| CBPP Hosts Press Conference on 'Social Security and People of Color' | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- September 30 - Press Conference: "Social Security and People of Color: A Critical Future" Monday, Oct. 5, 9:30 a.m. National Press Club, First Amendment Room Speakers: -- Julian Bond, chairman, Board of Directors, NAACP -- Raul Yzaguirre, president, National Council of La Raza -- Robert Greenstein, executive director, CBPP -- Kilolo Kijakazi, senior policy analyst, CBPP ------ The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) will host a press conference on Monday, Oct. 5, at 9:30 a.m., in the First Amendment Room of the National Press Club in Washington. The Center and leaders from civil rights organizations will address issues and controversies emerging for African Americans and Hispanic Americans in the national debate over reforming Social Security. At the press conference, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities will release a new report critiquing earlier Heritage Foundation studies that claim to show African Americans and Hispanic Americans receive poor rates of return from Social Security and would fare better under a system of private retirement accounts. The Center's analysis finds the Heritage studies to be replete with errors and concludes that Heritage's claims that African-American and Hispanic-American communities would be big winners under the Social Security privatization do not withstand scrutiny. The civil rights leaders -- including Julian Bond and Raul Yzaguirre -- will address the importance of the debate over changes in Social Security to African Americans and Hispanic Americans and the importance of minority workers to the future of the Social Security system. They will discuss emerging priorities for these organizations in the shaping of a fair and fiscally sound Social Security program. For more information on Monday's press conference, call Michelle Bazie or Herbert Schaffner at 202-408-1080. Copies of the Center's report will be available at the press briefing, or after 11 a.m. through www.cbpp.org and the Center's offices. ------ The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a nonpartisan research organization and policy institute that conducts research and analysis on a range of government policies and programs, with an emphasis on those affecting low- and middle-income people. It is supported primarily by foundation grants. ### |
