 1994, he pledged that the US would "step up its efforts, in cooperation with other states, to insist that the United Nations Human Rights Commission pass a resolution dealing with the serious human rights abuses in China." While he has claimed an intention at least to speak out on human rights, the substance of US-China relations -- trade, military contacts, high level summits-- goes forward while Chinese leaders continue to crack down on every last dissident in a country of over one billion people. The press conference occurs on the same day that the State Department will release its annual Human Rights Report on China. The Report is expected to contain harsh words for the Chinese government. In March, Secretary Madeleine Albright will travel to China to meet with Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji. The U.N. Commission on Human Rights will hold its annual meeting in Geneva, Switzerland in late March.WHAT: Press Conference in Support of: The Hutchinson/Wellstone China Human Rights Resolution WHEN: Friday, February 26th 10:00 am WHERE: Room SC-6 in the Capitol WHO: Senator Paul D.
