| Clean Air Trust Hails Canadian Government for Reduction of Sulphur in Gasoline | ||||
| WASHINGTON -
October 23 - The nonprofit Clean Air Trust today hailed the decision by the Canadian
government to sharply reduce the sulfur content of gasoline. Despite fierce lobbying by the oil industry, Canada's environment minister today announced a proposal to reduce gasoline sulfur levels to that of California gasoline within the next seven years. "This is a tremendous breakthrough that will bring major health benefits in Canada by reducing smog-causing emissions from motor vehicles," said Frank O'Donnell, executive director of the Clean Air Trust. Canadian studies have concluded that lower-sulfur gasoline would prevent many asthma attacks, incidences of bronchitis, and more than 2,000 premature deaths. O'Donnell noted that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is examining a similar plan to phase down sulfur in gasoline sold in the United States. "It would be an international embarrassment -- not to mention irresponsible for public health -- if the United States does less, or does it less quickly," O'Donnell added. He explained that sulfur poisons pollution control systems and renders them less effective at controlling emissions that cause or contribute to smog, soot, toxic air pollution, and regional haze. High levels of sulfur will cause even bigger problems for "low-emission" vehicles, and will impede advanced technology designs that could also reduce emissions linked to global warming.
