| Common Cause Letter to Senate on Trial Deliberations | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- February 8 - Common Cause today released the following letter to all United States
Senators, urging them to conduct their final trial deliberations in open session rather than behind closed doors:
February 8, 1999 Dear Senator: Three weeks ago, Common Cause sent you a letter urging your support for a motion to be offered by Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Paul Wellstone (D-MN) to open to public scrutiny the deliberations of the Senate during the impeachment trial of President Clinton. As the Senate moves towards final deliberations on conviction this week, a group of Senators is expected to renew this motion for a vote tomorrow. We strongly reiterate our support for opening final deliberations to public view. As we said in our original letter, there is no more serious and important debate undertaken by the Senate than the question of whether to remove a sitting President from office. For the decision of the Senate to command the respect of the public, the work of the Senate should be conducted in public. The Senate should act this week in its best tradition of open and thoughtful debate. We urge you to join with your colleagues and vote to hold the impeachment deliberations in open session. We enclose a copy of our January 20 letter which sets forth our position in greater detail. Sincerely, Ann McBride President -0- |
