Find Out Who's Financing The Congressional Campaigns: Comprehensive Study of 1998 Political Fund-Raising To Be Released at News Conference

WASHINGTON - October 15 - Who's financing the 1998 congressional campaigns?

The non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics will answer that question at a news conference on Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 10 a.m. in the First Amendment Room at the National Press Club, with release of a comprehensive pre-election report on the 1998 congressional campaigns.

The report will include a list of the top 50 overall contributors, as well as rankings of contributions by industry/interest group, metro
area, and state. PAC, individual, and soft money contributions and the shifting patterns in political giving will be analyzed in detail. The
study also will explore the role of money in the
big legislative battles of the 105th Congress.

In addition to analysis of the overall campaign finance trends, regional reporters covering a particular state's congressional delegation will be provided with individual state profiles, including detailed money maps, industry-by-industry breakdowns of each congressional candidate's fund-raising, and a ranking of the state's biggest contributors.

The report will include charts, graphs, and maps to illustrate the findings.

As the nation's capital turns its attention from budget negotiations and impeachment hearings to political campaigns, this is an opportunity to identify the financial players in this year's congressional elections. Larry Makinson, the Center's executive director, and other Center researchers will present the study and be available for questions.

The Center for Responsive Politics is a non-profit, non-partisan research organization know for its pioneering analyses of campaign financing to federal candidates. The Center's Web site at www.crp.org provides user-friendly access to searchable databases of political contributions to federal campaigns, along with a wide variety of other money-in-politics resources.
