| Statement Of Kate Michelman: The Murder of Dr. Barnett Slepian, Abortion Provider | ||||
| WASHINGTON -
October 24 - NARAL President Kate Michelman today expressed shock and grief at the murder
of Dr. Barnett Slepian, an abortion provider in Buffalo, New York. "NARAL is shocked and saddened by the death of Dr. Slepian. For more than a decade, he had bravely stood up to the threats of anti-choice terrorists, never wavering in his commitment to his patients and to women's reproductive health. NARAL salutes Dr. Slepian's courage and that of reproductive health care workers across the nation. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. "The cold-blooded assassination of Dr. Slepian is a shocking example of just how far some opponents of abortion and reproductive rights will go to deny women their constitutional right to choose. Coming on the heels of the gruesome murder of Matthew Shepherd in Wyoming, it is also a telling reminder of the increasing climate of intolerance and hatred we now see in America. "Opposition to abortion is not a license to commit murder. Such heinous acts run counter to the principles on which this country was founded and are unacceptable in a pluralistic democracy. This despicable act should serve as a wake-up call to all pro-choice Americans who believe that their right to choose is safe Whether it comes from those who commit violence to stop women from having abortions or those who craft legislation to make abortions more difficult to obtain, the freedom to choose is under serious assault. ### |
