October 15 - News Advisory: On Friday, Oct. 16, Miami/Dade Mayor Alex Penelas, Rep. Rod Blagojevich (D-Ill.) and former Reagan press secretary Jim Brady will address the need for state and national legislation to close loopholes that allow criminals to buy guns at gun shows. Handgun Control, Inc. will release the "Dirty Dozen of Gun Shows," featuring notorious criminals around the nation who purchased their weapons at gun shows -- which in most states do not currently require unlicensed dealers to conduct background checks or observe waiting periods. In two weeks, Florida voters will vote on Revision 12, which would allow Florida counties to close the gun show loophole by giving them the right to require criminal background checks and waiting periods on all gun purchasers at gun shows. Rep. Blagojevich and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) have introduced legislation that would close this loophole on a national basis, and preclude criminals from buying firearms from so-called "private collectors" with no questions asked.
