| Greenpeace Statement on Coos Bay, Oregon Oil Spill | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- February 11 - On Wednesday, the Coast Guard decided to burn the New
Carissa, a ship that ran
aground six days ago off the coast of Oregon and which is carrying approximately
400,000 gallons of oil. In the midst of this crisis is the question of whether
it would be better to torch the vessel and its oil while still at sea, or allow
the oil to wash up onto the beaches. Greenpeace believes this is a question with
no correct answer. Indeed, it is a terrible choice-and a choice which
communities should not have to face.
What is clear is that from oil spills to global warming, the price of oil is a lot higher than what we pay at the pump. The only way to avert either of these environmental catastrophes is to reduce our dependence upon oil. Aggressive energy and fuel efficiency measures coupled with a more rapid introduction of existing solar and renewable power technologies are truly the only answer to these vexing environmental problems. Oil spills are a very visible reminder that throughout its life cycle, oil can damage our air and our water and even cause extreme weather events due to global warming. Greenpeace hopes that the community will come through this immediate crisis with a minimum of ecological and economic consequences. In any case, this incident should serve as one more reason to make the 21st century the solar century. ### |
