Betty Friedan Announces Results of Study on News Coverage of Women in Sports
 
WASHINGTON - November 3 - News Advisory:

1998 Symposium, "News coverage of Women in Sports -- Winner or Loser?"

Who:
Women, Men & Media, a research and outreach project examining gender issues in the newspaper, magazine, broadcast and film industries, founded by Betty Friedan and Nancy Woodhull, sponsors the 1998 symposium on Women in Sports. WMM Executive Director Betty Friedan (author, "The Feminine Mystique") opens roundtable discussion; broadcast journalist and author Marlene Sanders serves as moderator.

Why:
To present the results of a study that considered the quality of news coverage of women's athletics from the viewpoint of athletes, coaches, agents and other representatives of women in sport. Roundtable participants include scholars, writers,journalists, administrators interested or involved in media, sports, education, and advocacy.

The symposium will be followed by a luncheon featuring Mariah Burton Nelson, who played basketball at Stanford (one rebound record remains unbroken) and professionally in Europe and the USA. Nelson is the author of several books, including "The Stronger Women Get, The More Men Love Football: Sexism and the American Culture of Sports," (Avon, 1995) and "Embracing Victory:Life Lessons in Competition and Compassion" (William Morrow, 1998).
