| America's Environment Still In Play As Negotiations On The Budget Bill Continue Through Weekend | ||||
| WASHINGTON -
October 16 - Negotiations on a handful of anti-environmental riders in the Omnibus Budget
bill are still in play. With a final vote on the omnibus bill now expected on Monday
or Tuesday, there is still ample time and opportunity to strip out the remaining
anti-environmental riders. Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club
explains: "We are encouraged by the Clinton Administration's success in removing many of the destructive riders from the Omnibus Budget bill, but the fight is not yet over. There is still far too much environmentally damaging legislation left in this bill. We were very pleased to hear this afternoon that yet another rider has been dropped, the rider allowing a road to be built through some of Alaska's most important wildlife habitat in the Chugach National Forest. We call on President Clinton to redouble his efforts to protect America's environment by stripping out the remaining destructive provisions from the budget bill. "For example, the Quincy Logging Bill would double logging in three National Forests in California, another measure allows oil companies to drill off our coasts without paying a fair return to the American people, there's a damaging that would remove wilderness protection from part of historic Cumberland Island in Georgia, and yet another rider removes Florida's coasts from protective status and opens them to development. These and the other remaining anti-emvironmental riders must be stripped from this bill. "Mr. President, if this is the best deal you can get for the environment, it is not good enough and you should veto the bill. You need to continue to insist that these anti-environmental riders are dropped from the bill and refuse to sign the bill if they remain." ### |
