| Fast to Raise Awareness of Sudan Famine; Bread for the World Members Join in World Food Day Observance | ||||
| SILVER SPRING, MD
- October 16 - Bread for the World members will join people across the country in fasting
and praying on behalf of hungry people in Sudan on World Food Day. There are 2.6 million people in southern Sudan on the verge of starvation, said David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. Unfortunately, the only time Sudan has made it into the nightly news in recent months is to report on U.S. military action. Continuing violence from the 15-year-old civil war, the crippling effects of malnutrition and late rains have kept farmers from their fields. The World Food Program anticipates food shortages to require substantial relief operations well into next year in order to avoid a famine like the one in 1989 that killed nearly 250,000 people in the region. Food is once again being used as a weapon, and once again it is women, children and innocent families who suffer the most -- not the combatants, Beckmann said. Bread for the World members will be making a gift of the funds they would have spent on food during the fast to organizations active in Sudan. # # # Bread for the World is a 44,000 member Christian citizens' movement against hunger. Founded in 1974, Bread for the World's members lobby Congress and the administration to bring about public policy changes that address the root causes of hunger and poverty in the United States and overseas. Bread for the World is a non-partisan organization sponsored by 45 denominations and many theological perspectives. |
