| WASHINGTON
- September 8 - The following was released today by Handgun Control Inc.: Advocates for the gun lobby are trying to pull a fast one on the American people. H.R. 218 has been placed on the House suspension calendar and may be brought to the House floor soon. In its original form, H.R. 218 would have permitted active duty law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons in any state and would have allowed retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons in any state if they meet safety criteria. Thanks to the gun lobby, H.R. 218 was amended in the House Judiciary Committe to include an amendment that allows any private citizen with a carry concealed weapons license to pack heat in most other states across the nation. The "Have Gun, Will Travel" amendment, introduced by Rep. Bill McCollum (R-Fla.), is not only an assault on states' rights, but also jeopardizes the safety of American citizens and law enforcement. By placing it on the suspension calendar, the bill's supporters are pretending that the amended H.R. 218 is "non-controversial." This reckless legislation will impact all states that allow the carrying of concealed handguns, especially those which attract large numbers of out-of-state tourists. ------ WHO: HCI Chair Sarah Brady; Rep.
