| Toxic Schools: Bill Addresses Schools Close To Pollution Sites | ||||
| LOS
ANGELES - September 8 - Schools located near polluters is the subject of a
news conference by parents and community leaders tomorrow at Suva Elementary School in
Bell Gardens. The participants will be pressing Governor Wilson to sign AB 278,
which would establish science-based standards that protect children from dangerous
chemicals near schools. Joining the groups in urging Governor Wilson to sign the bill is Sharon Davis on behalf of Lt. Governor Gray Davis. Located directly next to a chrome-plating factory that emits high levels of air pollution, Suva Elementary school is a well-known example of a school struggling to protect its children despite holes in California's public health laws. A growing body of science shows that children are much more vulnerable than adults to chemical exposure, yet most health standards for pollution are set at levels that protect just adults. AB 278, the Children's Environmental Health Protection Act is authored by area Assemblywoman Martha Escutia. Health, environmental and community organizations at the event include Mothers of East Los Angeles -- Santa Isabel, Communities for a Better Environment, Physicians for Social Responsibility and the California League of Conservation Voters. Governor Gray Davis Assemblywoman Martha Escutia, 50th District David Allgood, California League of Conservation Voters Dr. Felix Aguilar, Physicians for Social Responsibility Children and parents of Suva Elementary WHAT: Parents, physicians, community groups and political leaders hold a news conference at a school exposed to pollution to call upon Governor Wilson to sign AB 278, the Children's Environmental Health Protection Act.
