PTA, School Boards Association to Campaign Against School Vouchers
WASHINGTON - September 14 - The National PTA and the National School Boards Association (NSBA) have come together in an effort to push Congress to support public schools and vote no on vouchers. The groups have launched the Protect America's Public Schools campaign, a series of print ads, an action kit, toll-free number, and a website that helps citizens contact their members of Congress to encourage them to support public education not private school vouchers.

"NSBA and National PTA initiated the Protect America's Public Schools campaign to send a pro-public education message to Congress this fall," said National PTA President Lois Jean White. "Our organizations believe that public education is vital to America's well-being, and advocates for effective schools that provide excellent educational opportunities that leave no children behind."

The heart of the campaign is three print advertisements that explain why vouchers are bad for the nation's children. The ads also carry a toll-free number for an action kit that will include background materials on vouchers, information on how to contact members of Congress, and ways to involve other community members in the campaign. The ads are scheduled to appear in The Washington Post and Roll Call.

"Our nation's public school children need a fair chance. This campaign sends a strong message to Congress that vouchers don't solve the problem," said Anne Bryant, NSBA executive director. "Real improvement and increased student achievement will occur when Congress starts focusing on public school needs rather than distractions like vouchers that will impact only a small number of students."

The campaign's toll-free number is 877-BE4KIDS. The Protect America's Public Schools website may be accessed from the National PTA's or the NSBA's websites at, www.pta.org/be4kids  or www.nsba.org/be4kids .
