Conservationists
to Unveil 1998 'Dirty Dozen' Targets
|

|
WASHINGTON
- June 22 - News Advisory:
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund will kick off its 1998 election season
by announcing the first six targets of its "Dirty Dozen" campaigns on Tuesday,
June 23, at 10 a.m. The "Dirty Dozen" targets are among the most vulnerable
anti-environment candidates running for Congress and are pegged for defeat through
LCV Action Fund's independent voter information campaigns.
LCV Action Fund debuted the "Dirty Dozen" campaigns in 1996, successfully
providing the margin of difference to defeat seven of its 12 anti-environment targets. The
"Dirty Dozen" helped defeat such candidates as former Sen. Larry Pressler of
South Dakota, the only incumbent senator to lose his seat in 1996.
Deb Callahan, LCV president, and Mike Hayden, LCV board chairman and former Republican
governor of Kansas, will announce the first set of Democratic and Republican "Dirty
Dozen" targets and provide insight into the political power of the environment as an
issue in the 1998 elections. "Dirty Dozen" campaign consultants also will be
available to answer journalists' questions.
