United Steelworkers of America to Hold Rally in Front of U.S. Capitol
WASHINGTON - September 22 - News Advisory:

More than 1,400 members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) will be arriving on buses and car caravans Thursday, Sept. 24, for a rally at 10 a.m. on the U.S. Capitol's West Front, to stop the congressional leadership's promised vote for "Fast Track" authority to expand the nation's free trade policies.

Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.), U.S. Rep. Jack Quinn (R-N.Y.) and other congressional leaders and U.S. Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.) will address the rally with AFL-CIO President John Sweeney.

"American workers oppose fast track because it is a flawed process that exports good-paying manufacturing jobs," declared USWA President Becker. "Approval of fast track will expand the failed policies of NAFTA and force all workers into a race to the bottom," he adds.

The USWA's Rapid Response Network of local union activists from across the country have mailed 155,000 handwritten letters to their congressional representatives opposing fast track. The campaign began in early August. Fast track is an exposed nerve ending for thousands of Steelworkers' families and industrial workers who have lost jobs to NAFTA.

------
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES AND SOUND BITES: The stop "Fast Track" rally on the U.S. Capitol's West Front will feature banners and placards with 30 busloads of Steelworkers offloading at the U.S. Capitol's West Front starting at 9:30 a.m. A press riser and mult-box will be provided.
