Lott: More Than $68 Million For Mississippi In Defense Supplemental Bill

WASHINGTON - October 20 - An early examination of portions of the supplemental appropriations bill that Congress is considering as part of the Omnibus Appropriations bill reveals that Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott has used his key position to serve up a huge plate of Mississippi-bound funding.

Disregarding military cries of a "readiness crisis," Lott has turned the defense supplemental bill into a  happy hunting grounds for more than Mississippi duck hunters.  Another Lott provision in the Omnibus bill extends the duck hunting season in his home state.

A listing of over $68 million in military construction projects heading to Mississippi includes:
  • $27 million - Keesler Air Force Base in Beloxi electrical distribution system
  • $22 million - Keesler Air Force Base storm damage
  • $ 7.1 million - Gulf Port National Guard to replace hanger #69
  • $ 6.2 million - Gulf Port National Guard to replace dormitory
  • $ 2.6 million - Gulf Port National Guard base fire station
  • $ 2.8 million - Gulf Port Naval Construction Center (Seebees) work
  • $ 860,000 - Gulf Port Naval Construction Center consolidated equipment operation track

Council for a Livable World, in a statement released today, urged that just as the Pentagon authorization bill is called the  "Strom Thurmond National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999," the defense supplemental should be renamed "Trent Lott Defense Supplemental Act for Mississippi in 1999."

No doubt, further examination of the bill over the coming days when the text is fully available will reveal many costly add-ons that address down home "political readiness" rather than "military readiness."
