ACLU
Responds to Family Research Council Attack on James C. Hormel's Giving to the ACLU

NEW YORK -- June 19 - The American Civil Liberties Union today
responded to a report by the Family Research Council attacking James C. Hormel, President
Clinton's nominee for the
post of Ambassador to Luxembourg.
The report, "James Hormel: Mythical Man," charges that Hormel is anti-Christian
and anti-religious and that his philanthropic giving -- including a $600,000 gift to the
ACLU -- is directed toward "advancing the homosexual agenda." Hormel's
nomination has been opposed by religious and conservative groups because he is openly gay.
In a letter to Family Research Council president Gary Bauer, ACLU Executive Director Ira
Glasser responded: "No objective examination of Mr. Hormel's long record could
truthfully conclude that his set of goals are either narrow or sectarian. Indeed, that
description better describes your agenda than his."
Contrary to the council's report, Glasser noted that Hormel's $600,000 pledge to the
ACLU's Trust for the Bill of Rights endowment "goes to an unrestricted fund, which
supports neither the Lesbian and Gay Rights nor our Reproductive Freedom Projects, but
instead supports all the basic rights work we do, including our work for freedom of
expression and freedom of religion."
"You should be ashamed of yourself," Glasser wrote, "because you know very
well that Mr. Hormel's contributions to the ACLU support neither of your claims."
