Sarah Brady Applauds The Enactment Of Massachusetts' Toughest In The Nation Gun Violence Prevention Bill

WASHINGTON - October 20 - Sarah Brady, Chair of Handgun Control, Inc., released the following statement on tomorrow’s enactment of the Massachusetts Gun Violence Prevention Law:

"Tomorrow, Massachusetts will enact what is arguably the toughest gun violence prevention laws in the country. The key elements focus on the responsibility of gun owners, gun dealers and manufacturers while insuring that offenders of gun laws receive stiff punishment.

"The Commonwealth of Massachusetts will begin enforcing a sensible, common-sense law that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and children and save lives. The people of Massachusetts are sending a message to other states and to Congress that lawmakers can and must act to reduce gun violence. The passage of this legislation was a victory for common sense and for safety. By combining prevention and punishment, this law will save lives.

"Among the key provisions of the new law are: a requirement for the sale of safety locking devices with firearms, a mandate that adults safely store their firearms to prevent child access, a ban on the sale of junk guns, the institution of safety training for purchasers, the establishment of a four-year time limit on FID cards, and enhanced penalties for those who violate firearm law.

"The 105th Congress has spent two years refusing to protect the safety of American citizens. By contrast, Massachusetts has made an enormous leap forward in protecting the citizens of its state. I congratulate everyone who worked to insure the passage of this life-saving legislation."
