UFCW
to Convene in Chicago July 27-31
|

|
WASHINGTON
- June 23 -- One of North America's largest worker organizations, the 1.4
million-member United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), will convene
in Chicago from July 27-July 31, at Festival Hall on Navy Pier.
The general sessions of the UFCW Fourth Regular Convention are open to credentialed
members of the press. Inquiries concerning the convention should be directed to Greg
Denier at 202-446-1591or gdenier@ufcw.org. All members of the press must report to the
Convention Press Room to register beginning July 27.
Press briefings are tentatively scheduled on July 28 with Vice President Al Gore, on July
29 with poultry workers and supporters, and on July 30 to outline a call for regulatory
action in more than 20 states to stop the deceptive trade practices of a major retailer.
Featured speakers at the convention are tentatively scheduled to include: U.S. Rep. Jesse
L. Jackson Jr. (July 27), U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (July 27), Linda Chavez-Thompson (July
27), John Sweeney (July 28), Vice President Al Gore (July 28), Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.
(July 28), U.S. Rep. Richard Gephardt (July 30), Jim Hightower (July 30), U.S. Sen. Edward
Kennedy (July 31).
The convention will elect International Union officers (July 28) and consider proposed
changes to the International Union's Constitution.
